DESIGN DESCRIPTION

The hopper bin is used to store and discharge bulk solids of the final product. The hopper bin
is steel fabricated and oriented vertically. The hopper outlet is where the solid is being discharged. The
legs and steel supports serves as the stand for the hopper bin.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

From bucket conveyor, the solid is transported into the hopper bin and stored. The solid is then
discharged from its outlet into bulk containers or other transportation medium through gravity.

BASIS OF SELECTION

Hopper bins are capable of handling large amount of solids, particularly grainy and powder in
nature. Hopper bins are capable of maintaining storage conditions for various types of solids as well
as discharging it from the bin having the stored material controlled in terms of temperature and
moisture content.

MAJOR PARTS AND FUNCTIONS

Roof

Hopper Inlet

Outer Shell

Hopper Outlet

Leg Support
Part Function
Roof Used to cover the upper part of the hopper bin
Hopper Inlet Used for loading the solids into the hopper bin
Outer Shell Serve as the casing for storing the solids
Hopper Outlet It is where the solid is being discharged after
storage
Leg Support Used to stand the hopper in a vertical
arrangement

DATA AND ASSUMPTIONS

1. The mass of the solid to be stored is 10,000 kg
2. The bulk density of the solid is 1010 kg/m3
3. The bin diameter should be 60% higher than the hopper outlet diameter. (Bulk Solids Handling,
Woodcock and Mason, p. 185)
4. The effective internal friction angle is 60°

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS
1. The hopper bin outlet is conical in shape
2. The flow pattern is mass flow (m = 1)

DESIGN REQUIREMENTS

1. Height of the Storage Bin

2. Hopper Outlet Dimensions
3. Outlet Mass Flow Rate

DESIGN CALCULATIONS

1. Height of the Storage Bin

It can be calculate from the volume as follows:
m
V

10000 kg
V  9.9010 m3 (281 bushels)
kg
1010 3
m
From the Table:

Select 344 Bushels, from there:

Storage Bin Height = 20 feet (6.0976 m)
Bin Diameter = 6 feet (1.8293 m)
2. Hopper Outlet Dimensions
From the previous given:
Bin Diameter = 1.60 (Outlet Diameter)
Outlet Diameter = 1.8293 m / 1.60
Outlet Diameter = 1.1433 m

3. Outlet Mass Flow Rate

For a mass flow system, Johansson Equation is used:

(𝑫𝒈)
𝓶′ = 𝝆𝟎 𝑨√ ⁄𝟐(𝟏 + 𝒎)𝑻𝒂𝒏(𝜽)

(𝑫𝒈)
𝓶′ = 𝝆𝟎 𝑨√ ⁄𝟐(𝟏 + 𝒎)𝑻𝒂𝒏(𝜽)

θ = semi included angle of the hopper

m' =discharge rate (kg/s)

ρ0 = bulk density (kg/m3)

g = gravity acceleration (9.807 m/s2)

A = Cross Sectional Area of the Bin

D =Diameter of the Hopper Outlet
