Big Bill! Fire Extinguisher Recall!

More than 40 million Kidde fire extinguishers

equipped with plastic handles, some on the
market for more than 40 years, have been
recalled. According to the Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC), “The fire
extinguishers can become clogged or require
excessive force to discharge and can fail to
activate during a fire emergency. In addition,
the nozzle can detach with enough force to pose
an impact hazard.” The BoatUS Foundation
for Boating Safety and Clean water is urging
recreational boat owners to check their boats for
the recalled extinguishers and get a free metal-
handled replacement by going to the CPSC
recall website.

The recall affects both plastic-handle and push-

button Pindicator Kidde fire extinguishers,
including 134, ABC- or BC-rated models
manufactured between January 1, 1973, and
August 15, 2017. The extinguishers are red,

recall website shows how to easily identify the
affected extinguishers.

In the recall, Kidde also acknowledged the free

replacement push-button extinguisher being sent
to personal watercraft owners is similar in size
to the recalled model but may not fit in the same
location as the old fire extinguisher. “This may
require a slightly different mounting orientation
or location,” said BoatUS Foundation Assistant
Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner.”

CPSC says there have been approximately

391 reports of failed or limited activation or
nozzle detachment, including one fatality;
approximately 16 injuries, including smoke
inhalation and minor burns; and approximately
91 reports of property damage.

Get a H o l i d ay G i f t F r o m O n e of Our Own!

It’s the gift giving season and sure, there’s Amazon, Target and a gabillion other stores to pick up that special something for that special somebody. But,
what’s also cool to do around this time of year that promotes thoughtfulness in every direction is to also support our own neighbors who are creating
products that make great gifts.

For instance, Bill McNeely, who writes the Catalina column in The Mariner, wrote a great Catalina cruising book called Cruising Catalina Island (2nd
Ed.) He also is part of two excellent how-to videos for “Cruising Catalina and Mexico”, “Cast Off for Catalina” and “Cast Off for Mexico”. All of these
are great gifts for local boaters.

Staying on the book theme, another one of our own, Peter Jenvay wrote an interesting book about his seafaring adventures called “The Life and Sudden
Death of Salt Peter.” Peter cast off from the docks of Marina del Rey by himself on a journey around the world and had some interesting adventures
along the way. It’s available on Amazon.

If books and videos aren’t on your list maybe some extremely unique handmade jewelry is. Dr. Maddalena Bearzi, a well-known marine mammal
scientist who studies the wildlife in the Santa Monica Bay and operates out of Marina del Rey is also a very talented jewelry maker. Her pieces are
inspired by the work she does and they are nothing short of stunning (see story on page 21).

Del Rey Yacht Club’s Rikki Barker is also a local artisan who is creating beautiful jewelry pieces. Rikki is the former General manager of The Argonaut
newspaper and the current President of the Marina del Rey Historical Society. After she left the Argonaut she dove full-on into creating jewelry and
these creations reflect her devotion. Check out her pieces at www.etsy.com/shop/WraptinWire.

Then there’s stuff like sailing lessons that Naos yachts runs or powerboat instruction that the Los Angeles Powerboat Academy provides (yachts4fun.
com). Canvas, electronics—there’s all kinds of things in these pages that will make for useful gift ideas. Let’s face it, owning a boat ain’t cheap and
there’s always something that we need. Let’s support each other this season and maybe we’ll all have a great holiday!

I
RACING SCE N E

remember when The Mariner first started, one of the first on water photo-shoots I did was Del Rey Yacht Club’s Berger/Stein race. I had
a 9-foot hard bottom dinghy with a 5-hp Suzuki and I buzzed out to the starting line—beanie on head, camera in hand. It was winter and
a bit California cold—a bunch of the rockstar sleds were galloping along and I could hear the moaning sounds of purebred racing yachts
managing the loads their massive sail areas were carrying. I turned off the two-stroke and listened to the sounds of a local race start.

As the 90 boats all mingled, I noticed some skippers would nod respectfully at one another while their crew sat on the rail staring straight
ahead, others shouted over good-hearted stuff to friends they had on other boats. There were a few crews that were clearly practicing or
working out some new sail or piece of equipment, talking amongst themselves.

I didn’t quite understand at that time, that this race was special. It was the first of the year and an unofficial start to a new racing season. Many of these
boats hadn’t been racing in quite a few months, so there was an excitement and maybe even a form of relief to be back in the Bay competing. It was
nearly 11 a.m, the air was crisp and the starting area was filled with people who were happy to be out sailing again.

The NORs mandated the fleet sail up to Malibu and back, which is always a beautiful day sail. Should the wind rise above the 5-knots we were
experiencing many would get back just before the sun began to set.

I see the first Berger as something a bit more exceptional and particular, it has a kind of poetry and meaning that is distinct from other races.

So after the New Years celebrations are in the can, on January 6, it will happen again. The air horns will blast, sending 100 some-odd boats up north
and the 2018 yacht-racing season will unofficially begin. Get out there and join them!

The series is open to PHRF, ORCA, Cruiser/Novice and Single and Double-handed classes. For more information contact the Del Rey Yacht Club at
