Decimal (Part 3)

Converting decimal to fraction

• Number to the left of the decimal point becomes the whole number part.
• Number to the right of the decimal point becomes the fraction part.
• Put 2 decimal places over 100, or 3 decimal places over 1000, or 4 decimal places over 10000 etc.
• Remember to simplify the fraction whenever possible.

Exercise:

1. 6.4
2. 10.15
3. 9.075
4. 18.12

Converting fraction to decimal

• If the denominator is a power of 10, simply change the fraction to a decimal using knowledge of place value.
• If the denominator is not a power of 10, try to change it to an equivalent fraction with a power of 10
denominator, and then convert to a decimal.
• Another method is to divide the numerator (top number) by the denominator (bottom number).
• Recurring decimals are decimals with a repeated pattern. A dot above a number means that number repeats
forever. A dot above the start and end numbers means that number pattern repeats forever.
Example: = 0.333 … = 0. 3 Example: = 1.181818 … = 1. 18 Example: 0.135135 … = 0. 135
