2. Population Settlement: Different physical features have affected human settlement in many ways.
First off places with local water sources such as rivers or lakes are highly populated and are very popular
for people to settle in as they have many resources. Also places with physical features such as mountains,
waterfalls, and canyons are more common for tourism but are not ideal settlement areas. The different
climates can also affect how people settle. Places with less extreme climates are more likely to be settled
in. More extreme climates require a lot of human adaptation to live in. For example, in canada most of the
population is in the south because in the north there is more extreme climate and it is very cold so most
people do not want to live there.

4. Climate:
North America has a vast range of climates. In the US, toward the west coast and the south there is more
warm climates and along the north and the east there is colder climates. Also most of Canada has a very
cold polar climate. The climate has been changing though. Climate change in North America is caused by
human effects such as burning fossil fuels and creating pollution. Both of these things contribute to adding
greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere which causes global warming and the greenhouse effect. This
climate change is hurting many ecosystems and habitats and is also creating more natural disasters as it
increases sea levels.

6. Climographs:
Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles,California has very high temperatures all year round. It also has little to almost no rain in the summer,
and a pretty low precipitation in other seasons. This gives LA a very dry and hot climate, almost like a desert. This
climate gives California several droughts each year.

New York City, New York

New York City has a broad range of temperatures throughout the years. It has mild to cold winters and warm
summers. Also it has a very constant rate of precipitation, it mainly stays high throughout the year. This mildly cold
climate attracts many people as it is very suitable for living in.
Toronto, Canada

Toronto has temperatures below freezing as it is in upper northern hemisphere. It has very cold
temperatures in winters and mild summers, Also the precipitation is very high throughout the year because
the freezing temperatures and rain cause a lot of snow.

Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver has a very wide range of temperatures all year. It has cold winters and hot summers. The
precipitation stays high in the winter and spring but is a little low in the summer and fall. Temperatures there
are not super extreme.
7. Public Health:
Humid Climates throughout North America can cause mosquitos which carry several diseases. Also in the
U.S. health care is not free and many people can not afford to get surgeries to cure diseases, this in turn
causes disease to spread a lot faster. While in Canada every citizen gets free healthcare so disease
spreads a lot slower. Also the increase in pollution can cause an increase in air born diseases. The
increase in poverty has also increased disease as the poor conditions are very unsanitary causes a lot of
people to be sick. Another thing that affects public health is immigration. As more people immigrate to
North America they bring with them disease this disease is then brought into the country with them.

8. Environmental Issues:
The first environmental issue in North America is pollution. In North America the burning of fossil fuels is
very important as it is used for heating and many other things. Although it is very important it has many
hazardous effects on the environment. Burning fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide, which is then let out into
the atmosphere. This then pollutes the air and add to the greenhouse effect which then causes global
warming and climate change. Pollution has many bad effects on the environment, it can kill organisms and
even create air born diseases.

The second environmental issue is pesticide use. Agriculture is one of the biggest industries in North
America. This high amount of farming and planting creates high use of pesticides. The problem with this is
that when there is a lot of pesticide use, the chemicals in the pesticide mix with the groundwater and
contaminate the oceans. As the groundwater gets contaminated it drains into river, lakes, and oceans and
contaminates them. This can be hazardous because it will kill several organisms who live in these bodies of
water.

2. Economic Development
North America has had a great amount of economic development throughout the years.
For example, in 1960 the GDP per capita was 17036.90 USD and now it is 52,194.90 USD.
These numbers alone show a huge shift in the economy and show its immense development
and growth. North America has a very developed economy. As we can see on the chart above
the life expectancy is very high which means more people work and pay taxes for longer in their
lives, this alone betters the economy. Also women are having less kids which means they are
devoting more there life to working and traveling this will also better the economy. Another thing
that shows that North America has a good economy is that the birth rate is much higher than the
death rate, this shows that most people have stable wealth conditions which means that they
are able to live longer.

5. Population Pyramids
1950 2017 2100

The population has changed drastically over the years. Just the actual population has
increased and is going to be in the overpopulation range anytime soon. Another fact is
that the amount of people living to 80 has increased which shows us how life condition
have bettered throughout the years. Also we can see that younger population has
decreased as more women are working jobs and traveling so they have less kids. Also
North America has changed its position on the demographic transition model. It has
gone from a less developed country in stage 2-3 to a more developed country in stage
4.

