Mindfulness for the Gifted Learner Workshop

Rationale: This workshop will allow educators to learn about the benefits of
mindfulness and how to implement mindful strategies into their classroom/school
setting. These strategies will benefit gifted learners, and all learners in the
classroom environment. Strategies will focus on social and emotional
development, assisting students with learning how to identify their feelings and
take time to relax, reset, and seek guidance when needed.

Objectives:

1) teach strategies on how to support gifted students with social and emotional
learning (coping skills, relaxation, depression, anxiety, etc.)
2) supporting healthy and positive school climates
3) define and explain the benefits of mindfulness
4) integrating mindfulness into a classroom and school setting

9:00AM-9:10AM Introduction to Mindfulness


The workshop will begin with a mindful activity that allows the participants to
experience mindfulness. This will set the stage for the workshop, introducing one
way educators can use mindfulness in their classroom. Educators within the
room will document their feelings after the activity and discuss with colleagues
the benefits of the activity. The activity will be structured similar to the lesson
plan in the link below:

The mindful body and listening portions will be adapted for the educators but
using similar techniques. After the calming/mindfulness, participants will journal,
as stated in this lesson plan.

This will be the introduction to mindfulness and lead into discussion of what
mindfulness is and what it entails.

This TED Talk will introduce and expand on mindfulness and why it is beneficial
within schools.

incorporate mindfulness into their daily routines both personally and in their
classroom.
