MENG 371 Test 2 May 6, 2001 ID:

1a) (20) How would you use Dynacam (i.e. what would you enter) to design and size an
double-dwell cam to move a follower from 0 to 2 in 60, dwell for 120, fall 2 in 30
and dwell for the remainder. Total cycle must be 4 sec. Choose suitable programs to
minimize accelerations.
b) (5) Would you expect to need eccentricity for the follower? Why or why not?
c) (5) Why would you want to minimize acceleration?

2) In the linkage shown in two positions, link A (thickness 2t) is connected to link B by a
roller (radius r). It is given that when link A rotates clockwise an angle a from its
starting position (which you can define), link B will rotate an angle b (also clockwise).
a) (10) What vector loop(s) define the given constraints?
b) (5) How many free choices are there?
c) (20) Choose the variables for your free choices and solve for the remaining variables.
d) (20) Assuming that you have designed your linkage, how could you use MATLAB to
solve for b given a constant a. Assume you have already done the position analysis so
all the necessary variables have been defined. (You may want to do some algebra prior to
writing the MATLAB code.)
e) (10) What mathematical relationship(s) holds for the accelerations? (You do not have to
solve the equation(s))

3) (8) The figure shows the SVAJ diagram for a constant velocity cam design, with half-
cycloidal functions used as transitions to the constant velocity. Why is this design not as
good as the design using polynomials?
