Hardware and Software Requirements

To install and run the plug-in requires: 

• A Petrel software installation of appropriate version (see release notes for supported versions) 

• Any prerequisites of the above (versions of Windows, .NET etc.) 

• Hardware requirements, software/operating system requirements per the above 

• Visual C++ Redistributable Package for Visual Studio 2013
o Note: Download available at https://www.microsoft.com/en-
us/download/details.aspx?id=40784 as of January 2016.
• Appropriate license for Petrel core software – Geoscience, Reservoir Engineering or Combined
(preferred) 

• Appropriate licenses for geoSTATE 

• geoSTATE installed

Installation Procedure
Installation overview
• Before starting, Petrel must be installed on your system 


• Make sure you install the appropriate version/platform of the plug-in for the version/platform of
Petrel. The version of Petrel supported by an installer is specified in the installer file name. 

• geoSTATE for Petrel requires a license key. This license is administered in the same way as the
license for Petrel or other Petrel plug-ins. (Note: Demo licenses are available from the Ocean
Store (www.ocean.slb.com). Contact GeoScale, Inc. or your Schlumberger Software account
manager for longer term licenses.
• geoSTATE for Petrel is available as a pip from the Ocean Store (www.ocean.slb.com)
• Installations using pip files should not be mixed with installations using msi files for the same
Petrel installation. Similarly, single user and all user installations should not be mixed. 

• Review the chapter on managing plug-ins in the Petrel Installation Guide. 

• Visual C++ Redistributable Package for Visual Studio 2013 must be installed prior to running the
geoSTATE plug-in.

Installation
• If you have installed an older version of the geoSTATE plug-in, uninstall this first.
• Follow your site policy on installing the plug-in license alongside your Petrel license. Describing
the many ways that Petrel licenses can be configured is beyond the scope of this document, but at
a minimum you will need to add the plug-in license to the file, file list or folder containing your
Petrel license in Schlumberger Licensing.
• Close any running instances of the Petrel software on your machine. 

• Installing geoSTATE using the PIP file
o Launch Petrel.
o Go to File -> Options and then click on Plug-in Manager.
o Click the “Install plug-in” button and select the geoSTATE PIP file, previously
downloaded from the Ocean Store. Note: Ensure the PIP file is for the version of Petrel
you are running.
o Close Petrel
• Once geoSTATE has been installed it will appear in the list of available plug-ins on Petrel’s
license package dialog. If no favorite package has been selected, the license package dialog will
be shown when Petrel is launched.
• geoSTATE is accessible from the Process Window and from the ribbon under Well Design, Well
Engineering, Property Modeling and Seismic Interpretation.

Uninstallation Procedure
To uninstall the geoSTATE plug-in:

• Launch Petrel 2015 (if it is not already running)
• Go to File->Options->Plug-in manager
• Select geoSTATE from the list
• Press the Uninstall button associated with the plug-in.
• Exit and re-start Petrel in order for the change to take effect.

If the plug-in has been successfully installed, a directory named “geoSTATE V1.x_x.x.x.x” will be
created under YOUR PETREL 201x\ Extensions directory. The following files will be placed under

Modified files 
 After the plug-in installation, the PluginManagerSettings.xml file under
C:\Users\All Users\Schlumberger\Petrel\2015 is modified. 


Once the plug-in has been successfully un-installed, the directory “geoSTATE V1.x_x.x.x.x”, and its
files, under PETREL 201x\ Extensions will be removed.
