1.0 Objective

To check the adequacy of open space provided in the overall layout plan to act as a
landscape detention area for storm water.

2.0 Introduction

The purpose of the report is to propose a storm water management option for the layout
plan approval for the CADANGAN MEMBINA 2 UNIT RUMAH BERKEMBAR 4
TINGKAT, JALAN NGAH IBRAHIM 35/135A, SEKSYEN 35, 40470 SHAH ALAM,
SELANGOR.

3.0 Catchment

The proposed development is located at , JALAN NGAH IBRAHIM 35/135A, SEKSYEN

35, 40470 SHAH ALAM, SELANGOR.

The land area of the development is about 1.51 acres.

4.0 Existing Catchment Conditions

The existing site is grown with the trees. The site is generally hilly at approximately
RL 59 m to RL 48 m. This site is proposed to be more cut and little part fill of the site.
The access to the site will generally be at about the same level of the existing main road.

5.0 Proposed Development

The site is proposed to be developed into a 226 units of 5 storey hostel which can
accommodate 226 peoples. The central sewage treatment plant reserve done by
Perunding Bersatu Consultant Engineers approved with JPP.
6.0 Storm Water Management Practice.

As outline in the Urban stormwater management manual, stormwater flow rates after
development should approximately equal to the pre-development conditions. As such
we propose that the additional runoff after development shall be directed to a suitable
detention facility for this purpose.

7.0 Methodolgy

For drainage design, it had several components need to be considered such as type of
drainage, type of culvert, depth of sump, storm water runoff and capacity of the drain.
The drainage system was designed base on the MASMA

Steps to design drainage and culvert:

1. Plan the water flow of drainage.
2. Identify the critical path of the drainage water flow to final discharge
point.
3. Label the section nodes of the critical path.
4. Identify the length of every section and catchment area contributes to
the section.
5. Identify the type and gradient of drainage used for the project.
6. Calculate the storm water runoff using the equation:
𝐶𝑥𝑖𝑥𝐴 𝑚3
𝑄= ( ) (3.8)
360 𝑠

7. Calculate the capacity of drain by using the equation:

2 1
1
𝑄 = 𝑛 𝑥 𝐴 𝑥 𝑅3 𝑥 𝑆 2 (3.9)

8. Make sure that the capacity of drain is greater than storm water runoff.
If not, add coping or increase the size of drain.
9. Calculate the invert level of drain and sump.
10. For culvert design, calculate storm water runoff similar to step (5) and
check the box culvert capacity using nomograph as shown as Figure 1.
11. Make sure the invert level of final discharge point such as inlet of OSD
pond is at desired level. If not, increase the gradient of drain or size of
drain.
12. Record all the design data in a summary table as shown as Figure 2

FIGURE 2: Summary table of drainage design

Equation used:

𝑆𝐼𝐿 = 𝑅𝐿 − ℎ𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑒 (3.1)

𝐿𝑒𝑛𝑔𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑒
𝐼𝐿 = 𝑆𝐼𝐿 − 𝐺𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑖𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑟𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑎𝑔𝑒 (3.2)

𝐼𝐿𝑆 = 𝐼𝐿 − 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑝 (3.3)

Where, SIL = starting invert level

RL = Road level
IL = invert level
ILS = invert level of sump
