Main Components
The magnetic gears have 3 concentric rings as shown in the figure below. The
shafts are connected with the inner and the outer rotor. The red and blue colors
in the figure represent the north and south poles respectively.
Working
The working is fairly simple with the magnetic poles "pulling" the poles present
in the other rotor. Each rotor is made up of permanent magnets with a radial
field. The shaft which has to rotate slower and provide higher torque has a
greater number of poles - Outer rotor in above case.
Usually the pole piece ring is stationary. A very common term used in the

Gr = (N O)/(N I )
For the gear shown, there are 10 and 4 pole pairs in outer and inner ring
respectively, and hence Gear ratio comes out to be 10/4 = 2.5.
Also the number of pole pieces to be used in second ring is given by the sum of
number of pole pairs in outer and inner rings. (10 + 4 = 14 in the above figure)
Advantages
Most of the advantages occur because of the absence of direct contact between
the parts.
Lubrication free
Disadvantages
Interference: Most of the parts where gears are conventionally used are
made of Iron alloys. The magnetic field interference can occur.
Various types
There can be both external and internal magnetic gears along with various types
of bevel gears. Some examples are shown.
