Introduction (Introduccin)
Saber comunicarte en ingls te dar la oportunidad de acercarte a otros mundos y a otras
personas, no lo crees? Sin embargo, es necesario aprender el manejo de la lengua poco a poco.
Ya sabes cmo iniciar una conversacin dando informacin general de tu persona, aunque es
necesario ampliar tu vocabulario y conocer un mayor nmero de palabras. Has pensado cmo
podras referirte a distintos objetos bsicos y lugares sin saber nombrarlos?

El propsito de la Unidad II. Where is my book? es que describas de manera detallada objetos
personajes en sus dimensiones y formas, adems de localizarlos dentro de tu habitacin o casa,
por ejemplo, en un contexto donde la familia se muda de una casa a otra. Utilizars las nociones
gramaticales y el vocabulario propuesto en esta unidad asumiendo una actitud autnoma y
perseverante, as como disciplinada y responsable en su proceso de aprendizaje para:

Presentar y describir objetos personales.

Localizar sus pertenecas objetos personales.

En esta unidad continuars abordando las estructuras gramaticales y el vocabulario de la unidad

anterior. Adems, aprenders nuevas estructuras gramaticales, como:

Possessive pronouns (pronombres posesivos)

Demonstrative adjectives (adjetivos demostrativos)
Prepositions of place (preposiciones de lugar)

1. I Locating personal items (Ubicar objetos personales)

Al ubicar objetos personales, es importante indicar la cercana o lejana de stos. Para ello se utilizan los
adjetivos demostrativos (demonstrative adjectives), como se ejemplifica en la siguiente tabla:

Demonstrative adjetives
This, that, these and those are considered demonstrative adjectives and they are often used
with the location words "here" and "there".
Use Singular Plural
here (aqu) near (cerca) this (este, esta) these (estos, estas)
those (aquellos, aquellas,
there (all), far (lejos) that (aquel, aquella, eso, esa)
esos, esas)

Ejemplos

That is a book. This is a pencil case.

That se refiere a eso, se usa

Pon especial atencin a la diferencia en la pronunciacin entre this (i corta y cerrada) y these
(i larga y abierta).

Vuelve a leer los ejemplos de los demonstrative adjectives y pon atencin a las palabras
remarcadas en verde, stas son possessive adjectives (adjetivos posesivos). Con ellos podrs
expresar ideas como es mo o son tuyos y as evitar extravos y confusiones.

Importante

No confundas its e its:

Its es la contraccin que se forma de it + is.

Its denomina posesin.

Por ejemplo:
The dog has its ball. (El perro tiene su pelota).
What color is the table? Its green. (De qu color es la mesa? Es verde).

Recuerda que los pronombres personales toman el lugar del sujeto: Subject pronouns

He is Juan. (l es Juan)
El adjetivo posesivo indica de quin es el objeto: Possessive adjectives

His cellphone is black. (Su celular es negro)

El pronombre posesivo indica el significado de los anteriores, es decir, de quin es y qu es:
Possessive pronouns.

The cellphone is his. (El celular es suyo)

Ejemplos

Sally has a car. Sally is the owner of the car. (Sally es duea del auto)
That is her car. The possessive adjective "her" is modifying the noun "car".
(El adjetivo posesivo her modifica al sustantivo "auto")

Possessive adjective + noun

(her) (car)

The yellow car is hers. The possessive pronoun "hers" is replacing the
noun "Sally". (El pronombre posesivo hers remplaza al sustantivo "Sally")

Possessive adjective + noun

(hers) (Sally's)

Nota

En ingls, ni los adjetivos ni los pronombres tienen singular ni plural; es decir, no

importa cuntos poseas, se usa la misma palabra. Si yo tengo un gato o varios, ni el
pronombre ni el adjetivo posesivo cambia.

I have a cat. / I have two cats.

It is my cat. / They are my cats.
The cat is mine. / The cats are mine.

Tampoco importa si lo que se posee es femenino o masculino:

My mother (femenino y singular)

My brother (masculino y singular)
The dogs are mine (plural e indefinido,
podran ser hembras o machos)

Para localizar tus objetos personales tambin es muy importante poder decir dnde estn con
referencia a otros objetos, por ejemplo, es comn decir, trae mis llaves que estn junto al florero
rojo que est sobre la mesa o dejaste tu corbata encima de la mesa de noche de la recmara de
Juan. Para ello se usan las preposiciones de lugar (prepositions of place). Observa la siguiente tabla:

At Where is David?
(en, se ocupa para hablar de lugares) David is at the bank.

Next to Where is the notebook?

(junto a) It is next to the computer.

(debajo de) It is under the computer

In front of Where is the backpack?

(delante de) She is in front of the table.

Near Where is the briefcase?

(cerca de) It is near the wallet.

Nota

Where es la palabra que nos permite preguntar la ubicacin de alguien o algo.

Por eso se relaciona con preposiciones de lugar.

Lee el siguiente dilogo en donde se usa el vocabulario y la gramtica de las unidades 1 y 2 para
ubicar objetos. Trata de imaginar dnde estn los objetos en la casa de David.

Ana: Where is your red shirt?

David: My red shirt is in my closet under my green socks.
Ana: Ok, yes, I see it. And your books, where are they?
David: My books are in my bag.
Ana: And where is your bag?
David: My bag is on the chair next to the table.
Ana: No, its not.
David: Yes, the chair is at the dining room. My bag is old and brown.
Ana: Ah, at the dining room! These?
David: No, those are not mine, mine are blue.
Ana: Ok, I have them. And where are your shoes?
David: My shoes are under my bed.
