PREFACE
Since 1994, Rwanda is a state with three official languages: Kinyarwanda (a national language
spoken by all Rwandans), French and English. As a trilingual state, Rwanda needs good linguistic
tools to use while handling official documents, rendering contents from one language to another,
preparing teaching materials, and sharing experiences with other communities. At the time being, a
Kinyarwanda-Kinyarwanda and a Kinyarwanda-French Dictionaries have been compiled by the
Rwandan National Institute of Scientific Research (IRST). However, only one attempt to compile a
Kinyarwanda-English was carried out by Geoffrey Rugege (PhD), a Professor of Linguistics at
Grambling University, when he published a Kinyarwanda-English in 2005.
After pointing out that the interaction between Rwandans and their guests from English-
speaking countries is a must, and noticing how quick the English language is becoming an
important language in our country, especially in education, the authors of this dictionary
concluded that materials that can facilitate communication should be put in place.
In your hands is a new attempt to the first Edition of a bilingual Kinyarwanda-English and
English-Kinyarwanda Dictionary by Emmanuel Habumuremyi and Claudine Uwamahoro both
members of Rwanda Community Net. This is a unique Dictionary of this kind in Rwanda because of
two reasons: before its conception in 2000, there was no other available dictionary of this kind to
satisfy the users’ needs. It is also the only Kinyarwanda-English dictionary published in a software
format to facilitate an easy word search for users.
This is the first step towards a future complete Kinyarwanda-English and English
Kinyarwanda dictionary. It is the result of a five-year collection of words from both English
and Kinyarwanda languages books, talks and media. The entries have been chosen from
literary texts, newspapers, speeches by Rwanda authorities and Internet.
As there is a need for good dictionaries to help users to find the right word at the right
time, the authors have thought of conceiving a Dictionary organized as follow:
- A brief introduction on the Kinyarwanda language;
- Kinyarwanda pronunciation;
- Kinyarwanda grammar in brief;
- Origin of words used in this dictionary
- List of abbreviations used in the dictionary;
- Bibliography;
- The dictionary itself.
iii
This dictionary intends to provide you with entries followed by their equivalents in the
target language and some examples in sentences. These entries are labelled: terms used in
general use with their synonyms, technical terms and the fields in which they are used.
Proverbs, idioms and expressions are provided to help the users to be accustomed to the
cultural content that will be emphasized as fully as the authors could it. This task will be
reinforced in the second edition which is under way.
This work provides not only equivalents of words but also helps both Kinyarwanda
and English learners to localize words in their cultural environments. Entries are illustrated by
examples from every day language in use. In addition, notes and comments on unusual words
or phrases are given as well as synonyms and antonyms.
I hope this will, at least partly, meet the Kinyarwanda and English learners’ needs and
serve as a bilingual-language reference work for teachers, tourists, translators and whoever
needs to strengthen his/her knowledge in both Rwandan and English culture.
Nevertheless, we all are conscious that the completion of such a project is not an easy
task. Some shortcomings and misuse of words can occur. The authors are waiting from the
users any comments, criticism and suggestions on this edition so as to improve the
forthcoming editions.
Finally, let us note that this dictionary is different from other Bantu dictionaries, whose
search of word is root-based. The present one is a lexemme-based dictionary because of its
first nature: to be an electronic bilingual dictionary. Based on your feedback, the authors think
that the second version will be improved and be a root-based for the sake of linguistics’ needs.

INTRODUCTION
About Kinyarwanda
The Rwandan language is known as “Kinyarwanda” by people. It is an important language of East
Central Africa. Besides being the national language of Rwanda, Kinyarwanda is probably, after
Kiswahili the second largest spoken language in the Bantu group. It is a sister dialect of Kirundi, the
national language of Burundi and Giha, a dialect spoken in Tanzania. Its speakers are perhaps more
than 20 million people.
It is the official language in the Republic of Rwanda, spoken by almost everyone in this country - with
over 8,000,000 speakers-and in the neighbouring countries. Apart from its speakers in Rwanda right
now, Burundi has around 7 million speakers of Kirundi who can understand Kinyarwanda very well.
Besides the Giha dialect speakers there are also ethnic Banyarwanda in Southern Uganda in the Kigezi
district known as Bafumbira. Other Kinyarwanda speakers are Banyamulenge in Southern Kivu and
ethnic Banyarwanda in Masisi and Rutshuro in Northern Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kinyarwanda belongs to the interlacustrine (Great Lakes) Bantu languages. There are a total of
approximately 20 million of native speakers of Kinyarwanda (cfr. Kimenyi Alexander for more
Information).
