Millbrae parking lot eyed for mixed-use project offering medical offices, homes

under a recent Planning Commission
decision, despite concerns of some
neighbors.
The Millbrae Planning Commission
unanimously recommended Monday,
Dec. 18, the City Council approve
rebuilding the parking lot at 480 El
Camino Real into a four-story project
with eight residential units over office
space.
The project is slated to move on to
the City Council for final approval,
perhaps to the chagrin of some resi-
dents who fear it may invite a crush of
traffic congestion to the city’s central
thoroughfare.
“Their concerns are parking first and
foremost, and the height of the struc-
ture itself,” said Arthur Cruz, whose
friends live adjacent to the property
also once home to the former Daland
Nissan auto dealership.
The issues raised by Cruz were also
expressed during community meetings
held by the developer, according to
city documents detailing the building
approval process.
“Residents who attended the meeting
were concerned with parking and
potential traffic impacts,” according
to the report.
Those fears though were remedied by
the opportunity to redevelop a current-
ly vacant site, according to the report.

Brewing Company, it’s almost as
if every inch the brewery claims at
821 Cherry Lane has been careful-
ly planned out.
That may be because for the last
two years, owner Alex Porter has
been spending almost all his
weekends and countless hours dur-
ing the week shaping the suite he
shares with Redwood Coast Cider
said he has worked alongside
plumbers and electricians along
with plenty of hours on his own
procuring, connecting and, at
times, creating the equipment
needed to produce the seven differ-
ent beers he serves at the same
space on Thursday, Friday and
Saturday afternoons.
“This is basically an overgrown
home brew situation,” he said.
Though he won awards for his
Belgian beers as a home brewer,
Porter said making the transition
to operating a brewery some two
together his friends’ skills as con-
tractors, advice from other beer
brewers and years of experience
working at Bay Area biosciences
companies, Porter said he’s been
able to creatively engineer several
steps of the brewing process to
stay within a shoestring budget.

crimes is being reported. The

was hard hit this week after eight
people had their cars broken into
during a string of burglaries around
8:30 p.m. Dec. 19, according to
San Mateo police. Now, law
enforcement is imploring the pub-
lic to protect themselves and
avoid becoming a victim.

Insurance firms dispatching
private firefighters in state

LOS ANGELES — Among the army
of firefighters protecting neighbor-
hoods at the front lines of Southern
California’s monstrous wildfire are
small teams hired by insurance compa-
nies to provide personalized preven-
tion and protection for homeowners.
Firms including American
International, Pure Insurance and
Chubb Limited have provided the serv-
ice for policies for homeowners in
wildfire-prone states for about a
decade. Chubb contracts with licensed
wildfire defense teams across 13
states, with the majority in California,
where the fire season lasts all year and
land people on the Moon!

homes in the fall.
The trucks these private firefighters
drive to policyholders’ properties are
indistinguishable from those used by
public fire agencies and they carry
much of the same equipment, including
water tanks, hoses and flame retarding
gels.
Chubb has dispatched 11 trucks car-
rying two firefighters each to about
500 homes in Santa Barbara and
Ventura counties northwest of Los
Angeles where the Thomas fire has
destroyed more than 1,000 buildings
since Dec. 4. It’s a welcome service for
customers and smart business for an
insurance company since saving a
home is cheaper than paying out on a

policy to rebuild it.
In one case, the teams visited a sin-
gle home in the fire zone five times
over two weeks, according to Kevin
Fuhriman, Chubb’s “catastrophe man-
ager” who oversees the company’s
California fire response. Team mem-
bers removed dry brush, patio furniture
and anything else around the exterior
that could catch fire if embers blew
through. They also cleared the gutters
and taped up vents.
During subsequent visits, as flames
drew closer, sprinklers were installed
to keep the ground moist and the prop-
erty was treated with a hydrating gel.
Fuhriman said at one point the private
firefighters arrived to find fire on the
property and quickly put it out.

California population
grows by 300K, nearing 40 million
SACRAMENTO — California’s population is approaching
40 million after growing by nearly 300,000 people during
the year ending July 1, 2017, state officials reported Thursday
in their annual county-by-county population update.
That puts the state’s total population at 39.6 million, by far
the largest in the country.
California’s counties range in size from 10.3 million in Los
Angeles, which is larger than most states, to tiny Alpine with
just 1,141 people — nine fewer than a year ago.
Most of the population growth came from births, which
outpaced deaths by 220,000. More people moved out of
California than in from other U.S. states, but foreign immi-
gration made up the difference. Total net migration added
80,000 people, according to the report by the Department of
Finance.
Nine counties with more than 1 million people each com-
prise 70 percent of the state’s population. They include the
cities and suburbs of Los Angeles, San Diego and Sacramento
as well as Silicon Valley and the East Bay outside San
Francisco.
With 880,000 people, San Francisco is the state’s 12th
largest county.
California Supreme Court
rules against Novartis in drug suit
SAN FRANCISCO — The California Supreme Court has
ruled against pharmaceutical giant Novartis in a lawsuit over
a generic version of a drug the company once made.
The court said Thursday brand-name drug manufacturers can
be held liable for deficiencies in warning labels on generic
versions of their drugs. In a 4-3 decision, the justices said that
liability could also extend to cases in which the brand-name
drugmaker has sold the drug to another company and stopped
making it.
The ruling came in a lawsuit against Novartis by the chil-
dren of a woman who was prescribed a generic drug while preg-
nant. The children claim the drug caused them to suffer brain
injuries, and Novartis failed to warn their mom about those
dangers.

McConnell skeptical about
another run at health law

WASHINGTON — The top Senate
Republican is skeptical at best about revis-
iting the Senate’s botched efforts to dis-
mantle Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act
despite one GOP lawmaker’s insistence the
health care law will be scrapped.
In an interview Thursday with the
Associated Press, Majority Leader Mitch
McConnell pointed out that the GOP-con-
trolled Senate was “unable to go forward
with 52 Republican senators. Whether it’s
possible to go forward with 51 Republican
senators is an open question.” Republicans
have lost a seat with the election of
Alabama Democrat Doug Jones.
The six-term Kentucky lawmaker’s com-
ments came about the same time the gov-
ernment indicated the law remains viable.
About 8.8 million people signed up for
coverage next year as a deadline surge last
week appeared to account for the surpris-
ingly strong numbers. Just a day earlier,
President Donald Trump proclaimed that the
GOP tax bill “essentially repealed
Obamacare.” But the tax overhaul only
repealed the health law’s fines on people
who don’t carry health insurance, starting
in 2019.

is Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who vowed

Republican leadership - that in 2018 there
will not be another effort to repeal and
replace Obamacare — you are sadly mistak-
en,” Graham said. “By eliminating the indi-
vidual mandate in the tax bill we have pulled
one of the pillars of Obamacare out. But by
no means has Obamacare been repealed or
replaced.”
Graham added: “I look forward to working
with President Trump, our House and Senate
Republican leadership, and the private sec-
tor to make Repeal and Replace of
Obamacare a reality in 2018. It will be a dif-
ficult task but failure is not an option.”
In the AP interview, the pragmatic
McConnell didn’t share the ardor of House
Speaker Paul Ryan to take on federal benefit
programs like welfare and food stamps.
McConnell said that unless Democrats buy
in on cutting benefit programs “we’ll not be
doing entitlement reform.”
Asked whether he’s relieved that divisive
Alabama Republican Roy Moore won’t be
coming to the Senate even though his loss
in a special election cost the GOP a seat,
McConnell said, “I think you know the
answer to that.” McConnell opposed Moore
in the primary and called upon him to step
aside when allegations emerged that Moore,
in his 30s, had molested teenage girls four
decades ago.

