Spectral Color Conundrum

2 days [10 minutes the second day to finalize samples 1-5.]

Materials [insert image]

Data Collection

Objective: To recreate the masterminds sample set, #s1-5, using trial and error, to figure out the correct ratios of
liquid volume for the spectral colors necessary to make each 20 mL sample.

Notes:
Document your groups trials T1-T5, and final samples, #s 1-5, below, by typing in the amounts [in mL] for each
spectral color used to make the sample, and inserting a PB image for the final color outcome.

The max volume for any sample is always 20 mL

The individual spectral colors are always whole amount of mL.
Cover test tube with thumb, flip, and shake to evenly distribute the colors.

#1 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 15-5

#2 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 10-7-3
#3 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 13-7
#4 - 3 colors Ratio of colors 9-7-4
#5 - 2 colors Ratio of colors 18-2

T2 Blue-10 20

T3 Blue-13 20

T4 Blue: 9 20 mL
Purple: 7

II. Analyze Results

1. Identify your groups final results for each sample, #s 1-5 below, by filling in each color [in bold] after the correct
ratio listed for that color needed to make the sample. * TBP = colors to be provided

Sample # of Ratio of Colors Groups Results Ratio of Colors Actual Value [*TBP]
# Colors Total = 20 mL Total = 20 mL

1 2 15 [red] : 5 [Yellow] [ Red ]: [ yellow]

2 3 10 [Blue] : 7 [Purple] : 3 {Green] [ blue ] :[ red ]: [ green ]

3 2 13 [Blue] : 7 [Yellow] [ blue ] [ yellow ]

4 3 9 [ blue ] : 7 [ p

5 2 18 [yellow ] : 2 [Green] [ yellow ] [ blue ]

2. What was your groups overall initial emotional reaction to this challenge?
In the beginning, we thought it was going to be a lot of work to complete this lab successfully,
accurately and on time. However, when we started working together on it and measuring the color
calibrations, we realized that we now understood how to measure accurately, precisely, and efficiently,
from completing and learning from the last lab. This resulted in an efficient and successful lab.

3. How did your group choose to begin, as in, what was the groups initial step
We began by first calibrating the colors so we could then mix and measure them to complete our lab
with success.

4. Based on the Ratios of Colors Actual Value provided by the teacher, how did your group measure up in terms of
accuracy? Support your response comparing your results with the results the teacher provided.
We measured in terms of accuracy because we used the graduated cylinders to measure the samples
before we went to the testing tubes.

5. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the easiest for your group to
figure out and explain why.
(NR) The samples that were the easiest for our group to complete were the samples with the least
amount of colors. So sample 1, 3, and 5 were the easiest to complete because we had the least amount
of room for error as you could only mix two colors. All of them we thought we got on the first try but
there was one that we messed up on and didnt mix correctly. This was sample 5 were we mixed 18 mL of
yellow and 2 mL of green but when the correct color mix was revealed to us we understood why it was
18 mL of yellow and 2 mL of blue. This made the exact color. (which was more green than our color)
6. Based on your groups experience collecting the data, identify which sample[s] was the most difficult for your
group to figure out and explain why.
The most difficult samples that we collected was the samples with the most amount of colors being
sample numbers 2 and 4. This is because there is a more chance to make a measurement mistake with
3 colors than 2 colors.
