3 Calculations for Mix Design

3.1 Target mean strength of concrete N/mm2

3.1.1 Selection of water cement ratio

From fig 1 of IS 10262 - 1982 for the target mean strength of 47.0 N / mm2, water cement ratio required is 0.325 which
max 0.50 water cement ratio for moderate exposure conditions as per IS 456 - 2000

so w/c ratio = 0.33 max = 0.5

3.1.2 Selection of water and sand content

From table 4 of 10262 - 1982 for 20mm nominal max size aggregate water content per cubic meter of concrete is 18
sand content as percentage of total aggregate by absolute volume is

=
change in values in water cement ratio, compacting factor and sand belonging to grading zone II
Change in conditions Adjustments required in

water content percent

For decrese in water cement ratio by ( 0.60 - 0.379) see next

page i.e. 0.221 0.0

For increase in compacting factor ( 0.93 - 0.80 ) i.e. 0.12 3.9

For sand conforming to zone II of IS 383 - 1970 0.0

Reduce water while using super plastisizer 1.5 lit / m3 -22.5

total 3.9 and

-22.5 lit/m3

Therefore required sand content as percentage of total aggregate by =

absolute volume

Required water content =

3.1.3 Determination of cement content

Water cement ratio =

Water =

Cement =

525.40 kg cement is higher than max limit of 450 kg /m3, and as such trail is made with cement kg /m3
450 and w/c adopted as per equation

Water cement ratio adopted for

450 kg cement =

therefore cement required =

3.1.4 Determinatin of coarse and fine aggregates

From table 3 of IS 10262-1982 for max size aggregate of 20 mm the amount of

entrapped air in wet concrete is 2 % (assumed ) Takng this equation into
account applying equation as per IS 10262,3.5.1,the calculations are as follows
From table 3 of IS 10262-1982 for max size aggregate of 20 mm the amount of
entrapped air in wet concrete is 2 % (assumed ) Takng this equation into
account applying equation as per IS 10262,3.5.1,the calculations are as follows
1 * 2% = 0.02

3.1.4.1. For fine aggregates

V = [ W + C + 1 . fa ] *
Sc p Sfa

substituting the values

0.98 m3 = [ 170.75 + 450.0 + 1 . fa ] *

3.15 30.60% 2.7

980 = [ 170.75 + 142.86 + fa ]

0.826

980 = [ 313.61 + fa ]
0.826

666.39 = fa
0.826

550.57 = fa

so fine aggregates = 550.57 kg

For coarse aggregates

V = [ W + C + 1 . Ca ] *
Sc 1-p Sca

0.98 m3 = [ 170.75 + 450.0 + 1 . Ca ] *

3.15 69.40% 2.7

980 = [ 170.75 + 142.86 + Ca ]

1.87

980 = [ 313.61 + Ca ]
1.87

666.39 = [ Ca ]
1.87

1248.68 = Ca

so coarse aggregates = 1248.68 kg

Proportions comes out as