6. Economic Issues
One major economic issue in North America is the amount of minimum wage. People
argue that minimum wage is not enough for them to have a sustainable life. There are
many arguments on whether or not is should be raised. On one hand the government
would technically get more money since more people would be able to pay higher taxes.
Another reason is that more people would be able to buy stuff which would contribute to
the economy too. Also there would be less homeless people so the accommodation
economy would increase as well. Also families would have more money to support
themselves so the world would be happier place in general.

The second economic issue is to much military spending. Several people argue that the
government spends too much money on the military. They believe that rather than using
the money on the military we could be using it for public spending. Also since the
government gets most of money from the public they think that the money should go
toward them. Also they would rather be supporting public needs than pointless violence.

III.Political Information:
1. Political Details:
United States-
In my opinion people are lucky to live in a place like the United States. We all get
individual rights that let us express ourselves, legally, for who we truly are without fear of
punishment. This works because in the United States, the president, congress, and the
federal courts share powers and are restricted by the constitution. This government
system is known as a federal republic.
The United States government been through a lot to get to where it is today. The
US was first colonized by the British. Many people hated the British government as it
had too much power over the people and it charged them to much money for taxes.
This eventually caused the American Revolution which allowed them to break free from
this terrible government. When they were free they wrote a constitution with a set of law
that gave people rights and gave people power.
Having a federal republic comes with many advantages. One advantage is that
the people get to choose who represent them. The next advantage is that is practices
federalism, which ensures that all the power isnt just given to a central person or group,
rather that it is diffused among the state and federal governments. Also since state
governments have power, the citizens are more closely listened too. This state power
also makes solving conflicts a lot more efficient.
Although this form of government has many positives, it comes with a dark side.
First since states are able to make there own law it creates inequalities between them.
For example on state could spend more on education and another more of millitary, this
means one state would be more educated and the other would be more advanced in the
army. Another negative would be that states can fight against or refuse national policies
basically making them useless. This would also be disrespecting the Federal
government's power.
Americas government also has several different political parties. The two most
known would be Republicans and the Democrats. The Republicans stand for more
conservative issues and believe that the Federal government should have little power
over the people. The Democrats are the opposite. They have a more liberal stand on
issues and they believe that the federal government should have a more active role in
people's lives.

Canada-
Canadas government is very diverse. Rather than being one government it is a mix of
two different economic systems. These systems are a Representative Democracy and a
Constitutional Monarchy. In a representative democracy people can elect their
representatives at each level of government (federal, provincial or territorial, and
municipal). In a Constitutional Monarchy the Prime Minister is the head of government
(since this is a mix the people elect the Prime Minister).
Now the history of how Canada got these two governments is very interesting.
After France lost to Britain, Canada (a former french colony) became a british colony.
This made it a constitutional monarchy and made Queen Elizabeth II the head of state.
Canada became a country when four provinces joined together. When this happens the
decisions made about the government were that it would have a federal government
and that the parliament would have three sections. This lead them to a representative
democracy.
These two forms of government have several advantages. First an advantage of
a representative democracy is that the people have a voice. They are able to choose
their leaders and choose the people who represent them. Also having both a
constitutional monarchy and a representative democracy has many advantages. Since
a constitutional monarchy has the prime minister as the leader of the government, it
controls the power the people has this gives it a good balance between the people's
power and the government's power.
Although there are several advantages to Canada's government, there are also
some negatives. One problem with the government would be that sometimes there is
conflict between the two types. Sometimes the people feel overpowered by the prime
minister or the people have too much power over the prime minister. Another problem is
that most people dont understand Canadas government as it has many different
branches and types. This can make adjusting to the government for immigrants really
hard.
Lastly let's get into the different political parties in Canada. The first party is the
conservative party of Canada. This supports a stronger government. The next is the
green party. Lastly is the liberal party, which is more accepting and supports the
people's voice more than the government's.

Political-

Historical-
3. Changing boundaries:

The territory of North America has changed overtime. Some of the territories
have been taken by others and dont exist anymore. The United States boundaries have
spread and gained territory overtime. Canadas boundaries have shrunk and lost
territory overtime as the United States took over some of their land. Mexicos
boundaries have also shrunk and lost territory overtime too as the United States took
over approximately half of the land. Then there were a few adjustments to the
boundaries here and there and everything has remained more or less the same for quite
some time now. The borders changed either due to treaties, wars, settlement, or etc.
throughout history.