Center for Public Affairs Research finds that
48 percent named health care as a top prob-
lem for the government to focus on in the
next year, up 17 points in the last two
years.
The poll allows Americans to name up to
five priorities and found a wide range of top
concerns, including taxes, immigration and
the environment. But aside from health
care, no single issue was named by more
than 31 percent.
And 7 in 10 of those who named health
care as a top problem said they had little to
no confidence that government can
improve matters. The public was less pes-
simistic in last year’s edition of the poll,
when just over half said they lacked confi-
dence in the problem-solving ability of
lawmakers and government institutions.

WASHINGTON — About 8.8 million peo-
ple have signed up for coverage next year
under the Affordable Care Act, the govern-
ment said Thursday. The surprisingly
strong numbers come after a deadline surge
last week.
The update came via Twitter from Seema
Verma, head of the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services. Total national sign-ups
won’t be known for weeks, as some states
with later deadlines continue to enroll cus-
tomers.
A detailed breakdown was not immediate-
ly available, but last year the 39 states
served by the federal HealthCare.gov web-
site enrolled 9.2 million people. The figure
this year had been expected to be much
lower, partly because President Donald

Bustamante said she voted for Trump, but
“he’s learning on the job, and he’s got a
long way to go.”
Trump initially promised his own plan
that would deliver “insurance for every-
body” and “great” health care, “much less
expensive and much better.” But the White
House never released a health care proposal
from the president.
GOP legislation to repeal and replace for-
mer President Barack Obama’s health care
law failed in Congress, although the tax
bill scraps the Obama requirement that most
people get health insurance. Bloodied on
both sides, Republicans and Democrats
seem to have battled to an uneasy draw on
health care.
Meanwhile, conflicting policy signals
from Washington, including an abrupt
White House decision to cancel insurer sub-
sidies, roiled insurance markets. Premiums
on health plans purchased by individuals
jumped by double digits. Progress reducing
the number of uninsured stalled, and one
major survey found an uptick this year.
Trump and the GOP-led Congress repeatedly
tried to take down the entire program.
“This number is higher than anyone
expected, and has to be considered a suc-
cess,” said Larry Levitt of the nonpartisan
Kaiser Family Foundation.
The numbers come a day after Trump pro-
claimed that the GOP tax bill “essentially
repealed Obamacare.” But the tax overhaul
only repealed the health law’s fines on peo-
ple who don’t carry health insurance, start-
ing in 2019.
Other major elements of the Obama-era
law remain in place, including its Medicaid
expansion tailored to low-income adults,
protections for people with pre-existing
medical conditions, subsidies to help con-
sumers pay their premiums, and require-
ments that insurers cover “essential” health
benefits.

according to prosecutors.
That motion was denied by Judge Jeffrey
Finigan, who also found sufficient evi-
dence to proceed with a Superior Court
arraignment Jan. 5, according to prosecu-
tors.  
Maciasmorales was taken into custody
after a dispute between two female students
at Pescadero High School earlier this
month uncovered allegations he had a one-
to two-year sexual relationship with one
student and kissed another in the last year.
His alleged actions date back to Aug. 1,
2016, with a 16-year-old student a 12-year-
old student while he was a part-time after-
school care employee at Pescadero Middle
and High School, according to prosecutors.
On Dec. 1, police were called to the high
school after a disagreement between the
two students unfolded. The 16-year-old told
authorities she and Maciasmorales were in
a sexual relationship lasting between one
and two years and the 12-year-old said he
kissed her and touched her butt in the
school gym Nov. 29, according to prosecu-
tors.

Area Air Quality Management District for
Friday, Dec. 22, through Christmas Eve.
Representatives from the district say that
dry, stagnant weather has created a high-
pressure system over the Bay Area and is
forecasted to trap smoke near the ground
and wood smoke is expected to build up in
the region.
Wood smoke is the major source of air
pollution in the Bay Area in the wintertime
and is especially harmful to children, the
elderly and people with respiratory condi-
tions, the district said.
These alerts ban the burning of wood,
manufactured logs or any other solid fuel.
This means wood burning both indoors and
outdoors is illegal during this multi-day
alert.
The only exception is for homes without
permanently installed heating where wood-
stoves or fireplaces are the only source of
heat. Open-hearth fireplaces are no longer
an exemption. Air levels will range from
moderate to unhealthy for sensitive groups
from today until Tuesday.

DA urges scam victims to apply
for refund with Western Union
Western Union has agreed to refund more
than a half-billion dollars to victims of
scams who were fraudulently duped into
sending money using a variety of scams
over a 13-year period, according to the
Santa Clara County District Attorney’s
Office.
A total of $586 million is available for
people who wired money using Western
Union to scam artists between Jan. 1,
2004, and Jan. 19, 2017.
There are a variety of different scams
involved, including fake tax collectors,
fake law enforcement officers, and fake
grandchildren in jail who claimed to be in
need of bail money.

activist remanded into
custody after judge raises bail
Right-wing activist Kyle Chapman, who
faces a felony charge of possession of a
leaded cane for allegedly brandishing a
leaded stick at a rally in Berkeley in March,
was remanded into custody Thursday after a
judge said he violated an order not to pos-
sess any weapons.
Chapman, a 41-year-old Daly City man,
had been free on $135,000 bail since short-
ly after charges were filed against him in
August but Alameda County Superior Court
Judge Yvonne Northridge increased it to
$400,000 Dec. 21.
Prosecutor Chris Cavagnaro said
Chapman’s possession of a Kubotan self-
defense key chain is “a clear, willing and
knowing violation” of another judge’s
order that he not possess any weapons as a
condition of his bail and asked that his bail
be increased to $500,000.
Chapman, who also goes by the name
“Based Stick Man,” said in a video that he
posted on his Facebook account earlier
Thursday that he had a Kubotan key chain,
which is about 5 inches long and is made of
a hard high-impact plastic and lined with
grooves, because he’s been attacked by
antifa activists.
Chapman alleged that the prosecution’s
request to increase his bail to $500,000 “is
purely politically-motivated” because he
said that amount is usually only set for mur-
der suspects.
He said his previous bail of $135,000
was “already astronomical” for what he
described as “a billy club charge.”

There were multiple instances of vio-
lence between the two groups and Chapman
was identified as one of the people causing
violence, Berkeley police Officer Darrin
Rafferty wrote in a probable cause state-
ment.
A man later identified as Chapman who
was wearing a black baseball helmet, gog-
gles and a backpack with metal buckles
sprayed what appeared to be pepper spray
into a crowd of protesters that Chapman’s
group had been arguing with, according to
Rafferty.
A short time later “Chapman was
involved in multiple altercations with
many people” and “was swinging what
appeared to be a wooden stick at many peo-
ple,” Rafferty wrote.
However, Rafferty wrote that it was
unclear if Chapman hit anyone because the
camera didn’t stay focused on him during
the altercation.
Rafferty said that after he reviewed videos
of the clash at the rally, “it is clear that
Chapman was in possession of a piece of
wood that had been fashioned and carried as
a weapon.”
Defense lawyer John Noonan said at
Chapman’s hearing Thursday, which was
guarded by eight Alameda County sheriff’s
deputies, that Chapman carried the self-
defense key chain because “he had to do
something to defend himself” after he was
attacked several times.
Northridge said, “It’s unfortunate his car
was broken into” but said she was con-
cerned because Chapman has made threat-
ening comments on his Facebook page,
although she didn’t disclose the specific
words Chapman used. Northridge said pos-
sessing the key chain “is what he’s not
supposed to be doing.”
Prosecutors say that Chapman has two
prior convictions, one for grand theft in
San Diego County in 2001 and one for rob-
bery in Texas in 1993. Chapman is sched-
uled to return to court on Jan. 3 for a pretri-
al hearing.