This language is part of the Bantu sub-group of the central branch of the Niger-Congo language
family. It is closely related to Kirundi, the language of Burundi. Kinyarwanda-Kirundi speakers
comprise the third largest group of all the Bantu languages.
As Ernest Haddon says, "the word Bantu is derived from a common root found in this group of
African languages meaning people," recognizable in Kinyarwanda as abantu. "The Bantu group includes some
hundreds of languages and dialects stretching right across Africa, mostly south of the Equator." Johnston (Sir H. H.
Johnston, A Comparative Study of the Bantu and Semi-Bantu Languages) thinks that the Bantu language was
evolved south or south-east of Lake Chad, and may date from 400-300 B.C. Others would place the
focus of origin nearer to the White Nile or even east of it. Bantu languages are characterized by the
absence of grammatical Gender and a system of Class Prefixes. Gender is dealt within the main text.
Kinyarwanda is a rich language with many words having similar meanings, yet fine shades of thought.
Two words may be translated by the same English word and yet they may be used interchangeably. So
strive to ferret out the exact meaning of words. Also, remember that each Kinyarwanda word does
not have an exact English equivalent and likewise, do not expect to find a Kinyarwanda equivalent for
every English word. Another thing to remember here is that Kinyarwanda vocabulary has been most
influenced by Swahili and Arabic (through culture, trade and military), Geramany and Latin (through
politics and Religion), and more recently by French and English (through education, science and
technology).
A Guide to Kinyarwanda Pronunciation
UKO IKINYARWANDA KIVUGWA (KINYARWANDA PRONUNCIATION)
The following text is intended to introduce you to the general characteristics of the pronunciation of
Kinyarwanda. Because of dialect situation, some variations in pronunciation will be heard. Please,
remember that an acceptable pronunciation can be attained through careful attention to the speech
of native speaker.
Like all other languages, Kinyarwanda is made of a certain set of sounds. Its spelling is based on the
Latin alphabet. The consistent relationship between sounds and spelling lacks. Since this language is a
tonal one, variations of pitch of voice as well as length of its syllables will completely change the
meaning. The result is that written Kinyarwanda is often inadequate and misleading representation of
the spoken language. Remember that each written letter is pronounced, unless it is a part of the
consonant combinations.
Whenever you want to pronounce Kinyarwanda well, listen carefully even when you do not
understand. Learn your pronunciation FROM A NATIVE SPEAKER, NOT A FOREIGNER. From the
beginning spend time daily with a Rwanda if you can find one and or try to engage in simple
conversation, with him/her correcting you.
B. Inyajwi (Vowels)
Normally, if you read written Kinyarwanda you notice that there are five vowel phonemes (distinctive
sounds) represented by the graphs a, e, i, o, and u. These approximately have Latin, Spanish or
Italian values. There are important differences between English and Kinyarwanda vowels. For one, the
Kinyarwanda vowels are sometimes short or long and are not diphthongized as are the comparable
English ones. With these differences in mind, note the following comparisons:
A special caution should be mentioned: Do not tend to neutralize unaccented vowels. Each vowel
should be given its full value whether accented or not.
“Although Kinyarwanda has both long vowels and short vowels as well as high tones or no tones on
syllables, the official orthography does not mark vowel length and melody. Only the context can tell
the reader which word was meant. Written texts are thus ambiguous even to native speakers. Thus
x
the written words gusura can stand either for [gusura] 'to fart' or (gusuura) 'to visit', gutaka for
either (gutaka) 'to scream' or (gutaaka) 'to decorate', ino can stand for either (ino) 'toe' or (inó)
'here', inda for (inda) 'stomach' or (indá) 'louse', umuryango for (umuryaango) 'family' or
(umuryáango) and ikirere for (ikireere) 'banana leaf' or (ikiréeré) 'air space'” (cfr. Kimenyi online).

u
/uu/ umuntu (person), umwuga (job)
Note: A vowel at the end of a word followed by a word starting with a vowel often follows a pattern of
omission in common speech, though the orthography remains the same. See the following example from
Cyprien Rugamba's song:
e.g. 'Umwami ubasumba aratsinze. Atsimbuye icyaha araganje...' can be pronunced as 'Umwam ubasumb aratsinz.
