Description: € Notes on a sermon by Daniel Williams, Man made righteous by Christ’s obedience
(1684). The notes are headed “Who righteous man” and captioned “Mr. William [sic]
Aug. 96”.
One sheet, folded to form four pages, 150 × 88 mm.

Description: € A list in Locke’s hand of persons to receive presentation copies of his Several
papers, captioned “Several papers 96 Copys”. The list contains two names, neither of
which appear on the list in MS. Locke c. 25, f. 53v (next item).

Description: € A list in Locke’s hand of persons to receive presentation copies of his Several
papers, in a column headed “Several papers relateing to Money, Interest & Trade 1696”,
on a sheet endorsed “Copys 95”. The list contains three names, none of which appear
on the list in MS. Locke f. 29, p. 160 (previous item).
The manuscript consists of on folded sheet, 310 × 193 mm; this list is in the second
column on the first page.

Description: € A list in Locke’s hand of persons to receive presentation copies of the first
edition of his Education, in a column headed “Education 1693”, on a sheet endorsed
“Copys 95”. The list provides for 26 copies. An earlier list (1693?) survives in MS.
Locke f. 29, p. 144; given its place on this sheet, this list seems to be a fair copy made in
1696 or later.
The manuscript consists of on folded sheet, 310 × 193 mm; this list is in the third
column on the first page.

Description: € A list in Locke’s hand of persons to receive presentation copies of the third
edition of his Education, in a column headed “Education 1695”, on a sheet endorsed
“Copys 95”. The list provides for 25 copies. There is an earlier version of this list in
MS. Locke f. 29, p. 145; given its place on this sheet, the present list seems to be a fair
copy made in 1696 or later.
The manuscript consists of on folded sheet, 310 × 193 mm; this list is in the fourth
column on the first page.

Description: € A list in Locke’s hand of persons to receive presentation copies of the third
edition of his Essay, in a column headed “Human understanding 3d Edit”, on a sheet
endorsed “Copys 95”. The list provides for 3 copies; it may be a fair copy of the list in
MS. Locke f. 29, p. 33; given its place on this sheet and the names listed, the present list
seems to have been written between 1696 and 1698.
The manuscript consists of on folded sheet, 310 × 193 mm; this list is in the first
column on the second page.

Critique of Bentley, Of the revelation and the Messias € [1696?]

Description: € Notes on a sermon by Richard Bentley, Of the revelation and the Messias (1696).
On a sheet folded to form four pages, 315 × 195 mm; f. 144 is blank except for the
endorsement “Dr Bentley | Ns Critick on his | Sermon”. The authorship of the notes
is unclear. Bentley’s sermon was preached on July 5 and published later in 1696.

Deus. Des Cartes’s proof of a God from the idea of necessary


existence examined € (1696)
Location: € Bodleian Library, MS. Locke c. 28, f. 119-120.

Description: € A paper endorsed “Deus Des Cartes’s proof of a god from the Idea of
necessary existence examined 1696”. The endorsement and first few words are in
Locke’s hand; the remainder is in the hand of Locke’s servant Timothy Kiplin, and
therefore dating after Kiplin entered Locke’s service on 7 Nov. 1696.
The manuscript consists of a sheet of paper folded once to form 4 leaves, 315 × 195
mm. The pages are divided into two equal columns; the text is written in the left-hand
column, with a few additions by Locke in the right-hand column. Locke’s initials appear
at the end of the text.

Revelation, Its several ways under the old Testament € (1696)


Location: € Bodleian Library, MS. Locke c. 28, ff. 138-141.

Description: € A paper containing notes by Locke from the Old Testament on divine
revelation, endorsed (f. 141v) “Revelation its several ways under the old Testament
[16]96”; f. 138r is headed “Revelation 96”. The notes are given under the following
marginal captions: “Revelation” (f. 138r; “Inspiration”, “prophesie” (f. 139r; “Vision”,
“Dream” (f. 139v); “Signe”, “Angel” (f. 140r; “Prophet”, “Spirit” (f. 140v. F. 141 is
blank except for the endorsement on the verso.
The manuscript consists of three sheets of paper folded once to form 6 leaves.

Description: € A note in Locke’s hand, with the marginal caption “Ambusta”, dated ”96“,
and intialed by Locke.

Sores. Tincture of camphor € 1696.


Location: € Glawgow University, MS. Murray 416, pages 94-95.

Description: € A medical receipt from “Anne Docwra.” The receipt is not in Locke’s hand.
There is a marginal caption “Sores” and a centered heading “Tincture of Camphir”.
The receipt occurs on pages headed “96”; it was most likely written in 1696.
One of three receipts from Anne Docwra, a Quaker writer residing in Cambridge
and a correspondent of Damaris Masham.