GOP set to move on from Russia in 2018; Democrats keep focus

Democrats are scrambling in the final days
of 2017 to establish an enduring narrative
on multiple Russia investigations and the
integrity of the investigators, a partisan
messaging battle that has intensified as
special counsel Robert Mueller has
appeared to focus more intently on
President Donald Trump and his inner circle.
Congressional Republicans who have put
up with almost a year’s worth of speculation
and investigations into Trump’s ties to
Russia are hoping to move on from that
topic in 2018, renewing focus on Democrat
Hillary Clinton and stepping up criticism
of Mueller. Democrats remain focused on
Trump and are pushing to keep congression-
al investigations on Russia going for
months to come.

Committee, made a speech Wednesday on
the Senate floor warning Trump not to take
any action relating to Mueller. He said
Thursday that he gave the speech because
the “tone and tenor” coming from the White
House and its allies “should send a chill
through all of us.”
Trump and White House officials have

defense budget to bolster ballistic missile
defense capability amid escalating threats

Under the plan endorsed Friday, Japan’s
2018 defense budget rises 1.3 percent from
the current year. It would be the sixth annu-
al increase under Abe, who ended a decade of
military budget cuts since taking office in
2012. The defense spending is part of
Japan’s 97.7 trillion ($860 billion) nation-
al budget for 2018, also the biggest.

BARCELONA, Spain — Catalonia’s seces-
sionist parties won enough votes Thursday to
regain a slim majority in the regional parlia-
ment and give new momentum to their polit-
ical struggle for independence from Spain.
It was hardly an emphatic victory, howev-
er, as the separatists lost support compared
to the previous vote in 2015, and a pro-unity
party for the first time became biggest single
bloc in the Catalan parliament.
The result left more questions than answers
about what’s next for Catalonia, where a
long-standing push for independence escalat-
ed to a full-on clash with the Spanish gov-
ernment two months ago.
It was also a blow to Spanish Prime
Minister Mariano Rajoy, who as a result of
the separatists’ defiance ousted the Catalan
Cabinet and called the early election hoping
to keep them out of power.
Instead, the election’s outcome favored
fugitive former Catalan leader Carles
Puigdemont, who campaigned from Belgium
where he is evading a Spanish judicial probe
into the attempt to split from Spain. The
investigation could lead to charges of rebel-
lion and sedition that carry penalties of
decades in prison. Puigdemont, who got the
most votes of any separatist candidate, greet-
ed the results with delight and called them a
rebuke to Spain’s central government.
“The Spanish state has been defeated,”
Puigdemont said. “Mariano Rajoy has
received a slap in the face from Catalonia.”
In a televised appearance from Brussels,
the 54 year-old former journalist didn’t make
clear if he would try to return home, where an
arrest warrant awaits him.
The other main winner was Ines Arrimadas,
the leading unionist candidate. Scoring 25
percent of the votes, her pro-business
Ciutadans (Citizens) party won 37 seats,
which will be the biggest single bloc in the
135-seat regional assembly.
“The pro-secession forces can never again
claim they speak for all of Catalonia,”
Arrimadas said, promising her party will
continue to oppose the separatists. “We are
going to keep fighting for a peaceful co-exis-
tence, common sense and for a Catalonia for
all Catalans.”

ur hearts go out to victims of
Monday’s horrifying Amtrak
derailment in DuPont and to their
families.
Perhaps one way to pay tribute to them is
by promptly addressing the factors in this
accident that could improve the safety of
rail travel.
Although the NTSB investigation is just
getting underway, some important ques-
tions must be answered by the public and
private operators of passenger trains in
Washington state and beyond.
Amtrak Cascades Train 501 was going 80
mph into a 30 mph curve when it derailed
Monday morning, strongly suggesting
operating errors. This makes it eerily simi-
lar to a 2015 Amtrak derailment in
Philadelphia that killed 8 and injured 200,
when a train entered a curve at more than
twice the speed limit.
Safety equipment that could have inter-
vened in both incidents — an automatic
braking system — was installed on
Cascades Train 501 but not yet operational.
Sound Transit, which owns the track seg-
ment and upgraded it with federal money
passed through the state Department of
Transportation, said the automatic braking
system, known as positive train control
(PTC), was scheduled to be operational in

Although California has the sixth
largest economy in the world, it is utterly
surprising to hear that the state is not
taking a greater action to launch an aca-
demic uprising.
With California school students having
a higher share of English learners and
low-income families, the need to fund dis-
tricts accordingly per pupil is something
that needs to be adapted soon. Hundreds
of school districts in California are cur-
rently not meeting educational standards,
which can give signal to California resi-
dents to realize the lack of federal sup-
port. The lives of students and educators
must no longer be ignored.
Along with the rise of population in the
Bay Area need, the demand for new
schools, teachers, counselors, supplies
and much more will soon create a growing
concern in the community. State funding
among educational programs must meet
the support every student needs to encour-
age further growth within communities
and the country. The problems that
California faces amongst its own budget
toward education is now being seen
reflected in low math and reading scores.

It’s beyond disappointing that PTC was-
n’t working before service began on this
segment. Multiple parties share blame on
this front.
Safety regulators have called for PTC
systems for decades, but Congress and the
U.S. railroad industry have been slow to
implement this lifesaving technology.
Congress finally mandated PTC in 2008,
after 25 people died in a California train
accident that same year. PTC was required
by the end of 2015. But after the rail indus-
try struggled to finish the work on time,
Congress relented and extended the dead-
line to December 2018.
Yes, PTC systems are expensive and
complicated, but the public pays a far
greater price when proven, effective safety
systems are delayed.
Gov. Jay Inslee should demand that PTC
systems be activated as soon as humanly
possible on all passenger trains in
Washington state. He has little authority
over BNSF and Amtrak but can apply pres-
sure and ensure that state and regional rail
operators expedite their contributions.
Then there is a design question: Does it
make sense to launch fast rail service on a
segment of track with an S-curve that
requires trains to slow from 79 mph to 30
know they have a chance for success to
keep their mindset growing of their end-
less career and academic opportunities.
Allowing students to fall behind stan-
dards for consecutive years will only
diminish the opportunities each individ-
ual deserves. The lives of students and
educators must no longer be ignored. In
the coming years, I can only hope to wit-
ness noticeable reform to strengthen the
opportunities students and teachers
receive in our state.

reassess the state’s entire rail system for
tricky segments that add risk and compli-
cate efforts to increase speeds and frequen-
cy of passenger trains, and then explain
how they will be mitigated.
Monday’s deadly accident also highlight-
ed the city of Lakewood’s earlier warnings
about safety on this new route at rail cross-
ings and the city’s difficulty getting the
state and Sound Transit to address its con-
cerns.
This should give pause to cities in
Greater Seattle being pressured by rail
advocates to expedite permitting of trains
through their communities.
As the investigation and grieving con-
tinues, policymakers need to show the pub-
lic that they’re doing everything possible
to improve the safety of passenger rail
service. Further delays are simply unac-
ceptable.
They must assure the public that safety is
paramount both in the design and opera-
tion of passenger-train service — includ-
ing current Amtrak and Sound Transit
trains, light rail in the Puget Sound region
and 200-mph passenger trains proposed
between Oregon and Canada.

agenda being pursued by a mere majority
on the U.S. Supreme Court which seeks to
strip the public of those fundamental
rights and privileges which make us
Americans. Justices in opposition have
attacked this reprehensible agenda as,
“inexplicable,” “fantastic,” “unquestion-
ably wrong” and “evil.” Yet none of this
penetrates our public consciousness.
Instead, we focus on kneeling at football
games. This is a strange kind of patriot-
ism.

