Vernacular Architecture and Research on the

Architecture of Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan

Abstract

The paper attempts to reconsider the possibilities of the research on Taiwanese

indigenous peoples buildings by reviewing contemporary research on vernacular

architecture. The sphere of vernacular architecture contains traditional architecture in both

the West and the East; it refers to the past and also contemporary interpretations of the past;

it concentrates on ritual, and also everyday life. Vernacular architecture can be regarded as

the representation of cosmology of a race, and the representation of material. It is a process

of production, a system of cultural know-how and also the architecture of the other. It is

a review of the past, but also the research on the present. Therefore, I would suggest that,

by reviewing vernacular architecture, we are able to discover further possibility and

diversity to reconsider the research on Taiwanese indigenous peoples architecture under

such rapidly changing social environment.
