Today class is December 1st (the first day of the Christmas month) and we have a
special visitor Did anyone see who it is? The elf on the shelf. He is Santas helper
and reports back to Santa if your naughty or nice. At night, he flies back to Santa
to report what he saw. In the morning he will be in a new spot.
- Read the book or find a read aloud video on YouTube
- We have to come up with a name for our elf. I will take suggestions from

people who have been sitting and listening. Once we have a couple names we
will take a vote as a class by raising our hand when I say the name you like
most of all. Remember boys and girls that the elf is listening and doesnt want
to see fighting if you dont get your way.
- What is the one rule with elf on the shelf? You cannot touch him, or he will
lose his magic and he cant fly back to report back to Santa.
- He cant talk because Santas rules, but he listens and tells Santa your wishes
Body Explaining the Elf Adventure Book -
(Activity #1) - Teacher Actions
oEveryday, we will be writing in our elf adventure book about our friend Snowy
and where we find him in the morning and what he is doing. I have heard that
elves are known to get into trouble from time to time. So, it will be exciting to
see every morning what he got up to.
oWhen I hand out the booklets you are going to print your name on the front
page where it says by:
oAs a class we will fill out the front page together. The first box is where you
draw a picture of our classroom elf then in this box we circle if our elf is a boy
or a girl and we copy down our elfs name in this box.
oOn the following page we are going to be writing a one under day because it is
the first day we have our elf and we will copy the date off the board.
oAs a class we will come up with sentences about what our elf was doing, where
he was found and maybe why he was doing it. Once our sentences are copied
off the board you can draw a picture of what the elf looks in the morning.
- Transition Details
o Hand out the worksheet book and make sure everyone writes their name on
the front.
Filling in the workbook
-Teacher Actions
o Students will start by drawing and colouring a picture of our classroom elf, then
circling if it is a boy or a girl and copying the elfs name off the board.
o Once the majority of the class is done, get all eyes on me and park your
pencils.
o Explain that under day we are going to put the number one because it is our
first day with the elf and we will write the date on the line next to it.
Body o As a class we need to come up with a couple sentences to write about what
(Activity #2) the elf was doing and where he was doing it.
o Guide the students to have descriptive sentences
o Tell the students to copy down the sentences while remembering that
sentences start with a capital letter and end with a period. Remember to space
out your words when you are writing.
o Students may start copying the sentences and once they are finished, they are
allowed to draw and colour a picture of the elf.

Reflection
This is an exciting writing activity for the students. They come in everyday excited
to see what our elf snowy is doing. The directions I gave were very clear and
understandable. The students were excited to have a classroom elf. I think, I could
have incorporated some kindness notes or personalized letters for the class to
make it seem more real. As the students became more familiar with the activity it
became part of the morning routine and they start it once they sit down without
the need of instructions. We did it every morning and it was great practice for
writing.
