Energy Flow GoogleTrek

TEKS: 7.5Matter and energy. The student knows that interactions occur between matter and energy. The
student is expected to: (c) diagram the flow of energy through living systems, including food chains, food webs,
and energy pyramids.

The GoogleTrek is a self-paced unit where students will learn the vocabulary used for different organisms and
explore how the organisms relate to one another in an ecosystem. The following table lays out how the unit
progresses and student options. Below the table is the student copy of notes and a condensed form of the table.

Introduction
(REQUIRED)
Pre-Test Students will take a pre- If student received a 95:

with multiple organisms.
Students label the
organisms with the given
vocabulary words and
define the vocabulary
word. This is completed
using Google Drawing.
Frayer Models Students create a frayer 25 points
model for each of the
given vocabulary words.
This is completed using
Google Slides.
Level 2

Food Chain and Web Students read about the 25 points
Guided Reading relationships in food
chains and webs and
answer questions in their
notebook.
Build a Food Chain After reading about the 25 points
organisms that live in a
specific ecosystem,
students write down one
food chain that exists in
their notebook.

students create a food
web for the entire
ecosystem and answer
questions. This is a

in.
Build a Food Web 2 Students work through a 50 points
digital food web activity
through PBS Learning.
Students write the food
web down and answer
questions. This is a

in.
Level 3

answer questions about
the food web when
animals die or threats to
the ecosystem are
presented. This is a

Scenario reading 1 Students watch a video 100 points
and read an article about
how warmer oceans are
affecting aquatic
ecosystems. Students
then answer questions
about the article and
make predictions on how
the food web may change.
This is a Google Form.
Scenario reading 2 Students watch a video 100 points
and read an article about
how vultures are dying
due to drugs given to
cattle. Students answer
questions about the
article and make
predictions on how the
food web may change.

Level 4
350 points
Endangered Species Students read an article about how the current
Act Article government is considering disbanding the
(Required) endangered species act.
Take your stance Students make a presentation either for or against
(Required) the endangered species act. If for, the student must
pick an animal found in Texas on the endangered
species list and create a presentation on behalf of the
animal. If against, the student must create a
presentation representing a group of people who
may be against.
The Flow of Energy
_______________________________ is the main energy source for life on Earth.

Producers and Consumers

Organisms that capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use that
energy to produce food are called ______________________. They are also known
as ______________________ and usually go through _________________________________.

Examples: ________________________________________________________________

Organisms that rely on other organisms for their energy and food supply
are called ______________________________. They are also called ____________________.

Examples: ________________________________________________________________

Types of Consumers
_________________________, like ________________________________, eat plants.

_________________________, like _______________________________, eat other animals.

_________________________, like____________________, eat both plants and animals.

_________________________, like _________________________________, feed on plant and

animal remains and other dead matter.

_________________________, like _________________________________, break down

organic matter and return nutrients to the environment.
