Course day/time: Tuesday 10:00 am-5:00 pm

Course Description:

The goal of the Preclinical Removable Partial Prosthodontics Course is to

familiarize the student with all the aspects of this discipline of dentistry – theoretical,
technical and clinical so that she or he will be able to confidently and accurately provide
removable partial dentures for the partially edentulous patient in clinical practice.

Course Objectives:

In this course, the student will perform the following procedures, together with
knowing and understanding the principles underlying them and utilizing all the
instruments and materials needed:

1. Classify partially edentulous patients who require removable partial dentures.

2. Fabricate and use occlusion rims to record the maxillomandibular relationship
of the partially edentulous patient and articulate the patient’s casts.
3. Duplicate casts, utilizing impression trays and irreversible hydrocolloid.
4. Survey casts of partially edentulous patients, diagnose, plan treatment and
design frameworks for removable partial dentures which incorporate all
necessary components.
5. Prepare all types of rest seats and guide planes on abutment teeth for
removable partial dentures.
6. Make accurate impressions of the edentulous and partially edentulous mouth
and evaluate their adequacy from examination of the impressions.
7. Fabricate accurate casts from impressions of the mouth.
8. Prepare a removable partial denture abutment tooth for a complete crown
restoration and make the wax pattern for the crown.
9. Write the laboratory work authorizations for removable partial denture
frameworks.
10. Know the laboratory phases of fabrication of frameworks for removable
partial dentures and design frameworks on master casts.

11. Block out master casts.
12. Make refractory casts for framework fabrication by duplicating the blocked
out master cast.
13. Transfer framework designs to refractory casts and make wax and plastic
patterns for metal frameworks.
14. Arrange teeth and make wax patterns for acrylic resin treatment (interim)
removable partial dentures.
15. Know basic principles and fabricate immediate interim removable partial
dentures.
16. Fabricate wrought wire clasps.

Related Competencies (as defined by educational outcomes):

 4.6 Produce diagnostic casts and articulate them as appropriate for the
patient.
 18.1 Perform conservative, biomechanically sound tooth preparations.
 18.2 Select and manipulate restorative materials to establish anatomical
form, function and esthetics.
 18.3 Treat the partially or completely edentulous patient and recognize the
need for referral.
 18.4 Prescribe the laboratory fabrication of restorations and prostheses,
assess their quality and modify them if indicated.
Evaluation Criteria / Methods:

The final grade will be determined by technical performance on five practical

exams (dropping lowest grade) and a final practical exam and six laboratory projects.
The cumulative passing grade on all instruments is 70%. All project failures must be
remediated with a maximum grade of 70%.

1. Practical Exams: 80 % of the total grade

I. Occlusal rest seat 10% 08/24/10

II. Cingulum rest seat 10% 09/07/10
III. Incisal notch rest seat 10% 10/05/10
IV. Lug rest seat 10% 11/02/10
V. Optional practical exam 10% 11/16/10
(lowest grade rest seat practical dropped)
♦ Final practical exam 40% 12/07/10

• Wax/Plastic RPD Patterns 11/16/10
• Self Design Project 11/23/10

Class participation (Signed Progress sheet required) 12/07/10

♦ All class participation activities are required.

All exams must be taken and all projects completed and picked up on time, unless
there is a documented excuse for absence. No incomplete grades will be submitted.
Projects turned in or picked up late will be eligible for a maximum grade of 70%