Atsimbuy icyah araganje...'
C. Ingombajwi (Consonants)

1. The letters p, t, f, k, g are voiceless stops, similar to English; but they can be aspirated or
unaspirated. That is, speaking the first two words below would release a burst of air that would
rustle a sheet of paper held in front of the speaker's mouth. For the second set of words, the
sheet of paper would remain still.
A. Generally, while pronouncing /p/, /t/, and /f/ one can hear the aspiration. They look like to be
followed by the sound /h/:
Examples:
papa [p(h)a-p(h)a] 'papa'
ipasi [i-p(h)aâ-si] ‘iron’
ipata [i-p(h)a-t(h)â] ‘hinge’, ‘butt-hinge’
itabi [i-t(h)âa- βi] ‘tabacco’
ifu [i-f(h)u] ‘flour’
B. The letters k, g followed by /o/, /u/ they change in /kw/ and /gw/. (See /w/ below).
Examples:
kugura /kwu-gwu-ra/ (to buy)
kogosha /kwo-gwo-sha/ (to shave)
C. The letters k, g followed by /i/and /e/ sounds as if they are followed by /y/
Examples:
ikigega [i-k(y)i-g(y)e-ga] ‘attic, store house’
kera [k(y)e-ra] ‘formerly in the past’
igi [i-g(y)i] ‘egg’
2. The letter b has a very soft sound –phonetically presented by /β/ -with the lips barely touching
unless it is preceeded by /m/ (that is when it is a part of clusters made of the combinations of
consonants). At this time it is quite heard. It does not have the rather explosive quality that it
has in English.
Examples: ikibabi /ikyiβaβi/ 'leaf'
imbaraga /imbaraga/ ‘force’
3. The sound /d/ as English voiced stops, but they are imploded, that is, in
their pronunciation the air is sucked into the mouth as they are released.
Example: data /daa-t(h)â/ 'father'
4. The sounds /v/ /s/ /z/ are pronounced as in English. /s/ is never pronounced as /z/
Example: ivi /i-vi/‘knee’
ivuriro /i-vuu-ri-ro/‘hospital’
umusare /u-mu-saa-re/ 'navy'
umusore /u-mu-so-re/'young man'
gusasa /gwu-sa-sa/ 'make the bed'
umwiza /u-mŋii-za/'the good'
amazi /a-maa-zi/‘water’
5. The sounds /m/, /n/, when they occur before other consonants, /m/ and /n/ are never
pronounced separately as a syllable as for some case in English.
Example: inyuma /i-nyu-ma/ 'at the back'
umpundu /i-mpuu-ndu/ ‘a kind of monkey’
imvaho /i-mvaa-ho/ ‘truth’
xii
umuntu /u-mu-nt(h)u/ 'a person, human being'
imboga /i-mbo-ga/ 'vegetable'
indege /i-ndee-gye/ 'airplane'
6. The sound /ny/ as the /ñ/ in Spanish España (Espagne), or approximately as the segment ni in
English 'onion':
Example: inyanya /i-ñaa-ña/'tomato'
inyoni /i-ño-ni/ 'bird'
7. The sound /ŋ/ represented by ng in writing as in ‘sing’ only exists in Kinyarwanda before other
consonants: ingoma as ‘nŋg’ in finger inka as ‘nk’ in think /thiŋk/ gutekereza.
Example: ingoma /i-nŋgo-ma/ ‘drum’
inka /i- ŋk(h)a/'cow, cattle'.
8. The letter c always has the sound of /č/ as the first sound in English 'cheek' and 'church', not as
in 'car':
Example: cukura /ču-kwu-ra/ 'dig'
bucece /βu-če-če/ 'quietly'
9. The sound /j/ is not pronounced as in English 'job', but as a very soft sound, like /z/ in azure.
A fairly accurate pronunciation can be achieved by pronouncing it from the native speaker.
Example: ejo /e-jo/ 'yesterday, tomorrow'
ijana /i-ja-na/ 'a hundred'
10. /y/ as in 'you'. (It is used for the combination with other consonants (see below)). It is never a
vowel like y in 'baby' or 'by'.
