Learning Objectives:
On completion of this seminar you will have a better understanding of the following:
1. Definition and presentation and prevalence of COPD
2. The risk factors for COPD
3. The diagnosis of COPD
4. The management of stable COPD
5. The management of COPD exacerbations
6. Patient counselling of common COPD medicines
How the seminar will run:
To prepare for the seminar you have been provided with a list of suggested resources which you
should be familiar with prior to the seminar.
You should bring these materials to the seminar (electronic or hard copy). You may use
laptops/tablets to access the resources during the seminar.
Activities 1 and 2 (pre‐seminar task) should be completed prior to the session. At the beginning of
the seminar these activities will be discussed as a group. They have been designed to ensure that
you have some background understanding of the topic before attempting the rest of the activities.
For the remainder of the activities you will work in small groups of 3 or 4 to complete the tasks using
the recommended resources. At the end of each activity your tutor will discuss the answers with the
class.
At the end of the seminar you have been provided with some additional reading that should be done
in your own time.

You are running a newly commissioned COPD screening service in your community pharmacy.
Mr Cash is a 60 year old retired shipbuilder; he visits your pharmacy to buy some cough medicine for
a persistent chesty cough. You invite him to attend your COPD screening clinic and discuss his
symptoms in more detail.
