Selection Process: Poetry is a common method of telling a story.

Luckily, I was asked to write a

Shakespearian Sonnet in ninth grade, which I can compare with my Senior free verse poem (the
only other poem I wrote).

Growth: Given that I did not learn the purpose of a sonnet in freshman year, I will let it slide
that my sonnet is neither about love or conflicting ideas. Nonetheless, the word choice is
immature (e.g. very fine, stuff, and soft) and poetic elements beyond the occasional simile
are non-existent. Thus, my experience at Costco is weakly conveyed.
In my senior year, I wrote a free verse poem. After learning poetic devices, I was able to
effectively relay the process of writing a poem through the use of enjambment (minute by
section), alliteration (intellectual, inspirational, ), onomatopoeias (lubdub), and similes
(like that of a/great whale?). Furthermore, I took advantage of the flexibility of poetry and
purposefully broke the rules of English (e.g. there is no capitalizations). Unlike my freshman
poem, my senior poem effectively narrates the process of a poem.

Concluding Statement: Through the poetry unit of AP Literature, I am now able to understand
and utilize poetic devices to tell a story.