Example: uyu /u-yu/ 'this'
12. The sound /r/ has a slight strill sound. The tongue should just flip against the roof of the mouth.
Kinyarwanda /r/ is quite different from the English one; it is similar to the Spanish tapped /r/
as in pero 'but' orclaro 'of course':
Example: amakuru /a-ma-kwu-ru/ 'news'
urabeho /u-ra-βe-ho/ 'good bye'
13. The sound /l/ is used mainly in words of foreign origin that is borrowings. However, in many books
where one might expect ri, li is written. You can find these especially in Proper nouns. But the
sound is the same.
Example: telefone /t(h)e-le-foo-ni/ 'telephone'
Kamali /k(h)a-maa-li/ (name of a person)
Kigali /kyi-ga-li/ (name of a town)
But Ruhengeri /ru-hee-ngje-ri/ (name of a town)
xiii
16. Letters q and x do not exist in Kinyarwanda.
17. Sounds like /æ/, /θ/, /δ/, /x/, /q/ do not exist in Kinyarwanda.
xiv
pw /pk/ gucapwa /gwu-ča-pka/ 'to be printed'
py /pky/ gupyoka /gwu-pkyoo-ka/ 'to be grazed, to be scarped; leave quick '
ts /ts/ umutsi /umutsî/ 'blood vessel, ligament, tendon '
tsw /tskw/ kotswa /kwootskwa/ '(for a person) to be cauterized; (meat) to be grilled'
vw /vg/ guhovwa /gwuuhoovga/ 'for a new beehive) to be exploded by bees '
vy /vgy/ zahovye /zahoovgye/ 'they sucked the honey from cells of a honeycomb '
mv /mv/ imvura /imvûra/ 'rain'
mvw /mvg/ kumvwa /kwûumvga/
mvy /mvgy/ yahomvomvye /yaahôomvoomvgye/ 'he/she said the stupid things/insanities'
mvyw /mvg/ urahomvomvywa (n'iki?) /u-ra-hôo-mvoo-mvga/ 'why do you want to say the
stupidity?'
zw /zgw/ guhazwa /gwu-haa-zgwa/ 'to receive Holy Communion'
nz /nz/ inzu /i-nzu/‘house’
nzw /nzgw/ kuganzwa /kwu-gaa-nzgwa/ 'to be defeated /dominated'
tw /tkw/ umutwe /u-mu-tkwê/ ‘head’
ty /tky/ ityazo /i-tkyâa-zo/ 'a stone used to sharpen '
nt /nt(h)/ intare /i-nt(h)â-re/ ‘lion’
ntw /nt(h )kw/ Intwaro /i-nt(h)kwâa-ro/ 'weapon'
nty /ntk(h)y/ Intyoza /i-nt(h)kyoô-za/ 'eloquant'
We ca notice that:
wherever the sound /y/ is found it is pronounced:
/ñ/ after /m/, /n/
/ky/ after /p/, /s/, /t /, /c/.
/gy/ after /d/, /l/, /r/, /v/, /b/, /j/.
Note:
One can find /bg/, instead of /bw/ in the name Kabgayi. It was also used in old Bible
and books.
1Phonemes pertaining to a feature of speech that extends over more than a single speech
sound.
xv
The suprasegmental phonemes indicate syllables with height which is often unpredictable. But you do
not worry. It is like in English! You know, it is often not possible to know where to place the stress in
unfamiliar word. In Kinyarwanda, it can be helpful to remember that one must learn the nouns
carefully associated with their height at the same time. This could help. In this course, the syllable
with emhasis will be shown.
There are at least two intonation patterns for questions in Kinyarwanda, one used in reading
questions or in emphatic contexts, another in non-emphatic or normal contexts. Compare and practice
the following examples:

ORIGIN OF KINYARWANDA WORDS USED IN
THIS DICTIONARY
This dictionary was written based on word collected and gathered in a corpus. The
organization “Rwanda Community Net ” considers corpus usage as a main method in
language research since it is based on real evidence. Rwanda Community Net has in
its plan to continually monitoring and researching how Kinyarwanda language is
evolving using this method. The main reason to opt for this processes was that the
organization’s research target to see how frequent a word is used in official and
everyday talks.
In linguistics, a corpus (plural corpora) or text corpus is a large and structured set of
texts (now usually electronically stored and processed).8 The Rwanda Community Net
Kinyarwanda language corpus is a collection of official and non-official texts chosen
from the written language presented in electronic form. It provides the evidence of
how Kinyarwanda language is used in real situations, from which the authors of
Kinyarwanda-English dictionary draw the accurate and meaningful dictionary entries.
