❍ Test 7

Read the following passage and answer the questions.

Rice is low-fat and high in energy, and you can mix it with just about anything to make a wide variety
of tasty nutritious dishes. Ask anyone from any country in the world to tell you their favourite rice
recipe and you will get a wide selection, ranging from sushi in Japan to risottos in northern Italy.

Rice is closely connected to the culture of many societies. Hindu and Buddhist religions use rice as
a religious offering. Burmese folklore uses rice as a central part of their creation story; the gods gave
the first people of Burma rice seeds and directed them to Burma, where the rice would grow well.
Chinese myth tells how, after severe floods, there was nothing to eat and the people were starving.
One day they saw a dog coming across the fields, and hanging onto the dogs tail were bunches of long
yellow seeds. The seeds grew into rice and the people survived.

The demand for rice is growing steadily, with consumption stretching beyond the traditional rice
growing areas in Asia. You can find rice fields in Europe, Latin America and Australia. However,
Asia is still the biggest rice producer, accounting for 90% of the world’s production and consumption
of rice.

Rice is a staple food for many countries. As the world population increases, can rice keep up to meet
growing demands? Rice production has to be raised by at least 70% over the next three decades. The
area devoted to rice cultivation cannot grow so much international research is being done to find ways
of growing rice on less land.

1 Name two qualities of rice.

a) ………....................................………… b) ………............................………………

Picking teams

When we pick teams in the playground,

Whatever the game might be,
There’s always somebody left until last
And usually it’s me.

I stand there looking hopeful

And tapping myself on the chest,
But the captains pick the others first,
Starting, of course, with the best.

Maybe if teams were sometimes picked

Starting with the worst,
Once in his life a boy like me
Could end up being first!

- Allan - Ahlberg

❍ Test 15
Read the following passage and answer the questions
The silence of the Reference Library was broken only by an occasional cough now and then by the
scarcely audible sound of pages being turned over. There were about twenty people in the room, most
of them with their heads bent over their books. The assistant librarin who was in charge of the room
sat at a desk in one corner. She glanced at Prabath as he came in, then went on with her work.
5 Prabath had not been to this part of the library before. He walked around the room almost on tiptoe. He
was afraid that he would disturb the industrious readers with his heavy shoes. The shelves were filled
with thick volumes: dictionaries in many languages, encyclopaedias, atlases, biographies and other
works of reference. He found nothing that was likely to interest him, until he came to a small section
on photography, which was one of his hobbies. The books in this section were on a high shelf out of
his reach, so he had to fetch a small ladder in order to get one down. Unfortunately, as he was climbing
10 down the ladder, the book he had chosen slipped from his grasp and fell to the floor with a loud crash.
Twenty pairs of eyes looked up at him simultaneously annoyed by this unaccustomed disturbance.
Prabath felt himself go red as he picked up his book, which did not seem to have been damaged by
its fall.

15 He had just sat down when he found the young lady assistant standing alongside him. "You must
be more careful when you are handling these books," she said severely. Satisfied that she had done
her duty, she turned to go back to her desk. Then a sudden thought struck her. "By the way, how old
are you?", she asked Prabath. "Thirteen," he told her. "You're not allowed in here under the age of
fourteen, you know," the assistant said. "Didn't you see the notice on the door? Prabath shook his
2 0 head. He expected the assistant to ask him to leave. Instead, in a more kindly tone, she said, "Well,
never mind, but make sure that you don't disturb the other readers again, otherwise I shall have to ask
you to leave." Adapted by - Donn Byrne
