students what they think the book is about and why.

2 min 2. The sequence of learning experiences: Explain to the students that the story is
written in the first person which means I am the character “Hubie” and “Hubie” is
thinking his thoughts aloud.
2 min
3. As I read the story aloud and pay particular attention to the fact that Hubie has not
seen the new student he has only heard about him.
2 min 4. “Rumour has it”…. Point out the words used in the text to persuade how we feel
about Butch Pounder.

2 min 5. Discuss how the character Hubie had talked himself into not wanting to go to school
and list the reasons why?

2 min 6. Discuss Hubie’s actions to protect himself. Discuss his emotions and behaviour.

10 min Lesson conclusion: (How will you summarise the learning and relate it to the lesson
objectives?) Discuss why it is important to make our judgement based on our
experiences.
 Negative thoughts can escalate out of proportion.

Students will write a text that describes how they feel when they come to school.

Lesson Evaluation:
(Reflect on the lesson. What worked? What did not work? What would you change? Why?)
What worked – The students and I worked on the floor. I felt the informal approach created a connection with the
students, and I could maintain their focus. The students liked the story. They were engaged in the story and eager
to answer questions. After the story, we moved to a table where they started to write their text but we did not
finish.

What didn’t work - Due to a change in schedule, the lesson was rushed and could not be completed satisfactorily.
However, it will continue Friday. Friday will be a 5-minute recall of events in the story then the students will
engage in writing a reflective text about how they feel when they come to school.

What would I change – For this 23-minute lesson I would not include the written text, or I would continue it
another day during the week? Also, I would have selected a more appropriate book for the time I had.
