Proposal for FYP

Project Title:

Description:
Waste is now a global problem, and one that must be addressed in order to solve the world's
resource and energy challenges. Every year we dump a massive 2.12 billion tons of waste. One
of the most obvious impacts of rapidly increasing urbanization and economic development can
be witnessed in the form of heaps of municipal solid waste. Based on estimates, waste generation
in Asia has reached 1 million tons per day. A World Bank study showed that urban areas in Asia
spent USD25 million per year on solid-waste management, and this figure will increase to
USD47 million per year.

Solid-waste management is a major challenge in urban areas throughout the world. Without an
effective and efficient solid-waste management program, the waste generated from various
human activities, both industrial and domestic, can result in health hazards and have a negative
impact on the environment.

Concrete is the most widely-used construction material with over ten billion tons produced
annually. About 7% of global CO2 emissions come from concrete production. The primary
source of CO2 emissions generated by concrete manufacturing is Portland cement, responsible
for 74% to 81% of total CO2 emissions. In BituBlock, the bitumen binder replaces the Portland
cement.

Aim and Objectives:

The main aim of this work is to reduce the waste that is rising in the present world and to convert
it into useful products.

The development of this new range of building units is driven by the issue of sustainability, both
nationally and globally, and this complete replacement of traditional aggregates is possible
because BituBlock uses bitumen as the binder. Our aim is to replace concrete as a structural
material, Bitublocks use up to 100% waste materials and avoid sending them to landfill, which is
quite unheard of in the building industry. What's more, less energy is required to manufacture the
BituBlock than a traditional concrete block, and it's about six times as strong, so it's quite a high-
performance product.
