READINESS OF SENIOR HIGH STUDENTS IN K TO 12

PROGRAM 1

CHAPTER I

Introduction

The Philippine Education system has evolved October 5, 2010 as former President Benigno

Noynoy S. Aquino III declared the K to 12 Curriculum. This was implemented in the year 2011.

The new K to 12 Curriculum requires all Filipino students to have additional year in thr

education system; one year in kindergarten, six years of elementary schooling (Grade 1-6), four

years of junior high school (Grade 7 to 10) and the added two years for the senior high school

(Grade 11-12).

The Department of Education (DepEd) and its allied stakeholders have developed this new

curriculum in order to respond to the urgent and critical need to improve the quality of basic

education. The reform includes decongesting and enhancing the basic education curriculum for

learners to master basic competencies (E.P Valenzuela, 2010).

Expanding the basic education by adding kindergarten and two years in high school ensures

that graduates earn necessary skills and reach the employable age to qualify entrance into the world

of work, if they desire or need to do so.

Senior High School, the additional two years in the secondary level has four different

strands of choice based on aptitude, interests, and school capacity Academic Track, Technical-

Vocational Track, Sports Track and Arts and Design Track. Academic track is further divided into

four strands General Academic Strand (GAS); Accountancy Business and Management (ABM);

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM); and Humanities and Social Sciences

(HUMSS). Strands for Grade 11 and 12 are offered differently in every public and private schools,

even universities nationwide.

Senior High School follows a college orientation, having two semesters every year. Each

semester has different sets of subjects depending on their desired track and strand. Subjects are

being categorized into three the core subjects, the contextualized subjects and the applied

subjects. Core subjects have seven learning areas: Languages, Literature, Communication,

Mathematics, Philosophy, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. Core subjects are present in all

senior high school tracks and strand. Specialized subjects, offers different content and different

competencies, depending on the track student takes. Contextualized subjects have the content

different from different tracks and strands. Each subjects take 80 hours per semester (except for

Physical Education and Health).

Senior High School completes basic education by making sure that the high school

graduate is equipped for work, entrepreneurship, or higher education. This is a step-up from a 10-

year cycle where high school graduates still need further education not to mention expenses - to

be ready for the world.

Among thousands of schools offering additional two years for the secondary,

Nancalobasaan National High School (NNHS) is one of the chosen schools to implement the said

program offering General Academic Strand (GAS).

February 2015, the offer has already been announced to the students of NNHS by Mrs.

Maritess C. Estrada, former principal. And during the term of Mrs. Hilda E. Lumague, a two-storey

building was constructed from June 2016 and ended February 2017.

For the School Year 2016-2017, Senior High School was formally launched. Thirty-two

(32) students were enrolled as Grade 11 on the said school year called pioneers of the new

curriculum. Fifteen of which are boys and seventeen are girls.

Ms. Mari Jane C. Andaya was the adviser of the Grade 11 and at the same time, the Senior

High School coordinator. Ms. Andaya came from Urdaneta City University, teaching different

subjects for different courses. Until she decided to apply to be a senior high school teacher in

DepEd and was assigned in NNHS.

Along with Ms. Andaya was Ms. Brendalene C. Sampayan who became a subject teacher

of the senior high school. Ms. Brendalene was a former elementary teacher in Bactad East

Elementary School for several years and Major in Mathematics until she applied for the position

of SHS teacher in NNHS.

For the School Year 2017 2018, population of SHS students has raised to seventy-three

(73). Forty-one students were enrolled as Grade 11 while the 32 students were promoted to Grade

12.

June 7, 2017, another teacher was been added to the SHS department - Ms. Sarah Jean U.

Berbon. She was a former secondary teacher from Divine Grace Montessori and High School

Tayug. She is currently the adviser of Grade 12 (GAS) Diamond.

SHS students perform well in their classes in every activities during their class. They also

have active participation in class discussions even in hands on tasks and experiments. On the other

hand, there are still lapses in terms on the facilities of the school needed for the future learners of

Grade 11 and 12, such as Science Laboratories and Computer Rooms. With this gaps, senior high

school students are still ready and eager to learn.

The study focuses on the students enrolled as SHS in NNHS -Grade 11 (GAS) Emerald

and Grade 12 (GAS) Diamond of Nancalobasaan National High School on how did the K to 12

Curriculum helped them in different aspects particularly the additional two years of secondary

level the Senior High School.

Significance of the Study

The generalization of this present study would be a great contribution to the vast knowledge

in relation to students awareness. Vital results of this investigation could be highly significant and

beneficial specifically to the following:

considered the second main concern in the educational system next to the primary pupils which

are the pupils from Grade I to Grade VI. In this study, the findings of this research will inspire,

enlightened and become beneficial to the students of Nancalobasaan National High School.

Teachers. This refers to professional teacher who took the four year course program of Bachelor

of Science in Secondary and Elementary Education. In this study, they are the instruments in the

materialization of the government educational programs. Through the implementation of K 12

programs many schools will be hiring more teachers to cater the pupils needs in order to meet the

benefits

School Administrators will gain insights as to what measures are appropriate to help the teachers
