 ABSTRACT

War Experience Aspect of Park, Wan-seos Novel

This thesis is intended to observe as to how personal war experience was

embodied with a literary imagination in the literary world of Park, Wan-seo.
Park, Wan-seo is criticizing divided reality by embodying unhealed trauma
and victim mentality that were left to all of our people for over half century
as her works through a personal trauma of war experience. That is to say
that the author not only revealed trauma through an analytic foundation of
an epic that handles war and family issues but also portrayed broad epic
world, war and division, separated family issue and its conquest.
She had linked the situation in 70s with contradiction of worldly false
consciousness generated from war in a literary fashion and in the early 70s,
she had focused on portraying war trauma that she had personally
experienced and from the middle of 70s, linked it with contradictory
realistic issue entailed by war. This means that writing of Park, Wan-seo
doesn't stop at writing of personal healing but it has been developed to a
matured stage in which peace and harmony are desired while war and
violence are criticized. In this respect, it is considered that researching her
literary world would be meaningful.
Therefore, based on 'Bare tree", "Thirsty Season", "For four days in that
autumn", "Mom's Stake 2" Winter of that year was warm"" "Wasn't that
mountain there really", this thesis had contemplated distress, conflict and
confrontation that our people were destined to be faced with due to the
war, how trauma of human egoism and victim mentality were depicted and
represented through main character of her works and how such trauma was
overcome.
It could be realized that in view of the above, conflict occurrence of a
novel of Park, Wan-seo includes even a nature of external conflict created
by a social issue surpassing a personal matter. Through a story of a
character under conflict over a disaster called war, particularly over death
of her older brother, the author had dramatized this story as a social,

historical issue of war. The author had emphasized a recognition that war is
trauma for all of us through the works of war experience while having the
character of the works criticize tragic nature of war through conflict.
This thesis has induced thematic consciousness of the works as follows
with targeting the works that represent aspect of war experience
outstandingly based on this recognition.
"Bare Tree" embodies a tragic nature of war experience through a novel. In
this works, factors of conflict experienced by the characters is an incident
leading to brother's death due to war and another conflict is created in the
life of mon and daughter due to absence of man. Meaning of life to mom
who lost her son was disappeared and as for daughter, by having her feel
guilty for being alive, hatred between mon and daughter was sprung up.
While showing how severe trauma and distress death of a brother would
inflict upon a personal life through deepened conflict experienced by the
daughter of the main character, the author accused violent nature of war
and division.
This tragic war experience was embodied based on war trauma interfered in
the current life in "For Four Days in That Autumn" and in a form of
behind-the-scene story of mom and daughter trying to heal the brother
dead in the war and its trauma in "Mom's Stake 2".
"Winter of Day Year Was Warm" is a work that portrays a nature of family
division taken place under the situation called war based on a tragic epic
story of three brothers and sisters.
"Thirsty Season" and "Wasn't that mountain there really?" are outstanding
works for its surprisingly realistic portrayal of the Korean War. In
particular, these works have their significance in terms of the fact that a
volition of overcoming division is shown through aesthetic embodiment of
the works surpassing a sharp accuse for the violent nature of war.
