Experiment No:10

Concentric tube Heat

Exchanger Operating
under counter flow
conditions.
Objective:
To demonstrate the working principle of concentric tube heat exchanger
operating under Counter flow conditions.

Apparatus:
Concentric tube Heat Exchanger Apparatus

Principle:
Counter flow heat exchanger is based on transfer heat of between a solid object
and a fluid, or between two or more fluids by flow in opposite direction of both
fluids. The fluids may be separated by a solid wall to prevent mixing or they may be
in direct contact.

Procedure:
First of all we are going to put the apparatus ready for experiment and turn
the heater on when the flow of water has been established.
We are going to check valves that the flow of both the cold and hot water
should be in the counter direction.

We are also going to check air vent valves to release any entrapped air.
Now we will give both water flows a particular flow rate and it must be kept
I mind that he flow of hot water should be lower than the flow of cold water
for efficient heating.
Now during the flow first we will wait for few minutes so that the
thermometers attached gets to a uniform values.

1
After waiting few minutes then we will note the temperatures of both hot
and cold waters.
Measuring of these hot and cold flow of water is done by six thermometers
that are attached at different locations along the pipe.
Now first of all temperature is measured at the inlet the inlet for both water
flows then it is measured at the mid of the of the flow after that it is
measured at the outlet of the pipes.
Now we done requisite calculations.

Comments:
There are number of things that are of concern In heat transfer experiments
some are related to the faulty Apparatus that is being in use and some due
to uncertainty and some due to unknown reasons so in real it is not possible
to get accurate values.
Due to the reason that apparatus was old it is possibility that it was not giving
precise readings.
Heat losses is one of the other basic reasons causing vague results.
One thing that we noted was that the thermometer were not working as they
should have and were not accurate enough for the experiment. There could
be a reason so as to why the thermometers were not working correctly.
Personal error while taking the reading is the other reasons for deviation
from actual results.
One of the panel was not working properly because of its fault we were not
able to identify how much hot water we are actually supplying to the pipe.
Usually it takes some time to establish the water temperature though it is
cold or hot but we took values without any wait group after group so it is
other reason for experimental errors.
