(Mita Leet al ee ae "INTRODUCTION _ one of those yarns, suit toe pethaps ‘The finishing touch... Have you ever completed an afghan and thought there was just something missing? It was really pretty but...vell, it seemed to need something else and it wasn't fringe! What that afghan probably needed was a border. And this book gives you 50 of them, which can be added to just about any afghan, whether it's knitted or crocheted, to provide the finishing touch. Some of the borders are wide and ruffled, some are narrow and tailored, Others are very feminine, some are more masculine. All of them are fun to work and will turn the plainest afghan into some- thing very special. Work the borders in whatever weight yarn you used for the main part of the afghan—baby, sport, or worsted. Avoid heavy yarns, and textured or fuzzy yarns, as they don't work well for borders. If you want to add a border to an afghan made with HOW TO USE THE BORDERS PREPARING THE AFGHAN When the afghan is completed, use either the main color or another color of your choice to work a single crochet Foundation Round around the entire piece. This round is very important, because all of our border patterns are worked into this round. It usually establishes the correct number (or multiple) of stitches you will need to work a given border. If such a finishing round was not included in the original alghan pattern, you may need to buy additional yarn for it. If you are going to use a wide border, you may wish to make the original afghan slightly smaller, MULTIPLES Each border patiern starts with a “multiple” that looks like this: Multiple: 6 + 2 sts A multiple is the number of stitches needed to complete one unit of a pattern. While a multiple can be given in several ways, in this book, a multiple means the number of stitches required to work the first row or round of a border to make it come out even In the example of a 6 + 2 multiple, you will need to have any number of stitches which is divisible evenly by 6: 72 or L44 or 288 for example. To this you will add the “+2”, giving a total of 74, or 146, or 290, The “+” number is added just once The correct multiple is usually established when you work the Foundation Round. If it is established on a different row or round, this is stated, MULTIPLES FOR TWO-SIDED BORDERS When borders are worked on the ends only, multiples are counted from, and including, the center stitch of the first corner to, and including, the center stitch of the opposite corner. MULTIPLES FOR FOUR-SIDED BORDERS When borders are worked on all four sides, multiples are sometimes counted including the stitches on all four sides and all four corners. This is done when there is nota prominent corner treatment. On these borders, you can “ludge” the stitch count a bit by skipping or adding a stitch here and there on the Foundation Round or the first round of the border. The multiple given may add “along each side”. That means the multiple is counted on each side from corner to corner, but NOT including the center comer stitches This is used when the corner treatment is prominent. When counting stitches, it is helpful to place a small safety pin in every 15th stitch. FOUNDATION ROUND Hold the afghan with its top right side facing you. Join the yarn with asl st in the first stat the top right corner; ch 1, then work 3 sc in the same st for the first comer: now work sc in each st across the top to the next comer, work 3 sc in last st for corner, increasing or decreasing as needed for the multiple. Working now along the side, work se in the sides of rows, adjusting sts as you work to keep the work flat, and again, adjust sts as needed for the multiple. Work 3 sc in the bottom of the last row, then work sc in each unused Ip of the beginning ch, working the multiple, 3 sc in last ch for corner; work sc across side as before, in the correct multiple, then join with a sl st in beg sc of rd. Finish off and weave in all ends. Now your afghan is ready for a border! ESTIMATING YARN AMOUNTS This requires some simple math. The amount of yarn needed will depend upon the size of the afghan to which the border will be added. For a two-sided border that will go on only the top and bottom of the afghan, you will need to know the width (nartow measurement) only; for a four- sided border that will go around all four sides, you will need to know the width and the length. YARN FORA FOUR-SIDED BORDER Multiply the width by 2, then the length by 2, and add these two sums together. For example, for an afghan that is 40” by 60” your work will look like this: 40" x 2 = 80" 60" x 2= 120" Total: 200" This is the measurement of the outside edge. You will need enough yarn to work the entire border for 200" Next you'll need to crochet a small test square of the border, Work a piece in single or double crochet that is about 5" x 5", using scrap yarn of the same weight as your afghan. Then, with scrap yarn of the same weight as you intend for your border, work all the rows of the border onto this square. This also gives you a chance to practice the border pattern. Now you'll need to rip out the border you just worked and measure ot weigh the length of yarn you used. Since the test square was 5” by 5", its outside edge is 25". So you will need 10 times this length or weight for the 250 linear inches of the actual afghan. To this you'll need to add some extra yarn to be sure you don’t run out, perhaps 10% more, When you have the final amount in inches, divide by 36 to determine the number of yards. HOW TO USE THE BORDERS continued YARN FORA TWO-SIDED BORDER Measure the width of the afghan and multiply by 2. Uf the width is 40", the coral will be 80" With scrap yarn of the same weight as the afghan, make a chain about 10" ong in the multiple specified with each border, and work one row of single crochet as a hase. Then with yarn of the same weight as you intend for your border, work all rows of the border on this piece. Again, rip it out, figure the yarn length or weight used and multi- ply it by 8 to get the 80 linear inches needed. Add at least 10% extra. When you have the final amount in inches, divide by 36 to determine the mumber of yards, ABOUT COLORS... We've shown some borders worked in more than one color. You can make these all in one color if you prefer. Some of the borders we've shown in one color would look wonderful worked in wo or more colors. The choice is yours. For instance, “rep from* three times” means that after working the instructions once, you must work them again three times for a total of + times in alll + A dagger (or double daggerst*) indicates those instructions that will be repeated again later in the same row or round. : The mumber afier a colon tells you the number of stiches you will have when you haye completed the row or round. © Parentheses enclose instructions which are to be worked the number of times following the parentheses. For instance, “(ch1, se, chL) 3 times” means that you will chain one, work one se, and then chain once again three times for a total of six chains and 3se. Parentheses often set off or clarify a group of stitches to be worked into the same space or stitch. For instance, “(dc, ch2, de) in corner sp.” 1] Brackets and ( ) parentheses are also used to give you additional information. TERMS Front Loop—This is the loop toward you at the top of the stitch Back-Loop—This is the loop away from you at the top of the stitch Post—This is the vertical har of the stitch Join—This means to join with a sl st unless. another stitch is specified. Finish Off—This means to end your piece by pulling the yarn through the last loop remaining on the hook. This will prevent the work from unraveling The border patterns in this book have been written using the crochet terminology that is used in the United States.
