6-8 Grade Health The student will understand the relationship of nutritional to healthy living.

Facilitator - Educators facilitate learning with technology to support student achievement of the ISTE
Standards for Students.

Designer - Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and
accommodate learner variability.

Measurable learning objective/s

The students will be able to identify the nutritional value (Protein, Carbohydrates, Fat, AKA Macronutrients)
of the foods used at their Thanksgiving with their families, by calculating the nutrients in each serving. By
also identifying the different kinds of foods they will come to a better understanding of different cultures
and backgrounds.

Lesson Assessment:
Pre-assessment (used to plan for differentiation and provides data that is applicable to this lesson)
Open class discussion over what food is served at their families Thanksgiving Feast.

Formative (informs instruction throughout the lesson)

Checklist of proteins, fats, and carbs of each food selection served.

Record of Formative Assessment (individual record of level of mastery)

I will monitor their assessment by walking around and taking down notes.

Summative Student generated evidence of mastery of lesson objective

Lesson Plan Ideas (Short Form)

Fill out the worksheet given out towards the end of class.

Diverse Student Needs (including disabilities) (accommodations/adaptations)

Print out worksheet in different languages if needed, also have extended time to let students present orally.

Procedures: (with estimated times for each section and activity)

I. Exploration or Discovery: (activity to establish a conceptual connection to the lesson)
o Enduring Understanding provokes thought, transferable, worth investigation
Ask students to list foods that might be found at a Thanksgiving feast with their families.

o Essential questions First must be related to the Enduring Understanding, others related to content
Are these foods different or are they the same, why?
Are these foods healthy for them, why or why not?

II. Accessing Prior Knowledge - Means used to connect todays lesson with previous learning and means used to
allow students to recall and show experiences relating to lessons topic.
Open class discussion about are these foods similar or different to the original Thanksgiving Feast,
why?
End of day 1

III. Academic Language (terms to be used during instruction)

Economy, geography, turkey, Thanksgiving food, nutrition, farm, food, production, online searching,
Online forums,

IV. Lesson Development, Modeling, Guided Practice (also opportunities to use written and oral
language)
I will, we will, they will.
I will show them pictures and examples of how I want it done, we will do one together and then they
will do the rest by themselves or in groups if they want to.
I will also take this time to show them how to calculate ones calories for the next lesson. With the
Online calculator.
I will show them how and where to search for the calorie count they need to do the lesson.
I will also take this time to help anyone who needs individual help.
End of day 2

V. Group Activity / Independent Work : Critical Thinking/Problem Solving

Application/Analysis/Synthesis/Evaluation/Creating Enduring Understanding :
Look over the chart on the board and answer the corresponding questions that go along.
They will also take this time to calculate the nutritional value of their own Thanksgiving meals,
in the same groups. They will do this using the handouts provided.

VI. Closure: Final connection and evidence of mastery of GLE or lesson objective; Use or review of - Essential Questions; Big Idea/student reflection
Thanksgiving worksheet, discuss with the class what they learned, and if any of it was new.

Modifications Done:
At first I only allowed for students to do the math, when calculating for macronutrients, now I am
allowing them to use an online calculator to help them. I am also allowing them this time to use online search
engines and forums to find the calorie count they need when computing. Lastly, I added a Kahoot quiz at the
end of the assignment and took out the paper quiz. This allows for a more fun testing environment.