By analyzing the corpus and using special software, the Kinyarwanda-English and
English-Kinyarwanda dictionary team can see words in context and find out how new
words and senses are emerging, as well as spotting other trends in usage, spelling,
Kinyarwanda dialects, etc.
xxvii
Below is a typical way of viewing the results of a search of the corpus for a word
“umwana” that appear 1298 times in our corpus:
The mentioned corpus represents all types of Kinyarwanda, from literary works and
specialist expressions to everyday newspapers and magazines and from Nyirarumaga
and his followers’ words, as they reflected especially in Alexis Kagame and and
Bernardin Muzungu’s works, to the language of sitting rooms, emails, and websites.
The corpus now contains over 120,000 words of real everyday Kinyarwanda usage.
Rwanda Community Net endeavor to carefully make selection and development of the
contents to include in its corpus which means that it is a resource unlike any other
anywhere in the Rwanda. We are keeping track of our language. As meanings of words
and phrases change and so do spellings, despite the existence of 'standard' or 'correct'
spelling. A strength of our corpus is that it contains not only published works in which
the text has been edited (and made to conform to standard spellings and grammar) but
also unpublished and unedited writing like emails and weblogs, so tracking even informal
usage of the Kinyarwanda will be an essential part of tracking our the language as a
whole. At the end, this will help us in developing our language database while keeping its
relation with other languages.
xxviii
Commonest words in our Corpus
Most
ency
used
xxix
Many of the most frequently used words are short 'function words' whose main
purpose is to join other, longer words rather than determine the meaning of a
sentence. As we are often more interested in the frequency of 'content words' let us
see the table bellow for noun occurrence in our corpus:
NOUNS VERBS
xxx
As we can see in the table above, the commonest nouns are Rwanda, ingingo, and inama,
followed by igihugu, abantu and Leta. Notice that many of the Kinyarwanda most used
words are very common in speeches by high ranked authorities, others have more than
one meaning.

Grammar note:
In Kinyarwanda, all nouns –except proper nouns- are placed in one class (inteko) or another,
usually with a class prefix (indanganteko).
Urugero (Example): Umugabo munini aje hano (A big man comes here).
mu in umugabo is a class prefix for Noun Class 1.
Umunyarwanda (a single person whose motherland is Rwanda) Noun Class 1.
Abanyarwanda (two or more persons of this country) Noun Class 2.
Ikinyarwanda (the Rwandan language, the Kinyarwanda) Noun Class 7.
Notice that words corresponding to English the or a are not necessary nor is some.
Urugero: Mpa amata (Bring some milk)
Nabuze indangamuntu (I lost the identity card).
The verb is incomplete without the pronominal concord representing the subject noun.
ii
When required to represent the object of the verb the pronominal concord objective infix is
inserted immediately before the verb root or stem.
Urugero: uramuzi (you know him). [mu represents him]
iii
In Rwandan culture (traditions), it is not polite to walk by someone without addressing him any kind of
greeting. It is customary to exchange greetings before engaging in conversations or whatever in any
other activities. Even a stranger or an inferior has to be greeted. Normally older people or those
considered to be of higher status are supposed to be greeted first. In most cases titles would
accompany the greetings. A person who passes other people without any sign of recognition is seen as
somebody who is not a Rwandan. Any greeting is obligatory. They greet by giving and shaking hand,
embracing but not kissing. The frequency of kissing is new in Rwanda. Remember that people take
greetings seriously as they help to mountain good relationships among people.
According to Jean de Dieu Niyonteze's "mémoire" (dissertation paper), the Rwandan greetings has
two forms: Interrogative and wishing greetings.
A. Interrogative greetings
The greeting in the interrogative form are addressed to one's interlocutor to get information about
his health. In fact, health is the common theme in the interrogative greetings:
*(M)Uracyasunikaho? Which literally means "Do you still push your way through life?", that is,
Are you in good health?
Note:
* M in parentheses shows the respect one has in somebody.
In other way you use U second person singular.
(M)Uracyatera akuka? "Do you still breathe ?": Are you still alive?
(M)Urakoma? This form is familiar one. A superior may address it to an inferior, but the
reverse would be seen as a lack of politeness. It literally means "Do you speak?". Thus it
means Are you still alive?
Ni amahoro? "It is peace?" Do you live in peace?
(M)uraho? This form literally means " Are you there?" that is Are you alive?
