Question: Compute the input resistance of the circuits depicted in Fig below.

Answer: the input impedance is measured between the input nodes (input signal and ground for above
case) of the circuit. If we make small signal equivalent circuit for the above fig, We will get R1, R2 and
r as input resistances. Looking into the base of Q1 we see an equivalent resistance of r, so we can draw
the following
Equivalent circuit for finding Rin:
Coupling Capacitors:
In analog circuits, a coupling capacitor is used to join two circuits such that simply an AC
signal from the first circuit is able to pass throughout the next circuit while the DC is blocked.
This method helps to isolate the DC bias settings of the two coupled circuits.

Example: For the above circuit, during large signal (dc) analysis C1 and C2 will behave as open
circuit and we will get the following circuit.

Now, we can easily perform large signal analysis to get Ic,Vc, gm, r etc.
After this we will start small signal analysis which includes AC signals. C1 and C2 will behave as short
circuit for AC analysis. So, during small signal analysis 2KΩ will be short ed by C2 and Vcc will be turned
off. Our new circuit will look like as:

Now, we will make small signal equivalent model for BJT and find the voltage gain.