4. Colonization:

Economic Social Political Environmental

As more settlers Disease and Early in the As the population

businesses and spread to as colonization settlement grows

As population settlers formed due to other clearing to

5. Political Issues:
Some political issues have been around for a while but not until recently did they
surface, for example unequal pay. Unequal pay has been a huge issue in North America
causing strikes, protests, and other acts of rebel. Currently the growing trend for
womens rights and equality has taken a huge toll on this issue making it come into the
light and be addressed head on instead of ignored. As more women start to work they
feel that they should be payed the same amount at men. This fight for equal pay has
now become a huge social issue.

Illegal immigration has been another big issue. This can create big probems when it
comes to free health care and unfair labor. It has caused strikes, protests, possible
building of walls, controversy, and other acts of rebel. People feel that it is unfair that
they have to pay taxes to work and that others dont. If left unchecked, this can grow
into an overwhelming problem that can soon present itself.
6. Social Welfare:
United States of America -United states federal and state welfare
programs include cash assistance,
healthcare, and medical provisions, food
assistance, housing subsidies, energy and
utilities, education and child care assistance
for other basic services
-Health care spending generally targets
elderly and low income persons other classes
rely on employment assured healthcare

Canada -Income support: seniors benefits,

unemployment insurance, tax credits,
employment, labor programming, education,
health, social housing, social services,
-Free health care for the every citizen
increases social welfare and decreases the
spreading of disease and any other bad
conditions

IV. Sociocultural Information
1. Cultural Analysis
Family- The average family size in the US is 2.53 people, in Canada it is 3.7 people. The typical role of
men and women in America and Canada is to provide and take of the family and the children are taken
care of and educated for adulthood. Family is important in the region.

Language- The most commonly spoken languages in the North American region is English, Spanish and
French. 61.8 million americans speak English. English and French are most popular in Canada. Creole is
also spoken in some of the islands in the Caribbean.

Migration- 15,000 years ago, people from Asia crossed the Bering strait to get to the Americas. Then the
Europeans migrated from Europe to find resources, to escape discrimination or to dominate the world.
African Americans didnt really migrate, but were brought to North America to be slaves. Nowadays,
people migrate to the Americas for a better life.

Transportation- In North America many people get around by personal cars or public busses. However
in some areas, people may bike or just walk everywhere because things are in close proximity. Recently,
people have started using driving services, like Uber to get around.

Beliefs- The most common religion in North America is Christianity. 77.4 % of North America is
dominated by Christianity. Other common religions in North America include Judaism, Islam and Non
Religious. Common values are freedom, connection to land and family.

Food- Common dishes in America include American dishes like burgers, wings, apple pie and southern
comfort foods. We also see many Americanized takes on international dishes. In Canada some popular
dishes include maple syrup, Poutine and Tourtiere.

Traditions- Since Christianity dominates most of North America, popular traditions include Christmas,
Easter and attending church.Others include weddings, funerals, graduations and baby showers. In
America some traditions include fireworks on the 4th of July, Black Friday, Halloween and events for
football. In Canada some traditions include Thanksgiving and Canada day.

Art and Recreation- In Canada and America pop and R&B music, watching movies in theatres, and
sports are common. In America football is the most popular sport while in Canada the most popular are
hockey and soccer. In the region of North America, TV is a common past time.

3. Social Issues
Gentrification in Minority Communities
Gentrification is when run down areas are renovated to appeal to more people so these
areas can accommodate more people. However this is becoming a problem in minority
communities and lower income residents. These people moved into these areas
because it's all they could afford, so when these areas and cities, like Boston, Chicago
and Atlanta are renovated the property value goes up. This is good for the economy and
people with the money to afford the higher end living but the people the lower class
people and minority groups who can no longer afford the property tax are forced out and
have to move to other places. For example, in Atlanta, if this trend continues the black
population could drop to less than half of the population because they are affected by it.
Racial Profiling in Minority Communities

Racial profiling is when someone is negatively judged by their race. This Is a very
relevant and important topic due to the police violence on black americans and recent
terrorist attacks in the region. Racial profiling is mainly caused by stereotypes in
America. For example, Trayvon Martin was a 17 year old African American teenager
who was racially profiled by a neighborhood watch patroler for wearing a hoodie and
walking to his house at night. The effects of racial profiling cause discrimination on
minorities like african americans and muslims. One effect is the Black Lives Matter
movement. This is a movement to stand up and speak out against police brutality, most
commonly caused by racial profiling and discrimination.
