I. Reading Comprehension. Read the selection and answer the questions that follow.

WONDERS OF THE SEA

1. How lovely is the sea in summer! It is crystal clear and its water is so still. You can see the wonders of the
sea as the sun shines on the clear water. Red, orange, purple, blue-green, and goldfish are a sight to behold.
They swim back and forth among the rocks and corals.

2. Deep, deep in the oceans are whales, seals, and dolphins. Like the fish they have streamlined bodies and
flashing fins. But these creatures are all mammals. They breathe air into their lungs like the land mammals.
Whales are so large that they each weigh about one thousand kilograms. What a lot of oil the whale give! From
whales we get substances that we make into soap, candles, chicken feed, fertilizers, and even perfume.

3. Have you seen starfish, cuttlefish, sea horses, jellyfish, and sea urchins? They are not fish, for they have no
backbones. True fish have strong spines that give support and strength to their bodies. Tuna, mackerel,
bangus, lapu-lapu, catfish, and swordfish are examples of true fish.

4. All fish eat heartily, but the sharks are the fiercest eaters of all fish. They have rows of sharp teeth. Their
bodies are covered with pointed scales. The worlds largest fish is the twenty-meter-long whale shark. It feeds
on the rich underwater pasture of tiny floating plants and animals. Tiger sharks have a keen sense of smell.
They are also known as swimming noses.

5. Do you know how many kinds of fish are found in the seas? As many as twenty-five thousand species have
been identified. The bony fishes multiply fast. Their colors vary widely from the fantastic rainbow colors of
tropical fish to the dark shades on the skins of fish from cooler places. Most of the beautiful fishes in aquariums
are tropical fishes.

6. Did you know that the fish can see, hear, smell, taste, and touch as we do? In many cases they can do
these even better than humans can. Some fish can locate and capture insects quickly and accurately above
the surface of the water. This means that they have sharp eyes. They use their nostrils only for smelling but not
for breathing. Fish can live down in the ocean more than six hundred meters deep.

7. Sea creatures can protect themselves against other animals. The swordfish has a long, pointed sword at the
tip of its nose for attack and defense. Squids and octopuses throw out black ink to hide from their enemies.
Sea urchins are thorny. Bites from the sting ray and jellyfish are very painful. The electric eel shoots out an
electric charge when chased by larger fish. Most fish change their color to suit their surroundings. In this way
they can easily hide from their foes and live longer lives.

8. Other wonders of the sea include oysters which produce valuable pearls. A necklace of pearls costs
thousand of pesos. It takes years for an oyster to produce a big and beautiful pearl. When a grain of sand
enters its shell, the oyster starts producing a sticky substance to cover it so that the sand will not irritate its
delicate flesh. Day in and day out the oyster secretes the sticky substance to avoid getting hurt by the sharp
sand. In so doing, the oyster produces a shiny, white, or pink pearl. The worlds loveliest pearls are found in
Sulu.

9. Are you fond of eating gelatin or gulaman? Gelatin is rich in protein. Did you know that it comes from a
seaweed called agar? This floating seaweed is also used in canning fish and manufacturing paper.

10. Have you ever gathered shells on the seashore? They come in many sizes and colors. Some shells are
dark brown. Others are tan or lighter brown. There are pink, green, blue, and lavender shells too. Puca shells
are small but beautiful. They are made to into necklaces, earrings, and pints. Larger shells are used for
decoration.

11. Finally, we have beautiful corals in the Philippines. Coral reefs are formed by small animals related to sea
anemones and live together in groups. Coral polyps and other sea creatures that secret lime produce coral
formations. It takes many years to produce coral reefs. The winds pile up sand together with shells. Then birds
from seeds, and plants start growing on the coral reefs.
12. Red coral is so precious that it costs much. It is used for making coral beads and necklaces. Black coral is
also used in making jewelry. When mounted in gold and silver, it is very beautiful. Plenty of coral is found in our
seas, especially in Cebu and Davao. Foreign tourists have been gathering and exporting them. What should
we do to preserve these wonders of our seas?

Chronological, B for Cause and Effect, C for Problem and Solution, D for Compare and Contrast, E for
Process.