Note:
Uraho is a pass-key form because it is used by anyone to anybody. One may address it
to a friend, an acquaintance, a stranger, ...It is directed to anyone of sex, age, or
social position.
B. Wishing Greetings
The current themes are the cow and the child because in traditional Rwanda, to have a lot of cows
and many children was considered as a sign of wealth and power:
iv
Other themes are centered around the male parent, the wife and the husband. The greeter wishes
the greeted person to have a father, a wife, or a husband. When he wishes the greeted person to
have wife or husband, this depends on the sex of the greeted person. But it may happen that the
greeted person is already married; in this case, the verb "kugira" (to have) means "to keep long as
possible".
Gira so (Note that Gira nyoko does not exist: In young generation sayings this can be an
insult (=to sleep with your mother).
Gira umugabo.
Gira umugore.
There is other forms of recent innovation which is result of the coming in of the christian churches.
That form is "Yezu akuzwe" (May Jesus be praised) and "Yesu ashimwe" (May Jesus be thanked).
Yezu akuzwe and Amashyo are the common formulas of wishing greetings. The answer to any
greeting-be it a wishing greeting or an interrogative greeting- is "Yego" (Yes).
Example:
Muraho? Answer:Yego.
Gira umugabo/umugore (may you have a husband/a wife).
Yego or Ndamushimye (I thank you for him/her) or
Ndamukugize (I make you my husband/wife).
* However, there are some but few forms of greetings which require forms of reply other than
"Yego."
Example:
Amakuru (ki)?: What's the news? Answer: Ni meza: They are good.
Murakoma?: Are you still breathing? Answer: Yego or Murakoma namwe?: Yes or
Are you still breathing, you too?
Note:
It is a common practice to provide positive replies to any kind of greetings, but it may
happen that negative replies occur especially when the respondent does not really feel
well.
Other forms include God, who is for Rwandans the protector and the provider of all chances:
Mwabonye Imana yugurura?: Did you see God opening the entrance of the gate?
Mwabonye Imana yugurura?: Did you see God opening the door?
Mwabonye Matara atabara?: Did you see Light liberating you?
People look at the night with suspicion and fear because the night is full of traps and there is a
possibility to be defeated by it. That is why it is a great good luck for Banyarwanda to be still alive in
the morning.
Wiriwe? This greeting is used after midday. Its equivalence in English can be Good
afternoon.
Wiriwe ute? How have you spent your day?
Wiriranywe amahoro? Did you spend the day in peace?
3.3. OTHERS
vi
Example:
Hand shaking is used a lot. In some areas of Tanzania people kneel down or bow, or bend down a
little as a sign of respect. In some areas children bow their heads for a blessing from elders. In other
areas elders bow their heads for a touch from children when being greeted. You need to observe
what is going on around .In this culture we have prolonged greetings. People take greetings
seriously as they help to mountain good relationships among people.
vii
viii
Rwandan people use numbers in various situations: counting the amount of money they have on a bank
account, finding out the number of cows a herder have, measuring the width of the farmer’s field,
and so on.
Kinyarwanda numbers are of either Bantu or Arabic (in telling time) origin. Numbers of Bantu origin
take adjectival prefixes; those borrowed from Arabic take none. (Note that although "cumi" is of
Bantu origin, it does not take a prefix).
Ukubara Counting
After 10,000 it is common to let the number preceded by "ibihumbi: ibihumbi cumi," ten thousand.
By doing so, confusion is avoided. Note that: "ibihumbu cumi na kimwe" is 11,000, while "ibihumbi
cumi na rimwe" is 10,001, and "igihumbi na cumi na rimwe" is 1,011.
In compound numbers, only the units, or the tens when no unit follows, are preceded by NA: cumi na
gatanu (15); mirongwitatu n'icyenda (39), maganabiri na mirongwine na kane (244), maganabiri
mirongitandatu (260), ibihumbi icumi na maganatanu na mirongwirindwi na kabiri (10,572), ibihumbi
icumi na maganatanu na mirongwirindwi (10,570), ibihumbi ijana na mirongwine na maganane na cumi
(140,410), ibihumbi maganatatu na mirongwitandati maganatanu na mirongwitandatu na rimwe
(360,561).
