Code of practices

Malaysian Standard MS 930:2017 Installation of fuel gas piping systems and appliances -
Code of practice (Second revision)
 According to Section 1.1.1 Scope, the maximum piping system operating pressure is
860 kPa (125 psi) except for piping systems for gas-air mixtures within the flammable
range and LPG piping system. Pressure is limited at 70 kPa (10 psi) and 140 kPa (20
psi) respectively.
 According to Section 4.1.1 Installation of piping system, piping drawing shall be
prepared before installation.
 The existing piping capacity should be checked before connecting additional
appliances to a gas piping system as per Section 4.1.2 Addition To Existing System
 Location of point of delivery shall be acceptable to the serving gas supplier as per
Section 4.2 Provision for Location of Point of Delivery
 Gas piping shall be of such size to provide a supply of gas sufficient enough to meet
maximum demand without undue loss of pressure between delivery point and the
appliance as per Section 4.4.1 Sizing of Gas Piping Systems General
Considerations.
 Section 4.4.2 General Pipe Sizing Considerations are the factors considered for
pipe sizing; allowable loss in pressure from point of delivery to appliance, maximum
gas demand, length of piping and number of fittings, specific gravity of the gas,
coincident factor and foreseeable future demand.
 Section 4.4.3 Maximum Gas Demand provides table of approximate gas input for
typical appliance.
 Section 4.4.5 Allowable Pressure Drop states the allowable pressure drop shall not
exceed 15% of supply pressure or as approved by authority and Section 4.4.6
Maximum Velocity states that the maximum velocity shall not exceed 20 m/s or as
approved by the authority having jurisdiction.
 The maximum operating pressure for piping systems located inside buildings shall not
exceed 34 kPa (5 psi), unless approved by authority having jurisdiction as per Section
4.5.1 Maximum Operating Pressure.
 Section 4.5.2 Liquefied Petroleum Gas System limits the operating pressure for
LPG systems to 140 kPa (20 psi).
 Section 4.6 Acceptable Piping Materials, Components and Jointing Methods
contains all the materials and requirements to be met prior to selection of material,
components and jointing method.
 Section 4.8.1 Gas Pressure Installation recommends pressure regulator to be
installed where the gas supply pressure is higher than that at which the branch supply
line or appliances are designed to operate or vary beyond pressure limit.
 Section 5.1.1 Piping Clearances states underground gas piping shall be installed with
clearance from any other underground structure
 Section 5.1.3 Protection against Corrosion states gas piping in contact with earth or
other material that could corrode the piping shall be protected against corrosion in an
approved manner as required by the authorities.
 Section 6.1.1.1 Pressure Testing and Inspection states prior to acceptance and
initial operation, all piping installations shall be inspected and tested to determine that
the materials, design, fabrication and installations practices comply with the
requirements of this standard.
 Section 6.1.2 Test Medium states the test medium shall be air or inert gas and that
oxygen shall never be used. Pipelines shall be tested to at least 1.5 times design
pressure or maximum allowable operating pressure (MAOP) for hydro test. Soap
bubble may be used to locate leaks if any joints are accessible during the test.

Transportation of Liquefied Petroleum Gases (Second Revision)

 Section 1.4.1 LPG to be Odorised states LPG shall be odorised by the addition of a
warning agent of such character that it is detectable by a distinct odour, down to a
concentration in air of not over one-fifth of the lower limit of flammability.
 Section 2.3.1 Design Pressure states design pressure for aboveground containers are
up to 0.5 kl water capacity.