Peace on Earth
“D
o as much good as you can, as
long as you can, any way that
you can, wherever you can,
for anyone you can, until you no longer
can.” — John Wesley.
Peace on Earth and good will toward
mankind is one of the most common
refrains during the holiday season. The
phrase comes from Luke 2:14 — a biblical
verse that reminds us that humanity should
always strive for a more peaceful existence
on Earth through selfless acts of love for
one another. One of our nation’s first and
most renowned Christmas carols, “I Heard
the Bells on Christmas Day,” also reflects
the sentiments
in this verse.
While many
know the
Christmas carol,
few know the
courageous story
behind its
lyrics. The son-
net originates
from a poem
written by
world-renowned
American poet
Henry Jonathan Madison
Longfellow in
1863. Longfellow wrote the poem at a
time when tragedy plagued both his family
and the nation. In April 1861, the
Confederate army ignited the first battle of
the Civil War. In that same month,
Longfellow’s wife burned to death in the
midst of a Civil War battle. Just days later,
Longfellow’s son suffered severe battle
wounds that nearly claimed his life.
Longfellow attempts to express his inde-
scribable pain in the carol, saying, “In
despair I bowed my head.” Darkness, it
seemed for Longfellow, would have no end.
By 1863, there was still no indication of
the war coming to an end. Union General
and later President Ulysses S. Grant would
not successfully force Southern General
Robert E. Lee’s surrender to end the war
until April 9, 1865. The lyrics in the
poem, however, tell of a different future.
The lyrics describe a peaceful realm
beyond the Civil War that claimed the
lives of more than 350,000. Longfellow’s
words envision a nation no longer bur-
dened with the plague of racism or a
demand for slavery. Longfellow makes
several cries for peace on Earth and good-
will toward mankind.
In spite of the bitterness and violence
that claimed Longfellow’s family and his
nation, he strived to see a world with a
future of peace. He strived to see a nation
of people that did their best to uplift one
another in spite of their vast differences,
rather than soiling the Earth with the
blood of hatred and bone of prejudice. Two
years later, Longfellow was fortunate
enough to witness the end of that historic
war. Eventually, he managed to find peace
once again.
Longfellow’s story reminds us that, if we
cannot see a vision of peace and good will
toward mankind in our future, we certainly
cannot achieve it. We must all strive to see
a world much more peaceful than the one in
which we can physically see. With that
vision, we can implement the means of
good will toward others to accomplish it.
This holiday season, I would encourage
you to think of those you know who may
be suffering. It might be a family member,
a friend or a homeless person seeking to
find shelter. I encourage each of you to
seek out your fellow citizen to assist them
however possible. The more we can lift up
others who are struggling, the closer we
will find ourselves at a peaceful existence.
We glean the same message from world-
renowned poet John Donne, who said that
“no man is an island.” This symbolizes
the belief that the whole of humanity is
inextricably linked with one another —
our lives, our moral consciousness and our
fates. The notion that no man is an island
is proved time and again in the face of
even the most devastating circumstances.
We should recognize the concept of good
will toward mankind most during the holi-
day season. No matter how dark and deso-
late our world may appear, we should strive
each and every day to see a future by which
we can achieve a lasting peace.

Facebook changing how it
identifies ‘fake news’ stories
NEW YORK — Facebook says it is chang-
ing how it identifies “fake news” stories on
its platform to a more effective system.
The social-media network had put “disput-
ed” labels on stories that fact-checkers
found false. Instead, now it will bring up
“related articles” next to the false stories
that give context from fact-checkers on the
stories’ problems.
Facebook said Wednesday that in its tests,
fewer hoax articles were shared when they
had fact-checkers’ articles spooled up next
to them than when they were labeled with
“disputed” flags.
The new approach also may help speed up
the fact-checking system, which sometimes
worked too slowly.

$150M in Nevada in FY2017

in the form of tax abatements, nearly $115

The Nevada Appeal reports Tesla also
qualified for nearly $37 million in transfer-
able tax credits, which were purchased by
Nevada resorts to offset part of their gam-

Economy grew at solid 3.2
percent rate in third quarter

WASHINGTON — The U. S. economy
grew at a solid 3.2 percent annual rate from
July through September, slightly slower
than previously estimated but still enough
to give the country the best back-to-back
quarterly growth rates in three years.
The figure was revised down from last
month’s estimate of 3. 3 percent, the
Commerce Department reported Thursday.
The change reflected a bit less spending by
consumers, which was offset somewhat by
increased spending by state and local gov-
ernments.
Still, the 3.2 percent growth followed a
3.1 percent gain in the second quarter, the
first consecutive quarters that growth has
topped 3 percent since 2014.
President Donald Trump has pointed to
these gains as evidence his economic pro-
gram is producing results. Many econo-
mists believe GDP growth this quarter could
hit 3 percent or better.
Congress this week passed a major tax
overhaul, giving Trump the biggest legisla-
tive achievement of his first year in office.
Economists believe the proposal will
boost growth temporarily in 2018 and pos-
sibly 2019. But then they forecast that the
positive effects will fade, with slower
growth going forward due to higher interest
rates stemming from the bigger govern-
ment deficits.
But at the moment, economists are opti-
mistic about growth prospects. The Federal
Reserve’s Atlanta regional bank is forecast-
ing GDP growth could hit 3.3 percent this
quarter. If GDP does top 3 percent, it would
mark the first time that has occurred since
three quarters in late 2004 and early 2005.
Trump has predicted the tax cuts will be
“rocket fuel” for the economy and many
economists are looking for a growth spurt
next year.
“The economy is rock solid for now and
with fiscal stimulus kicking in next month,
the economy’s afterburners could put this
economy’s rocketing growth rate into even
higher orbit,” Chris Rupkey, chief finan-
cial analyst at MUFG Union Bank in New
York, said in reaction to the new GDP
report.

“adult supervisor” is getting closer to retire-
ment. Eric Schmidt, who took over as CEO
in 2001 three years after investors demand-
ed more mature leadership for the fast-grow-
ing tech giant, is stepping down as execu-
tive chairman of Google parent Alphabet in
January.
The 62-year-old billionaire will become a
technical adviser and will continue to sit on
the board of the company that was formed to
contain Google and its sprawling so-called
“moonshot” subsidiary businesses in 2015.
Schmidt, a former engineer who held top
executive jobs at Sun Microsystems Inc.
and Novell Inc., took the reins of the search
giant in 2001 from founders Larry Page and
Sergey Brin, who were technically brilliant
but were faulted for their management inex-
perience.
Page was restored as CEO in 2011,

According to the company’s latest proxy
filings from April, Schmidt held shares
worth about $4.9 billion and maintained
5.6 percent voting control over the compa-

enact record increases for the military this
year and force the Senate to debate a full-
year, $658 billion defense spending meas-
ure. But that idea was a nonstarter with

The short-term spending bill does con-
tain about $5 billion to upgrade missile

If you’re going to rely on two players to
do a majority of the damage, you can hardly
do better than the Menlo-Atherton girls’
basketball tandem of Greer Hoyem and
Carly McLanahan.
The only two seniors remaining on the
Bears’ active roster, Hoyem and McLanahan
combined for 40 points in M-A’s 50-42
home win Thursday over crosstown non-
league rival Sacred Heart Prep.

who didn’t play a lot last year are getting

tinue to develop, working in practice and
getting that game-time experience, we’ll
get better with taking care of the ball.”
Among M-A’s new cast of starters is jun-
ior Erica Fischer. A second-year varsity
player, Fischer lists as a guard, but was
thrust into a post assignment when senior
forward Stella Kailahi was lost for the sea-
son with a leg injury during a scrimmage
against Menlo School.

points — a point of contention for Coleman,

January. The legislation was passed as a pack-
age with the understanding that all the new rules
would all affect each other.

