Anggarwati, Marisa Lidia. 2015. Identification of Students’Misconception in

Stoichiometry on 10th Grade of MAN 2 Kota Batu Using Two-Tier
Multiple Choice Diagnostic Instrument. Undergraduate Thesis, Chemistry
Department, Faculty of Mathematics and Science, State University of
Malang. Supervisors: (1) Muntholib, S.Pd., M.Si., (2) Eli Hendrik Sanjaya,

Key Word: misconception, stoichiometry, two-tier

Chemistry is consist of complex concepts so that understanding one of

concept will be influence for other concept. Students will understand of complex
concept if individual supporting concept has been understood. Stoichiometry is a
basic concept. Misconception in stoichiometry will be influence for the other
concepts. Therefore, it is necessary identify to know students' misconception in
stoichiometry. One way diagnostic test to know students' misconception is a two-
tier multiple choice diagnostic instrument. This instrument consists of two tier, the
first tier consists of question and alternative answers, while the second tier
consists of reason why students choose answer in the first tier. The purpose of this
research are (1) to know the level of understanding stoichiometry, and (2) to know
students’misconception on stoichiometry.
The Research uses descriptive research method with qualitative approach.
The source of data are X.1 and X.2 of MAN 2 Kota Batu. Data were collected by
using opened test, interview techniques, and two-tier multiple choice diagnostic
instrument.
The Results show that the level of understanding are: the basic laws of
chemistry is high (73.84%), the chemical reaction is high (78.70%), atomic mass
relative and molecular mass relative is high (62.70%), the concept of mole is
enough (53.94%), molar mass is low (34.36%), molar volume is high (78.70%),
the empirical formula is enough (49.07%), the molecular formula is enough (53,
70%), percent composition high (93.52%), and the limiting reagents is high
(95.06%). The results show the students' misconceptions are: the mass of product
is smaller than the mass of reactant because gas formed in the end of reaction or
the reaction formed a ash, The mass of product is bigger than the mass of reactant
because formed a new substances, the mass ratio of the elements in the compound
is not always fixed, the total amount of gas volume before reaction equal with the
total amount of gas volume after reaction, the amount of particle doesn’t depend
on mole, Ionic compound consist of molecular unit, the total amount of ions in 1
mole of ionic compound as many as Avogadro’s number, molar mass doesn’t has
unit, the calculation of volume doesn’t depend on mole, the empirical formulas is
types of atoms making up the compound, the molecular formulas is ratio of
atomic number of each elements, and the molecular formula is a ratio of atomic
mass relative.
