Introduction

This paper examines the article Racism and bullying in rural primary schools written by

the authors kalwant Bhopal and Martin Myers while analyzing ethos, pathos and logos. Ethos

involves the credibility someone has while developing a argument some examples of that could

be the facts and evidence that is proven while defending the argument. Pathos deals with emotion

and the emotional appeal that is take, while using pathos a persuasive appeal can also be

involved within the argument, this can be shown through interviews that are presented as

evidence through the argument, they show the point of view a person has, that sometimes can

bring emotion to the paper. And lastly logos, logos deals with the logic of the writers argument,

this can be included by adding facts and statistics that satisfy your arguments and show the

audiences that your argument is being supported with facts and elements concerning your point

of views throughout the argument.

In the Norton Field Guide varies topics about arguing a position are mention. This introduces

actions that should be taken. For example, develop support for your reasons, and make sure that

your argument is set and facts can be shown throughout the argument, also this should include

credible evidence that support the argument. This topics is also included acknowledging others

positions while arguing the topic, it allows you to have an open mind and contrast your views of

points with others to have a successful argument. Throughout the chapter many other topics are

mention but the main goal was to guide students through the process of developing an argument

successfully. Ethos, Pathos and logos are elements that can be involved while developing and

argument.

In the article Racism and bullying in rural primary schools composed by Martin Myers and

Kalwant Bhopal posted in the British Journal of Sociology of Education shows all the examples
that ethos, pathos and logos are composed. This article shows a strong argument, deals with

emotion and shows primary credibility throughout the arguments that are made, this argument is

concentrated in racism in the rural area mainly in schools, it examines how kids that go to mainly

white schools are being affected because of racism. This argument is being supported through a

case study that introduces interviews to schools staffs as well as parents of kids that go to this

mainly white populated schools, this interviews support the argument that is made in the article

and give readers the incites or more personal appeal of what the main problem is.

Throughout the article a lot of perspectives that relate to logos are shown. As mention before

logos concerns with the logic the author makes in sense of its argument and how the argument is

held throughout the article. In the article Racism and bullying in rural primary schools the

argument is held is racism. The article examined how racism is view differently among white

rural population and involves the racial problem that is being held in manly white rural schools

throughout the article various points of racism and how racisms is held in this rural schools

among staff are introduced that logically relate to the argument for example in the article is

mention The equality act, this act specify that discrimination is not accepted in schools no matter

the sex, race, disability, religion, beliefs or sexual orientation (P.128). But mainly white rural

schools seem to look over the act that protect students from all this discriminatory actions. The

argument that is made continues by introducing the majority which in this case is the whites the

article mentions and introduces the argument of withes being the majority and having more

power than non-white the article mentions that because of this the whites are more favorable and

have an advantage while defending themselves in this rural over white populated schools.

Pathos deals with emotion and throughout the article due to the view of point of the authors

and the interviews that were held is very simple to identify pathos trades. Pathos appears when
the article begins, the death of one of the victims is mention in the article Racism and bullying

in rural primary schools, in 1993 the assassination of Stephen Lawrence who was a black

teenager brought awareness to the community of south-east London and resulted in a public

trauma to the public because the Metropolitan police were the responsible of this murder. Pathos

is brought to place because due to this murder introduced in the article awareness and sympathy

appears toward the injustice people of color were facing though Stephen murder. Pathos also

appears through the interviews that were held in mainly white school to the parents and staff of

this school. All parents stated that their kids were experiencing bullying in fact the related to the

treatment as Racist Bullying, the parents stated that the bullying was not superficial that it was

characterized by being repeated consistently and this referred to as name calling but in some

cases physical harm was used. A case study were also introduce to the article introducing a

Southside primary school. In the case study of the Southside primary school dealt with Jonathan

a boy who was being bullied and mane called because he was of color, when the mother noted

different behavior. She question Jonathan which confirmed he was being bullied by his class

mates when brought to the school the school discriminated his family because of the color of

their skin, We were the ones who were seen as trouble makers because we dared to make

complaints and take it forward, Jonathons mother mention. The school was not helpful of the

situation therefore Jonathan was moved to a paid private school.

Various case studies and interviews were presented throughout the article. This involves ethos

which relates to the primary credibility that is being held when making an argument. Case

studies and Interviews were held in the article with the purpose of showing the readers prove to

the argument of racism in the schools. While reading the article two views of points can be noted

due to the case studies that were presented. The first case study approaches the problem in the
eastside schools which accused the parents of the mistreatment and the bully the kids were

receiving. The second case study introduced the acceptance and problem solving mechanism the

Southside school had. The interviews focused more on the staff of the schools and how bully was

held when brought up to the school, in all cases the teachers and staff referred to bullying as not

being acceptable. We work very hard in this school to keep its reputation, we are an

outstanding school and we work hard to maintain that. We want to make sure we keep that and

so we do what we have to do and deal with things so that they dont happen again. The children

and the parents know what we do and we do it well and they know when something is dealt with,

it is finished and we move on.( Mrs. Freeman).

Conclusion

In conclusion the article connects perfectly with the definition of ethos, logos and patho. Ethos

relates to the article due to the interviews and case studies that were presented in the article,

logos introduces the writers argument that is presented throughout the article and lastly pathos

that deals with emotion. Through the article emotion was presented due to the case study and the

points of views of the parents and the way the school acted toward the problem. Overall the

author met the exigency.