It should be a good
year for boys’ hoops

Like the San Mateo County
girls’ basketball season, the boys’
campaign should provide just as
much action as the start of league

Dick Enberg found
dead at home at 82

SAN DIEGO — Dick Enberg, the longtime sportscaster who
got his big break with UCLA basketball and went on to call
Super Bowls, Olympics, Final Fours and Angels and Padres
baseball games, died Thursday. He was 82.
Engberg’s daughter, Nicole, confirmed the death to The
Associated Press. She said the family
became concerned when he didn’t arrive on
his flight to Boston on Thursday, and that he
was found dead at his home in La Jolla, a San
Diego neighborhood, with his bags packed.
The family said it believes he had a heart
attack, but is awaiting official word.
Enberg retired in October 2016 after a 60-
year career — and countless calls of “Oh
my!” in describing a play that nearly defied
Dick Enberg description. He also was well-known for his
baseball catchphrase of “Touch ‘em all” for home runs.
Enberg’s first radio job was actually as a radio station custodi-
an in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, when he was a junior at Central
Michigan. He made $1 an hour. The owner also gave him week-
end sports and disc jockey gigs, also at $1 an hour. From there
he began doing high school and college football games.
During his nine years broadcasting UCLA basketball, the
Bruins won eight NCAA titles. Enberg broadcast nine no-hit-
ters, including two by San Francisco’s Tim Lincecum against the
Padres in 2013 and 2014.
He said the most historically important event he covered was
“The Game of the Century,” Houston’s victory over UCLA in
1968 that snapped the Bruins’ 47-game winning streak.

than just the league’s top-ranked scoring defense to deal
with when the Jacksonville Jaguars visit on Sunday.
Quarterback Blake Bortles has been much improved of
late, too, for the surprising first-place
Jags.
“It seems to me that Blake is playing
with a tremendous amount of confi-
dence,” said 49ers defensive coordinator
Robert Saleh, who spent the previous
three seasons as the Jaguars’ linebackers
coach. “He’s throwing darts, he’s very
accurate, he’s mobile, he’s tall in the
Robert Salah pocket, he looks lean, he looks in
shape. He looks fantastic.”
During the first 11 games, Bortles averaged 204 yards
passing and had a 79.5 quarterback rating (27th in the
NFL). But in the last three weeks, all home victories,
Bortles averaged more than 300 yards and had a 128.6 rat-
ing.
Jacksonville can clinch its first division title since 1999
by beating San Francisco.
The 49ers, meanwhile, could win four straight games for
the first time since 2013, the last season they made the
playoffs.

ALAMEDA — The touchdown passes and yards are down.
The interceptions and sacks are up.
The straight upward trajectory that Derek Carr’s career
took for his first three seasons in the NFL hit a speed bump
this season, contributing to the Oakland Raiders’ fall from
a 12-win team to one almost certain to miss the postseason.
But rather than being discouraged by the results, Carr said
he will use the lessons from this season to build for the
future.
“I use it all to just fuel the fire,” he said Thursday. “There’s
been things that I’ve gone through this year that I’ve never
been through and I’m learning how to deal with those
things and not just deal with them, but execute them at a
high level. So, I absolutely, 100 percent believe that going
forward, again, this time next year we’re standing here I’ll
feel like, man because I trust my work ethic, that I’m a bet-
ter player this year because of what I went through.”
Carr had few setbacks last season when he led Oakland to
seven comeback wins and was one of the most promising
quarterbacks in the league when he threw for 3,937 yards

elite pass defense. The Jags are No. 1 in sacks, passing
yards allowed (169) and opponents’ passer rating.
But with Bortles’ improved play and the return of rookie
running back Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville’s offense
could be rounding into form, too. Fournette, who leads all
rookies in rushing, missed last Sunday’s blowout win over
the Houston Texans with a quad injury. He’s expected to
play against San Francisco.
“I remember just seeing him in a college. For a guy to be
that big and run as well as he can run is unbelievable.
Ultimate God-given talent,” linebacker Eli Harold said.
The 49ers have allowed 90 yards rushing or fewer in each
of the last four games, but Fournette and the top-rated
Jaguars running attack should provide a tough challenge.
“It’s not just because they run the ball over and over again
and they have opportunities to run,” Saleh said. “They’re
very physical in the run game. They don’t try to trick you,
which I respect a lot. You don’t know exactly what they’re
going to do run-game wise, but they’ve got conviction in
what they are in the run game, and they line up and they try
to move the pile on the line of scrimmage.”
There’s some uncertainty surrounding San Francisco’s
best run defender. Defensive tackle DeForest Buckner
missed the first two practices of the week with an ankle
injury. Saleh is cautiously optimistic about Buckner’s sta-
tus for Sunday.
“He’s moving along. Trainers have said that he looks
good. So, we’ll see how it goes later on in the week,” he
said.

“With Stella out, I have to kind of fill her shoes,” Fischer
said. “Greer drags a lot of attention her way, so I’m pretty
open. So it helps.”
SHP (6-3) did well to bring its physical brand of basket-
ball into M-A’s house. And the Gators did well to defend
Hoyem early. M-A’s 6-1 center totaled eight points in the
first quarter, but the swarming defense of senior forward
Tatum Angotti and 6-2 freshman center Megan Norris forced
Hoyem to her weak side several times.
It wasn’t a tactic SHP was able to execute throughout the
night though.
“We had things we wanted to do that we just didn’t execute
against,” SHP head coach Melanie Murphy said. “We were
fine with them passing inside but, at the same time, we
wanted to push her a certain way. And we just didn’t. She
also made some really hard baskets. She’s a really good
player. So, hats off to here.”
Every Gators player got in the scoring column Thursday.
Unfortunately for shorthanded SHP, the team only has
seven players on roster. Angotti accounted for a team-high
10 points, while senior Grace Battles and sophomore
Charlotte Levison scored seven apiece.
“It’s a different look,” Murphy said, contrasting this
year’s squad with the 2016-17 team that reached both the
Central Coast Section championship game and CIF
Northern California semifinals. “We’re still young. We
only have two seniors on the team and then we have seven
total. So, we’re working through it.”

od opened for the first time on
Wednesday, about 1,850 players
signed national letters of intent,
according to ESPN recruiting analyst
Tom Luginbill. That number repre-
sents approximately 66 percent of
the total number of players that sign
in the Bowl Subdivision in an aver-
age class. About 97 percent of the
players who signed Wednesday had
already verbally committed to those
schools, according to Luginbill.
The early returns seemed to be more
positive than negative. Alabama’s
Nick Saban drew a lot of attention
days before the signing date when he
said that he had “not talked to one
coach who was happy with it.” But
plenty of coaches said they were
pleased to do more work in December
instead of January.

Maryland’s DJ Durkin, Purdue’s Jeff

for third place with a 7-5 mark. Burlingame
(0-6) appears on its way to another tough
season after posting just a 3-9 record in
2017.
The PAL North is off to a slow start, with
only two teams — Half Moon Bay (5-2) and
Jefferson (5-3) —  enjoying a winning
record thus far through non-league play. The
Cougars went through a coaching change in
the offseason, with alum John Parsons tak-
ing the reins. 6-9 senior center Ethan
Menzies has really stepped up his game this
season, averaging 21 points and 12
rebounds through four games played. Senior
point guard Sam Treanor is also off to a hot
start, averaging 18 points, 4 rebounds and 3
assists.
Jefferson has back-to-back strong sea-
sons and appear on its way to another solid
year in 2018. The Grizzlies have finished
10-2 in North Division play the last two
seasons.
The only other North team to finish 2017
with a winning record, Westmoor (8-4), is
off to slow start this season with a 2-5
mark.

