CHAPTER THREE
Research Methodology

This chapter covers the research locale, research design, respondents of the study,
data collection instruments, data gathering procedure, and the statistical treatment of data.

3.1. Research Locale

The researchers chose to conduct the study in University of Science and Technology of
Southern Philippines located at C.M. Recto Avenue, Lapasan provided that it contains
appropriate participants that are beneficial to the study. The specified subjects are the
Grade 12 Senior High Students. The university could also help the researchers to gain
reliable sources that can be useful for future generations.

3.2. Respondents of the Study

All grade 12 senior high school students taking up STEM-related courses will be given
survey questionnaires each. There are 17 sections containing around 40-45 students each
class. But more specifically the subjects are those who have low/failing marks in their
previous semester. Only 250 subjects will be selected as respondents in this study.

3.3. Research Design

This study adopted a descriptive survey design to answer the research questions of this
study. Its main purpose is to observe, describe, document and help uncover new facts and
meaning on aspects of a situation as it naturally occurs. The researchers selected a
descriptive survey design since it attempts to describe the characteristics of the variables
of this study which are the effects of family stress towards students academic performance.
The researchers would use this type of research design because the study is more on getting
descriptions orally/verbally or through answers form the questionnaires given.
3.4. Instrumentation
We the researchers will use four (4) of the instruments which are Survey Questionnaire,
Tally Sheets, Laptop, and Calculator. The Survey Questionnaire would serve as a tool for
us to collect, analyze, and interpret the view of the respondents. The Tally Sheets helps us
record the number of repeated answers that were answered by the respondents to be later
analyzed by the researchers. The Laptop is a tool for us to input our results and to help us
organize properly the results that we have obtained. The Calculator is also a tool in helping
us find the specific percentage of the result so that the task at hand will be easier for the
researchers

3.5. Data Gathering Procedure

The procedure for data collection will be as follows: Permission will be requested from the
respective sample showing that the study is for academic purposes. Written questionnaires
will be hand delivered to the subjects. The subjects will be instructed not to reveal their
identity and are assured that the information given will be purely for research purpose and
will not affect them individually.

When the respondents are done answering the given survey, the researchers will then
collect all the data. After this, the researchers will compute the percentage that the
respondents got from their test results. This will be recorded on the tally sheets made by
the researchers when the computation is done. This will help the researchers know as to
what is the greatest factor that negatively affects students academic performance. The
result of the respondents would be exclusive only to the researcher and to the respondent
if interested.

3.6. Statistical Treatment of Data

Responses to the questionnaire by senior high school students were statistically analyzed
with the data requirements of the study. Students were statistically analyzed with the data
instruments of the study. Descriptive statistics such as frequency count, mean, percent and
rank are considered. To know if there is a correlation between the independent and
dependent variables Pearson Product Moment of Correlation Coefficient was utilized with
0.05 level of significance.

To interpret the data effectively, the researchers will employ the following statistical
treatment. The Percentage, Weighted Mean and T-test are the tools use to interpret data.
1. Percentage
This will employ to determine the frequency counts and percentage distribution of related
variables of the respondents.

Formula:
% is the percentage
F is the Frequency
N is the total number of respondents
100 is a constant value
2. Average Weighted Mean

This will be used to determine the assessment of the respondents with regards to their

personal profiles.

Formula:

X is the weighted mean

F is the frequency

x is the weight of each item

N is the number of cases

3. Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA)

This will helpful in making comparison of two or more means which enables a
researcher to draw various results and predictions about two or more sets of data.

Steps in ANOVA
1. First step is to compute the total sum of the squares.
2. Second step is to compute the squares between columns.
3. The third step is to compute for the sum of squares within the column
4. To complete the ANOVA table, calculate the mean of sum of squares.