When a number modifies a noun, the Bantu number stem takes the appropriate adjectival prefix:
umuntu umwe one person
imitego ibiri two traps
amasuka atatu three hoes
ibitanda bine four beds
amezi atanu five months
ibibazo umunani eight questions
Also:
Note that from "umunani", the number has the form of a noun.
B. Ibinyacumi Tens
10 icumi
20 makumyabiri (literally two tens)
30 mirongwitatu (literally three tens)
40 mirongwine (literally four tens)
50 mirongwitanu (literally five tens)
60 mirongwitandatu
70 mirongwirindwi
80 mirongwinani
90 mirongwicyenda
The pattern used with the twenties is applied to all the thirties – nineties
D. Hundreds Ibinyajana
100 ijana
200 maganabiri (literally two hundreds)
300 maganatatu (literally three hundreds)
400 maganane (literally four hundreds)
500 maganatanu (literally five hundreds)
600 maganatandatu
x
F. Thousands Ibinyagihumbi
1000 igihumbi
2000 ibihumbi bibiri
3000 ibihumbi bitatu
4000 ibuhumbi bine
5000 ibihumbi bitanu
6000 ibihumbi bitandatu
7000 ibihumbi birindwi
8000 ibihumbi umunani
9000 ibihumbi icyenda
xi
Ordinal numbers are expressed with wa, ba, rya, cya… phrase plus the cardinal number. "First" take
special forms:
Icya mbere 1st
Icya kabiri 2nd
Icya gatatu 3rd

The Rwandan day (umunsi) is really two twelve-hour slots starting at sunrise and again at sunset as it
is for Bantu language. So 08:00 is saa mbiri (the second hour) - add the words za mugitondo or za
nijoro to express daytime or night-time. From this, there is a difference of 6 hours between the
Kinyarwanda and European methods of counting time. Kinyarwanda time like Biblical time begins with
sunrise, reckoned as 6 a.m.: thus 7 a.m., one hour after sunrise, is the first hour of daylight, saa
moya. The counting continues up to 6 p.m., the 12th hour, saa kumi n'ebyiri. Then the hours of the
night are counted in the same way, 7 p.m. being saa moya, until 6 a.m., saa kumi n'ebyiri.
To avoid confusion, a word such as za mugitondo, of the morning; z'amanywa, of the daytime; za
nyuma ya saa sita, of the afternoon; za nimugoroba, of the late afternoon before sunset; or za
nijoro, of the night (the hours of darkness) may be added to indicate which hour you mean:
saa 12 za mugitondo, 6 o'clock in the morning;
saa 12 za nimugoroba, 6 o clock in the evening.
xiv
C.3. You always tell the hour plus the halfhour. There are two ways of telling the halfhour: n'igice or
na mirongwitatu/n'iminota mirongwitatu.
Saa mbiri n'igice half past eight
Saa mbili na mirongwitatu (not common).
N'a cumi n'itanu a quarter, is used when telling a quarter to or past the hour:
Saa nane na na cuminitanu a quarter past two
Saa moyaa ibura cuminitanu a quarter to seven.
C.4. Iminota, minute, is used when telling minutes to or past the hour:
Saa tatu n'iminota itanu five minutes past nine
Saa tanu n'iminota makumyabiri twenty minutes past eleven
Saa cyenda zibura iminota icumi ten minutes to three
Saa kumi n'imwe zibura iminota makumyabiri n'itanu twenty-five minutes to five
C.5. Zibura means "less, short of, lacking", zirengaho means "plus"
The European way of saying 2:35, 6:30, 8:45, etc. is heard among Kinyarwanda speakers
nowadays, especially where some kind of timetable is involved. Thus one may hear:
Saa munani n'iminota mirongwitatu n'itanu
xv
C.6. As it has been stated above, the day is considered to start at dawn (not midnight).
Time is thus counted with the first hour considered to be the hour of dawn. Thus time would
be read as follows:
xvi
Mbere y’uko amasaha yogera mu Bantu, Abanyarwanda bari bafite ibihe byagereranywaga nayo. (Before the
expension of modern time usage, Rwandan people had different day division that can be compared to the modern
time).

Note that the cardinal or ordinal numbers are used but remember that the use of cardinal numbers in
dates is uncommon:
Itariki cumi n’icyenda Nyakanga 1994 July 19th,1994.
Itariki ya gatandatu Mata 1994 April 6th, 1994.
It is sometimes possible (when the century is not in doubt) simply to say umwaka wa mirongwinani
n'ine (For example 1940).