USOC CEO apologizes, says he
was unaware of extent of abuse
The leader of the U.S. Olympic Committee
says in a letter he was not aware of the full
scope of the Larry Nassar sex-abuse allega-
tions before law enforcement got involved,
and that he had no knowledge of a settle-
ment between USA Gymnastics and 2012
Olympic champion McKayla Maroney in a
case involving the now-imprisoned former
team doctor.
CEO Scott Blackmun sent the letter, a
copy of which was obtained by The
Associated Press, on Thursday, the day after
Maroney filed a lawsuit seeking to invali-
date the nondisclosure clauses in the settle-
ment.
The USOC is named as a defendant, and the
lawsuit says the federation had a culture that
concealed known and suspected sex abusers.
In the letter, Blackmun said “I am so sorry
that the Olympic family failed these ath-
letes,” and that while the USOC found out
too late, it has taken steps to prevent future
abuse by creating the U. S. Center for

Court: Charity stuck with
fan payouts after holes-in-one
CHARLESTON, W.Va. — Most golfers
like short par 3s, but West Virginia Gov.
Jim Justice probably wishes No. 18 at the
Greenbrier Classic in 2015 was a little
longer — 33 yards longer to be exact.
In 2015, Justice’s charity promised fans
at the 18th hole $100 for the first hole-in-
one and $500 for the second in 2015.
Professionals George McNeill and Justin
Thomas aced the 137-yard hole, forcing the
charity to give almost $200,000 to fans
around the green.
The charity took out an insurance policy
on the payouts, but a federal appeals court
says the policy only covered holes at least
170 yards long.
Old White Charities Inc. accused the insur-
er of breach of contract for not covering the
payout, but the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals rejected that claim.
Jackman a great ‘Showman.’
But the movie? Not so much

“Don’t fight it,” goes the
opening song of “The Greatest
Showman,” sung by Hugh
Jackman. “It’s coming for
you, running at ya.”
Well, that’s for damn sure.
“The Greatest Showman” is a
one hour-and-45 minute
onslaught on the senses — all
peppy, fizzy ballads and fran-
tic energy, earnest sentiments
and impossibly good inten-
tions. It’s begging for love,
like a puppy serenading us
with pop songs.
It’s exhausting, and messy.
And that’s too bad, because
Jackman really IS one of the
great showmen of our time.
Give the man a stage and a
song, and it’s near impossible
not to love him. The movie?
Not so much.
Jackman plays P.T. Barnum,
the 19th-century businessman
and politician — but a show-
man above all — who founded
the Barnum & Bailey circus.
He did a lot more than that; the
movie’s publicity notes call
him “America’s original pop-
culture impresario.”

OK, but they weren’t singing 21st-centu-
ry pop ballads back then, and one of the
movie’s biggest problems is its almost
desperate determination to contemporize
everything for a young audience. It’s not
so much the casting of Zac Efron and
Zendaya as young lovers; it’s that they and
the others are given upbeat pop songs and
self-empowering anthems that would per-
haps sound great (if generic) on their own,
but simply feel jarring when sung by 19th-
century characters in period dress. It’s all
the more frustrating given that the songs
come from talented duo Benj Pasek and
Justin Paul, who wrote the lyrics for “La La
Land” and the terrific score for Broadway’s
“Dear Evan Hansen.”
The film is a debut feature from director
Michael Gracey, known for his work on
commercials and music videos, and that’s
telling, because it often feels like a collec-
tion of slickly produced music videos,
loosely tied together with a plot we’re not

supposed to care too much about.
It does start off with a bang — that open-
ing number set at the circus, with Jackman
in a top hat and long red coat, wielding a
cane and recalling the stylish emcee in
“Pippin. ” Then we go into flashback,
meeting the young Barnum as a poor boy, a
tailor’s son. He meets the angelic girl of
his dreams in a fancy mansion, and
resolves to marry her. “A million dreams is
all it’s gonna take,” he sings.
The song continues as the youngsters
segue into adulthood: “A million dreams
for the world we’re gonna make.” Their
early years together are short on cash,
long on, um, dreams. Wife Charity —
Michelle Williams, given little to do but
always genuine and touching — insists she
doesn’t regret leaving her wealthy past.
Barnum loses his first job, and comes up
with the idea of a museum of oddities. The
first version is a bust. Then one of his lit-
tle daughters tells him: “You need some-
thing alive.”
Light bulb! Barnum realizes his oddities
need to be human: General Tom Thumb, the
Bearded Lady, the Siamese twins. “They’re
laughing anyway,” he tells one of them,
“so why not get paid?” The place is a hit,
and suddenly Barnum’s very wealthy.
But he needs something more:
Acceptance, among the snobby elites. He
convinces a young, patrician playwright,
Philip (Efron) to join him in the business.
They seal the deal in an energetic number
set in a barroom, “The Other Side,” which
reminds us of those “High School Musical”
days and how we’ve rather missed Efron
singing and dancing. Soon Philip will be
falling in love with a beautiful, soft-spo-

ken acrobat (Zendaya), and their mixed-
race romance — scandalous back in the day
— will produce the sweet yet also generic
“Rewrite the Stars,” performed with the
help of aerial acrobatics.
Then there’s a subplot with the Swedish
soprano Jenny Lind — inspired by fact but
veering into the fictional. Barnum goes to
Europe to persuade Lind (Rebecca
Ferguson) to tour America; the high-stakes
enterprise, he reasons, will finally get him
embraced by high society.
If there’s an eleven-o’clock number, it’s
got to be “This Is Me,” ably sung by
Broadway belter Keala Settle, a motiva-
tional anthem that seems meant to stop the
show but sounds too familiar to really stir
the spirits. “I’m gonna send a flood, gonna
drown them out,” the bearded lady sings,
and alas, it’s an apt description of what
this movie seems to be doing: Drowning
us in pizazz and feel-good emotion, but not
making us think, or learn.  In the end, not
much is happening under that circus tent.
“The Greatest Showman,” a 20th Century
Fox release, is rated PG by the Motion
Picture Association of America “for the-
matic elements including a brawl. ”

“THE AUTOMATIC AGE: COIN-
OPERATED MACHINES , ” AT THE
SAN FRANCISCO AIRPORT MUSE-
UM. Coin-operated machines combine
mechanical novelty and automated conven-
ience. At the drop of a coin, they vend
goods, provide entertainment and offer
potential jackpot payouts and free merchan-
dise. Since their invention, these intrigu-
ing devices have incorporated decorative
graphics and innovative mechanisms that
capture the attention of people worldwide.
“The Automatic Age: Coin-Operated
Machines,” a selection of objects from the
Joe Welch American Antique Museum in San
Bruno highlights devices from the first 60
years of coin-operated mass production,
from wooden trade stimulators and curious,
novelty gum vendors, to slot machines, rac-
ing games and other automatic marvels.
FROM HOLY WATER TO POSTAGE
STAMPS. The earliest example of a coin-
operated device was an automatic holy water
dispenser described around 62 BCE by Greek
inventor and mathematician Hero. A five-
drachma coin dropped into the top of the
vessel-shaped font landed on a paddle direct-
ly below the coin slot and opened a valve,
dispensing a stream of holy water. British
inventors pioneered the next era in coin-
operated technology, beginning with the
honor boxes installed in public houses and
inns around 1615. These portable vending
machines dispensed tobacco in bulk from a
coin-opened door, and by the 1830s, more
sophisticated versions vended pre-measured
packets. Postage stamp dispensers and
machines that sold handkerchiefs, post-

