NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during

performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop

Products Guide", for tools and supplies to collect and contain fluids in
Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil
or components to contact skin. Be sure that the engine and components
are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any
service work.

1. Drain the transmission and torque converter into a suitable container for storage or disposal.

2. Attach a suitable lifting sling and hoist to the input drive shaft. Remove eight bolts (1). Remove
input drive shaft (2). The weight of the drive shaft is 35 kg (65 lb).

3. Disconnect hydraulic hose assemblies (3) and (4).

4. Disconnect three hydraulic hose assemblies (5). One line is from the power train priority valve, one
is from the torque converter outlet relief valve and one is the return hose located on the bottom of
torque converter. Disconnect two electrical connectors (6).

5. Disconnect two hydraulic hose assemblies (7) from the transmission oil pump.

6. Fasten Tooling (A) and a hoist to secure torque converter (9). Remove 23 bolts (8) and the washers.
If necessary, use M12 x 1.75 mm forcing screws to separate the torque converter from the flywheel
housing. Move the torque converter back approximately 152.4 mm (6 in) before lifting upward. The
weight of the torque converter is 363 kg (800 lb).

7. Remove the O-ring seal from the torque converter housing assembly.

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the torque converter.

8. Check the condition of all O-ring seals used in the installation of the torque converter and related
hose assemblies. If any of the seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement.

9. Be sure that the mating surface of the engine flywheel housing and the torque converter housing
assembly are thoroughly clean and free of dirt and debris prior to installation.

10. Install the torque converter in the reverse order of removal.

11. During installation, tighten the eight bolts that hold the input drive shaft in position to a torque of
130 ± 15 N·m (95 ± 11 lb ft).

12. Fill the transmission and torque converter with oil to the correct level. See the Operation &
Maintenance Manual for the correct fluid and filling procedure.