1. Education in our society serves many purposes, but there are three main functions. First, students
learn skills that will help prepare them for society. Writing, reading, and mathematics are essential in
todays workplace and many people learn these skills in school. Second, schools serve communities.
Whether by functioning as polling locations during elections, or providing safe havens for students in
temporary living situations, public schools add value to communities. Third, public schools provide a
structured environment for children to engage in productive activities during many days of the year
while their adult caretakers may be working. In other words, public schools also provide day care.
These are three of the primary reasons why we have schools in our society.

2. There is more than one way to have a successful school day, but a great way is to be well prepared.
The first thing you should do is complete your homework the night before. Dont try to do your work in
the morning, it will be too stressful and you may not have enough time. Next, you need to go to bed at
a reasonable time. If you stay up too late, you will not be able to focus on assignments or instruction as
well and you may even fall asleep during class. Lastly, you should wake up early. This will give you
time to get ready and feel good about yourself, and youll also be able to get something to eat before
the day begins. So remember, one way to have a successful school day is to do your homework the
night before, go to bed early, and wake up early. Have a great day.

3. Having good attendance is important because attendance determines the schools funding. Some
students have poor attendance, and the school has tried many ways of addressing this: teachers have
talked to parents on the phone and the school has mailed letters. Yet, some students still maintain poor
attendance. Next, the staff will attempt to schedule parent/teacher/administrator conferences with
students who are habitually absent. Hopefully, this will help more students get to school everyday.

4. These days, students and their parents have more choices when it comes to selecting a school. In
addition to the public schools, private schools have popped up in major cities and towns across the
country. Both private schools and public schools fill traditional roles like providing instruction, serving
lunch and other meals, and administering the tests. But private schools and public schools differ in
many important ways. One key difference is the amount of time students spend in school. In Manila,
students who attend public schools take shifts, one batch in the morning and one batch in the
afternoon. On the contrary, students who attend private schools spend the whole day in school. While
both public and private schools provide education to students, students who attend public schools do
not spend as much as students in private schools do.

5. The twist is a dance inspired by rock and roll music. To do the Twist, first stand with your feet
approximately shoulder width apart. The torso may be squared to the knees and hips, or turned at an
angle so one foot is farther forward than the other. Then, hold your arms out from your body, bent at
your elbow. Next, rotate your hips, torso, and legs as a single unit with your arms staying more or less
stationary. Every so often lift one leg off of the floor for styling. Now youre doing the twist!

6. There are many reasons why people dance. Some people dance for fun, just because they enjoy
dancing. At other times, people dance for exercise or for weight loss, because dancing can really get
your heart beating. Also, sometimes people dance to try to get boyfriends or girlfriends. Some people
think that good dancing is attractive. There are many reasons why people dance.

7. The agricultural sector faced a lot of problems. The growth in population outpaced the growth in
production. Occasional droughts and floods contributed to the shortfall. Research had ground to a halt
because of the lack of funds. As a result, the government was forced to import rice to fill the demand.

8. Months ago, Lizzy was encouraged by her friends to run for the student council head, at first, she
was reluctant for fear of taking so much responsibility. However, she then took the challenge and
eventually won in the election. As leader, she initiated a few changes and started new programs for the
betterment of the organization. Many are happy with her leadership. She gets along well with her co-
members and is learning so much how to deal with varied personalities.

9. Although work and school are different avenues to develop oneself, they are very much similar in at
least three ways. First, both require an early start. Going to work requires getting up early to avoid the
traffic rush, and going to school requires getting up early to catch train to school. Promptness is
important in both places. Being at work on time pleases the employer; being in class on time pleases
the instructor. Second, both involve quotas to ensure maximum production. For instance, a certain
amount of phone calls must be made by a secretary. Likewise, school imposes quotas on a student to
ensure maximum effort. For example, a certain number of essays must be written in an English
composition class or a specific number of books must be read. Finally, both at work and school people
socialize and make friends. In short, there are some similarities between school and work life.
10. Breaking up with a boyfriend or girlfriend can be easier said than done, but here are five steps that
may help the breaking up process. First try to distance yourself by suddenly becoming busier than
usual. The next step is to calmly tell the other person that how you are feeling. Then gently let him or
her know that you do not want to be together anymore. Then make sure to be sensitive of his or her
feelings and answer any questions that he or she may have. For example, if the person starts to cry,
use kind words to help comfort him or her. After everything is said and done, take some alone time for
yourself because everyone has feelings to sort out after a break up. Finally, go out with friends and
meet new people. With these five steps it will make the breaking up process smooth for both parties.
