Relations between China and Africa have long history and have seen several changes of
China’s African foreign policy over the time. During the Cold War, China’s African policy was
primarily politically and ideology driven in supporting African people in their struggle for
national independence, supporting anti imperialism and colonialism. China at that time also
formed an alliance under the newly established third world movement by joining 1955 Bandung
Conference along with a small group of African nations, Asian, and Latin American nations.
There was fluctuation in China African relations during cold war, because China under Deng
Xiao Ping focus on domestic economy and China’s Attention turned to the relation with west.

Nowdays, China’s African policy has had both political and economic focus and other
forms of cooperation, the present strategy manifested in the Forum on China Africa Cooperations
(FOCAC). In other word, Africa is important to China as a vast source to feed its growing
manufacturing base, as well as a source of energy security. The highly intensive diplomatic
activities took place since 2000 and China’s marked 2006 as the “Year of Africa”. In January
2006, china’s government issued the China’s African policy, the document that embodies
comprehensive and long term plan for enhance cooperation between china and Africa.

The result shows that changing of China’s policy towards Africa influenced by internal
and external factor. Internal factors includes Mao’s view toward international world, Deng Xiao
Ping’s open doors policy and external factors include china’s need of oil in Africa and changing
of issue in international world during post cold war.