WASHINGTON — At Christmastime,
Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor
would send her colleagues gift-wrapped
packages of homemade beef jerky from her
family’s cattle ranch in Arizona. Her col-
league Ruth Bader Ginsburg pronounced it
“very spicy.”
Now, home chefs can try making their
own, with guidance from O’Connor’s sup-
plier, her brother. His jerky-making instruc-
tions, minus the family’s secret sauce, are
part of a new book on the Supreme Court’s
food traditions. “Table for 9: Supreme Court
Food Traditions & Recipes,” out this month,
is part history book, part cookbook. It
includes more than three dozen recipes asso-
ciated with justices and their families.
“Food in good company has sustained
Supreme Court Justices through the ages,”
Ginsburg writes in the book’s forward.
Food is a way the court’s nine justices con-
nect. There are welcome dinners for new jus-
tices and retirement dinners for those who
are departing. O’Connor, the court’s first

cards, perfume, sweetmeats and other con-
fections followed.    
FEELING LUCKY? During the late
1800s, the coin-operated, automatic age
expanded into the United States with the
invention of a multitude of gambling
devices, trade stimulators, vending
machines and arcade games. Vertical-wheel
and multi-reel gambling devices, nick-
named slot machines for their coin-in-the-
slot operation, appeared alongside dice and
flip-card machines that mimicked casino
games. In areas where wagering was restrict-
ed, proprietors installed trade stimulators
on their counters. Trade stimulators required
an operator, such as a bartender or shop
clerk, to verify winning scores and award
prizes including cigars, drinks, checks for
merchandise and cash. To comply with anti-
gaming legislation, manufacturers designed
slot machines and trade stimulators as for-
tune-tellers, gum vendors, music players
and skill testers.
PINBALL MACHINES AND JUKE-
BOXES. At the turn of the 20th century,
coin-operated amusement parlors captivated
the public with automatic phonographs and
motion picture viewers. Almost overnight,
amusement parlors transformed into penny
arcades, stocked with a variety of automatic
music machines, picture viewers, fortune-
telling scales, strength testers and other
arcade games. The popularity of coin-oper-
ated devices surged again during the Great
Depression, when pinball machines and
amplified jukeboxes provided affordable
entertainment.

Automatic Age: Coin-Operated Machines”
is on view at the San Francisco Airport
Museum International Terminal, Departures

Clare Cushman, the book’s author, says
her offering is in part a response to visitors
asking at the Supreme Court’s gift shop
whether the court had a cookbook. The
White House visitor center’s gift shop has
several books on food and entertaining, and
some tourists expected the court would too,
said Cushman, the Supreme Court Historical
Society’s director of publications. So, for a
decade, when Cushman came across a recipe
or a food anecdote with a link to a justice,
she’d put it in a folder.
“The more I researched the more I realized
that this was a really substantial topic and
that it wasn’t going to be fluffy or ridiculous
to ask these extremely distinguished judges
questions like: What are your favorite foods
and what do you eat for lunch?” Cushman
said.

Musee Mecanique, one of the largest pri-
vately owned collections of mechanically
operated musical instruments and antique
arcade machines, includes everything from
turn-of-the-century hand cranked music
she, with help from Supreme Court curator
Catherine Fitts, contacted 35 families of
justices to ask for recipes and family food
stories. The results include instructions for
the pineapple and coconut cake Chief
Justice William Rehnquist’s wife baked
annually for his birthday. Maureen Scalia,
the wife of the late Justice Antonin Scalia,
the first Italian-American to serve on the
court, contributed a pasta sauce recipe.
Louise Gorsuch, the English-born wife of
Justice Neil Gorsuch, shared her marmalade
recipe. Gorsuch, the court’s newest member,
by tradition serves on the committee that
oversees the court’s public cafeteria.
Readers also learn about the justices’ food
habits. The first chief justice, John Jay,
liked oysters for breakfast. Justice Oliver
Wendell Holmes Jr. brought his lunch in a
tin ammunition box. And Justice John Paul
Stevens’ regular lunch was a peanut butter
and jelly sandwich with the crusts cut off.

“For me, eating is sacred. You should not
waste a meal, and so it can be simple and
healthy but it has to be tasty,” Sotomayor
said during a 2016 event on the Supreme
Court’s food traditions at the National
Museum of American History, an event that
helped spur the book’s creation.
The book has stories from the court’s
early history, too. It describes how in the
early 1800s, the justices lived and ate
together at a boarding house. Justice Joseph
Story reported they drank wine, but only
when it was raining. If he looked out the
window and the sun was shining, he was
sometimes told “it must be raining some-
where.”
In the late 1800s, when arguments were
scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. with no break
for lunch, the justices would step away indi-
vidually or in pairs to eat at small tables
behind the bench, the rattle of their knives
and forks audible to spectators.

Dried fruit, ginger and cognac

Fruit compote — or stewed fruit — is
an old-fashioned thing that seems just
right for right now.
The first time that I remember eating
it, I was at a childhood friend’s house
and her mother served it as a side dish.
Looking back, it could have been a
chew-able cocktail because her secret
was to cook the fruit in sugar and
water, and then cover it with brandy. It
was so potent that it should have come
with an age restriction.
But, nonetheless, I never forgot my
first taste and the idea of stewed fruit. I
love to make all kinds of dried fruit
compotes for topping simple desserts
— and oatmeal. I think of it as a sweet
relish, a condiment that is ready to
make a slice of ordinary pound cake, or
a bowl of ice cream into a more excit-
ing offering. But that’s not all, my

My favorite combination is dried
prunes, apricots and cherries and a tiny
bit of minced crystallized ginger. But
if you have dried pears, they would be
lovely in there as well. This is also a
good way to use up all the little bits of
dried fruit and raisins that you might
have left over from holiday baking.
I season the compote lightly with a
touch of nutmeg and vanilla, but a cin-
namon stick would be nice if you have
one. I also don’t add any additional
sugar as I find that dried fruit is sweet
enough. If you want to add a little
sugar, I would add dark brown sugar to
give the compote a deeper sweet fla-
vor. And, as a nod to my friend’s moth-
er, Dottie, I add just a splash of
cognac. Just enough to add flavor and
enhance the natural fruit flavors but
not so much that it becomes “drunken
fruit!”
My recipe is for about 3 cups of dried
fruit, but you can easily double or
triple it, and it stays good in the refrig-
erator for a very long time. This year, I
am going to make a triple batch and
fill pint mason jars to give as hostess
gifts during the busy holiday season.
DRIED FRUIT COMPOTE
Servings: 10
Start to finish: 3 1/2 hours (Active
time: 20 minutes)
1 cup filtered water
1 cup apple cider
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Pinch of salt
1/8teaspoon ground nutmeg
Zest of a clementine or half an

1 generous cup dried whole apricots
1/2generous cup dried cherries
1 tablespoon minced crystallized
ginger, optional
1 tablespoon cognac or Grand
Marnier, optional but a very good addi-
tion
Bring water, apple cider, vanilla,
salt, nutmeg to a boil in a heavy-bot-
tomed 4-quart pot.
Add zest and dried fruit and stir.
Bring back to a boil. Place the lid on
the pot and reduce heat to a simmer.
Simmer for 10 minutes or until fruit is
plump. Add the ginger and cognac if
using. Stir and turn off the heat. Let sit
for 2-3 hours or until it has cooled to
room temperature.
Place fruit and some of the liquid in a
mason jar for storing and gift giving.
Store in the refrigerator for about 1
month.
Warm slightly before serving over
oatmeal, pound cake, ice cream, rice
pudding, etc.

