 Ductility : Permanent deformation due to load without fracture.
 Hardness : Resistance to wear and tear, scratching, indentation.
 Toughness : Shock absorbing capacity without fracture.

To find out the resistive power of different materials for various properties.

5.0 APPARATUS AND MATERIALS


Apparatus: Universal Testing Machine(UTM), Compression Testing
Machine(CTM), Impact Testing Machine, Brinell Hardness Testing Machine,
Rockwell Hardness Testing Machine, Torsion Testing Machine.
Materials: Specimen of mild steel of standard dimensions.

7.0 STEPWISE PROCEDURE:


Know your laboratory :
Overview of different types of machines used for finding strength of various materials and their
sample operation shall be studied in this experiment.
1. Write down the specifications of the machine.
2. Measure the plan area required for the installation of machine in terms of length and breadth.
( The values shall be nearest to 1/10 th of meter )
3. Measure the working area around machine with machine in terms of length and breadth.
( The values shall be nearest to 1/10 th of meter )
4. Identify if there is any alternative arrangement for the machine to be used in case of power
failure.(For electrically operated machines only)
5. Put on the machine and observe the type of loading.
6. Study the working of machine.
7. Teacher shall conduct any one of the test on UTM ( Preferable tension test on mild steel )
