Teacher Training Lesson Plan

Lesson Plan Objective:


At the end of the class the students will be able to:
Apply the simple past verbs (regular and irregular) in sentences by solving an activity.
Memorize irregular verbs by articulating some dialogues.

Topic of my Presentation
The topic of the presentation is the Simple Past Tense (regular and irregular verb).

Possible Problems & Solutions

Students might forget the past simple structures. I will write on the board the structures: affirmative, negative
and interrogative forms.
The projector may not work properly. The book will be used.
The activities may not be enough to cover the entire class. If the activities are not enough to cover the time, the student
can participate in a role play. The student will have to guess
what a student did on his or her weekend.

Material
For the presentation, I will employ a projector and a laptop. I will make use of printed activities. The board will be used as a
medium to convey vocabulary and grammatical structures.

Class profile
There are 10 students taking the course. The students are teenagers: 6 boys and 5 girls. Because there are few students, we
can arrange the chairs in a U shape. This arrangement will help to improve the climate of the class because some of the
students -especially the boy- are easily distracted. Generally, all the students have a deep wish to learn the language,
however, once in a while because of the furor of some activities, they tend to speak the first language. Therefore, the teacher
has to keep an eye on the students while doing any activity.

There are three students, all girls, who tend to take part a lot in the discussion and are prone to answer any questions made
by the professor. This behavior could be a problem if it is not well controlled by the professor.

Four students, in particular, are very shy: one girl and 3 boys. Therefore, the teacher should encourage these four students to
speak the language.

Because two students sometimes get easily distracted, this behavior can be dealt with by asking them once in a while.

One student in particular likes to ask questions about her favorite subject. So it is a good idea for the teacher to learn some
vocabulary about biology.

The class begins at 10 am, and it is 55 minutes long. This great schedule gives the opportunity to the teacher to apply as
many techniques or activities as he wants in order to challenge the students.

Warm up activity:
To capture and hold my audience's attention, I will narrate a story about the Second World War. Then, the students will be
asked about the importance of history. This activity will let the student use the language.

Context:
I will lead into my presentation by establishing the objective and the topic of the class. Charts (for the grammatical
structures) and some visual (for the verbs) will be used in order to establish the context.

How would I active Previous Knowledge (Schemata)?


Because they already know the present continuous and simple present, the students just have to integrate the past tense
structure. Therefore, in order to elicit previous knowledge, the student will mention some of the verbs that they already
know, and then those verbs will be changed into the past tense.
Presentation:
In order to teach the grammatical structure of the simple past, I will use a deductive method. First, taking into account just
regular verbs, I will project on the board some sentences using the grammatical structure (noun-pronoun + verb in simple
past + complement). In this first stage, I will teach: how to change the verb into the past tense by adding the ending -ed, and
how to form the negative and interrogative structure. Then, I will show them some examples and activities that the students,
as a group, can answer during the presentation.

Second, I am going to proceed to explain the irregular verbs. In this second stage, the students will familiarize with the
verbs -regular and irregulars- by listening to an audiotape. In a similar way, I will project some examples and mini-activities
that they can solve.

Practice Activities:
In the first practice, while working in pairs, the students will have to answer a paper sheet. The activity has around 30
questions. The activity is designed not only to distinguish between regular and irregular verbs but also to use the negative
and interrogative structures. This activity mainly encourages the students to apply their new knowledge in an activity.

In the second activity, working in pairs, the student will have to articulate some dialogues which can be found on page 141
of the book. This activity will help the students to recall the verbs while articulating the dialogues.

Wake up Activity:
A way to change the climate of the class is that the students mimic the actions of some irregular verbs. This verbs will be
projected on the board.

Production:
In this stage, having read a passage, the students will have to answer some question. This activity will be done individually.

Wrap up Activity:
Before the students go, they will have to answer some exercises: error recognition. The exercises will be projected on the
board.
