Students will write a final draft of their final paper on Ethnic Hash.
Students will read and present their paper in front of the class in the Cafe

Student Background:
Students have been learning and discussing each part of the Identity Wheel, which include race,
ethnicity, language, culture, age, ability, class, gender, sexuality, and religion. They have been
able to reflect on how each section coincide with each other and how each section affects them
in society. They had used People Bags to reflect on each aspect of their identity, and they will
be using what they used to fuel their understanding of the short narrative Ethnic Hash. They
will either be using evidence from the text to choose the dish the narrator should bring, and
reflect on the label that they gave the narrator. They can also write their own narrative using the
identities they shared with the People Bags, which was the formative assessment for this final
paper. They have written their final papers and are ready to present their papers and food in
front of the class.

Materials and Resources:

Ethnic Hash
Their People Bags
Identity Wheel
Final Draft
Their food and drink of choice

Lesson Activities:

1. Initiation: I will come into the room and set up the room like a cafe. I will dim the lights
and turn on the lamps in my classroom. I will lay out table clothes and a place for food
and drink. The students will set up their own food and drink in that area and they can
take a moment to grab food before they present their work.
2. Lesson Activities: I will share my own version of the story as a model of what I am
expecting.
3. One at a time, they will come up, and share their paper at the front of the room. I will
draw names if there are no volunteers.
4. They will share the food they brought and why they brought it and what is has to do with
the story if it is relevant.
5. Each student will applaud each other at the end of their paper and will be given a second
to grab food and chat. Then the next will come up.
6. If time permits it, I will come up at the end and share the actual ending of Ethnic Hash
that was released with the story as a closer for them to think about the ending and their
choices.
7. Homework: In their Interactive Notebooks, I will have them write about the experience
of reading their work out loud and how they felt. I will also have them reflect on the
ending of the story. Did they enjoy it or no? Why or why not? Was it expected? How was
theirs different? How do they feel knowing the ending?