doesn’t feel right, doesn’t look right,
call us and we’ll come investigate.”
The rash of burglaries occurred
despite the department putting up
warning signs to both shoppers and
prospective thieves about the uptick
and police enforcement operations. In
October alone, 75 cases were reported
in San Mateo, primarily at shopping
centers with easy access to Highway
101 or State Route 92, she said.
Although a few arrests have been
made, the smash-and-grab thefts are a
common motive, she said.
People are warned to make sure cars
are locked and not leave anything in
plain sight, even empty bags. Because
burglars often canvass an area, shop-
pers should be aware of their surround-
ings and are advised not to drop off
goods then leave the vehicle unattend-
ed. Many of the recent San Mateo bur-
glaries occurred while people dined
after shopping, Von Glahn said.
Using a window punch, thieves
can be in and out in a matter of sec-
onds. Even if it’s an empty bag, it
could be bait for a burglar and end up
costing the owner hundreds of dol-
lars to repair a broken window, she
said, noting San Mateo isn’t alone

maintaining the landscape. Lawsuits

move to South San Francisco, where it

“It’s regional, everyone’s seeing a
significant increase. People are get-
ting hit pretty hard because it just hap-
pens so quickly, three to six seconds
they’re in and out,” Von Glahn said.
Sheriff’s Detective Sal Zuno also
cautioned holiday shoppers to keep
their property safe.
“This time of year we tend to see a
significant increase in property crimes
because crooks know people are out
shopping and they know people leave
those gifts they’ve taken all that time
to get, they leave them in plain view
in their vehicles because they’re
busy,” Zuno said. “All those hours that
you spent shopping for those gifts can
be gone in less than a minute when a
crook smashes your window.”
People should be sure to fully lock
their cars, and take time after exiting
their car to double check nothing is
left in plain site from the vantage of a
person walking by, he said.
“We know everyone’s busy,” Zuno
said, “but taking an extra minute will
save yourself from so much grief.”
With the rise of the online shopper,
the increase of package deliveries has
become an easy target for thieves as
well. There are a variety of precautions
people can take to avoid that Amazon
package from ending up in the wrong
hands.
People can have goods delivered
where they know someone will be
there, such as to an office or where a
friend or family member will be home.
People can also request a packaged be

Because thieves aren’t looking to
get caught and typically strike when
they believe no one’s home, there are a
variety of ways to protect residences
depending on one’s budget. Security
systems are ideal if a resident can
afford it, including surveillance cam-
eras or the wireless doorbell with
video, Zuno said.
And don’t be shy about that invest-
ment. Just as important is to advertise
you have surveillance system so peo-
ple know they’re being watch, Von
Glahn added. 
Even if you can’t afford a security
system, there are other ways to protect
your home such as plugging lights
into timers that go off at varying times
around the residence so it appears as
though someone’s there, Zuno said.
Many law enforcement agencies,
including San Mateo police and the
Sheriff’s Office, have been posting a
variety of tips online and through
social media. With the holidays in full
swing and the long weekend ahead,
police are encouraging people to take
a variety of measures to avoid becom-
ing victims.
“We just have to remind people to
keep it in their heads. Because some-
times the biggest mistake people can
make, is they become complacent,”
Zuno said.

Famed conductor accused of sexual misconduct

SAN FRANCISCO — Three opera
singers and a classical musician say that
world-renowned conductor Charles Dutoit
sexually assaulted them — physically
restraining them, forcing his body
against theirs, sometimes thrusting his
tongue into their mouths, and in one case,
sticking one of their hands down his
pants.
In separate interviews with The
Associated Press, the accusers provided
detailed accounts of incidents they say
occurred between 1985 and 2010 in a mov-
ing car, the two-time Grammy winner’s
hotel suite, his dressing room, an elevator
and the darkness of backstage.
The women accuse the 81-year-old artis-
tic director and principal conductor of
London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
of sexual misconduct on the sidelines of
rehearsals and performances in five cities
— Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis,
Philadelphia and Saratoga Springs, New
York.
“He threw me against the wall, shoved
my hand down his pants and shoved his
tongue down my throat,” retired mezzo-
soprano Paula Rasmussen recounted of an
incident she said occurred in his dressing
room at the LA Opera in September 1991.
Dutoit, who holds the titles of conductor
laureate of the Philadelphia Orchestra and
conductor emeritus of the NHK Symphony
Orchestra in Tokyo, did not respond to
multiple attempts to reach him through
the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and his
office in Montreal.
The Royal Philharmonic said Dutoit was
currently on vacation, but that it had for-
warded the AP’s emailed requests for com-
ment directly to him. The AP also reached
out to Dutoit’s office with several phone
calls and emails.
In a long, distinguished career, he also
has led highly regarded orchestras in
Pari s an d Mo n t real , an d t rav el ed t h e
globe as a guest conductor.
Citing the “extremely troubling” allega-
tions contained in the AP story, the
Boston Symphony Orchestra said later
Thursday Dutoit would “no longer appear
as a guest conductor.”
All four women said the Swiss-born con-
ductor either lured them to a private place
to discuss or practice music, or simply
seized a moment alone to make his move.
The women all said they resisted him and
escaped.
The AP spoke with colleagues and
friends of each accuser who confirmed the
women shared details of their experiences
at the time.

means he’s the only one serving beer when
it is open for tasting. He said he arrives at
the brewery around 8 a.m. most Sundays to
brew another batch of beer and maintain a
variety stocked in his cooling room, includ-
ing IPAs, Pilsners, lagers, a sour beer, a dark
beer and his famous Belgian beers. Well
aware he’s very attentive to detail, Porter
said he also cleans the tanks and kegs he
uses by hand, but isn’t averse to the idea of
automating some of the processes at his
next location.
“It’s funny because now I have this laun-
dry list of things I will automate for the next
place,” he said.
Porter said his background in science has
proven to be useful as he homes in on
recipes, noting his research on yeast’s role
in creating a wide range of substances like
fragrances and lubricants has helped him
understand how the organism can be used to
create a variety of beer flavors.
The 42-year-old San Francisco resident
said he’s been juggling his business with a
full-time job as a process engineer for San
Francisco-based food company Hampton
Creek. He said he became interested in creat-
ing his own business partly out of frustra-
tion with the level of pay that comes with
jobs in science and also to work on his own
projects.
Prior to starting the brewery, Porter start-
ed T-shirt and mountain bike tour compa-
nies. He said his first few forays into
becoming a small business owner were
daunting, especially one in the brewing
industry, which is known for high start-up
costs. But he also said getting the right
recipe, seeing customers come back every
weekend and fostering a small community
around the garage door of his warehouse
space on weekends has been incredibly
rewarding.
“What I had to do was … I had to go for
it,” he said. “Once you get things going and
once you start understanding what’s possi-
ble … it’s actually really inspiring and it
can actually make it easier to make those
leaps.”
Though he still has five years to go on his
current lease, Porter is already searching for
a commercial location where he’ll have
more space to serve beers and possibly set
up a larger brewing system. Though he is
interested in having his beer served at local
restaurants and pubs, he said
his current setup doesn’t
allow for him to expand pro-
duction to that level, mean-
ing those looking for a cold
one need to pay a visit to his
warehouse space.
Though he’s much more
aware of the many challenges associated
with starting his own brewery than he was
two years ago, for Porter, refining beers
that can’t be found anywhere else has made
it worth his time.
“Amazon will never be able to make good
craft beer,” he said. “So I tried to gun for …
something that I was good at and wouldn’t
be replaced.”

Recology San Mateo County TreeCycling

Recology San Mateo County will collect trees on your regular
collection day between December 26th and January 31st.
Please remove all decorations and tree stands (flocked
trees are accepted) before placing next to your green
compost cart. If your tree is under 6 feet, you can also place
the tree INSIDE your compost cart, trunk side up. If your
tree is taller than 8 feet, please cut the tree before placing
the pieces next to, or inside your compost cart.
Please note that trees may be collected by a different truck
and at a different service time than your regular collection.
Please have trees curbside and visible for the driver. 
After January 31st, please cut trees to fit inside your green
Compost cart.
Apartment Managers/Owners:
Please call to arrange for collection of holiday trees. Trees
can be collected in piles or in a drop box for no additional
