Group Project Due December 11 at 10:05am

1. (10 points) Consider a rod of length , with a linearly

density varying along the -axis as: = / = 2 ,
where is a constant (see figure).
a) (2 points) Calculate in terms of the rods mass, ,
and length, .
b) (3 points) Find the -coordinate of the rods center
of mass. Hint: /2
c) (3 points) Find the moment of inertia of the rod about an axis perpendicular to the length of
the rod at the origin, = 0 (see figure).
d) (2 points) Calculate the moment of inertia of the rod about an axis perpendicular to the axis
of the rod at its center of mass (see figure). Hint: Consider using the parallel axis theorem.

2. (10 points) A block of mass is attached to a block of mass 2 by a light

string wrapped over a uniform disk of mass 3 and radius that can rotate on
a horizontal axle (see figure). The block of mass is initially held in place and
the string is taught. When the block is released and free to move, find:
a) (4 points) The speed of the block of mass after it has risen a height .
b) (4 points) The angular acceleration of the disk.
c) (2 points) The tension in the string attached to mass and in the string
attached to mass 2.

3. (10 points) A marble of mass is held against the side of a

hemispherical bowl, as shown in the figure, and then
released. It rolls without slipping and the dashed curve
shows the path of the center of the marble. The initial
position of the marble is such that it makes angle of 30 with
the vertical (see figure). The marble radius is = 10 mm,
and the radius of the bowl is = 100 mm.
a) (7 points) Find the angular speed of the marble when it
reaches the bottom.
b) (3 points) What is the linear speed of the center-of-mass?
4. (10 points) Two identical pucks and , each of mass , are connected
by a rod pf length and negligible mass that is free to rotate about a
fixed axis of rotation at its center. Puck , of mass /2, initially moving
at velocity , hits puck head-on. After the collision, in which no
energy is lost, find:
a) (7 points) The rotational speed of the dumbbell.
b) (3 points) The velocity (magnitude and direction) of puck .

5. (10 points) You want to hang a 10 kg sign by using a pivot to attach the base of
a 5.0 kg beam to a wall (see figure). You then attach a cable to the beam and
to the wall in such a wall that the cable and beam are perpendicular to each
other. The beam is 2.0 m long and makes an angle of 37 with the vertical. You
hang the sign from the end of the beam attached to the cable.
a) (5 points) What must be the minimum tensile strength (minimum amount
of tension it can sustain) if it is not to snap?
b) (5 points) Determine the horizontal and vertical components of the force
exerted by the pivot on the beam.

6. (10 points) A uniform rod of mass and length lies along and -axis with its center at
the origin. A ball of mass is located at position on the -axis.
a) (4 points) Write an expression for the gravitational potential energy of the ball and a small
element of the rod located at position .
b) (4 points) Integrate your expression over the length of the rod to determine an expression
for the potential energy of the system for > /2.
c) (2 points) Calculate the force on the ball as a function of its position, , along the -axis.
Hint: You may find the expression = /, usefull.
