4 Types:

Cinder Cone Volcanoes -

Simplest type of volcano, particles and blobs of lava erupt out violently, falling around
the vent. This build up a circular or oval-shaped cone with a bowl-shaped crater. These rarely
reach heights above 1,000 feet.

Example - Parcutin in Mexico

Composite (stratovolcanoes) Volcanoes -

Make up many of Earths memorable volcanoes. Have a conduit system that channels
magma from deep in the Earth. These volcanoes can have clusters of vents, with lava breaking
through walls or fissures on the side of the mountain. This lava can form a mountain that is
thousands of meters tall. Composite volcanoes can erupt violently.
Example - Eyjafjallajkull in Iceland

Shield Volcanoes -

Large volcanoes that are shield-shaped when viewed from above. The lava is thin and
can travel for long distances. This slowly builds the mountain with many eruptions. Shield
volcanoes are not likely to catastrophically erupt.

Lava Domes -

Small masses of viscous lava pile up over the vent. Expansion of lava grows the
mountain. Lava domes can explode violently releasing a large amount of ash and hot rock.

Type of Volcano -

Haleakal is a shield volcano. The thin lava spread out, forming 75% of the island of
Maui, the other 25% by a volcano called Mauna Kahalawai in the North-Western part of the
island. The tallest peak is Red Hill at 3,055m. This volcano is located in a hot spot. The hot spot
formed the Hawaiian islands as the plate drifted over.
