Warm Up
one simple guide
one simple warm up
The warm-up, rather than the practice session, is a sort of a “reminder” of how we have to play. This “reminder” acquires a
significant role since it shapes proper practice/playing and will not allow time negatively affect our sound quality.
1. Air
The air must go nowhere else than the lungs, neither the diaphragm nor the back nor our bellies. If we don’t let our body do
the job properly we will create tension which is not necessary.
Exercise
The purpose of this exercise is the process of relaxed inhalation-exhalation. We need to observe how our respiratory system
works without intervening into this process.
Take big breaths, relax , no pressure > keep in mind the process of relaxed inhalation and exhalation. Lots of people focus
totally on exhalation thus ignoring the inhalation : a correct exhalation is when we freely let the air out rather than pressing it
out, thus having a beautiful sound as an outcome.
A. Slow (more or less q = 60) > 4 times big breath, let the air to leave without pressure,
trying each inhalation to be bigger. Don't count, just inhale and exhale !
4 times:
q = 60, 4 beats inhalation> 8 expiry
q = 60, 4 beats inhalation> 12 expiry (every time ask yourself "I am relaxed"?)
q = 60, 4 beats inhalation> 16 expiry
C. When we feel relaxed we repeat exercise B but now holding the instrument in hands , exhaling inside it and remaining
relaxed as before. We do not want to produce sound but simply to feel the resistance of our instrument while remaining
relaxed.
In each breath you take try to observe how your body works. Do not impose any movement, just observe.
1
2. Sound
With trombone
Exercise 1
We wish to achieve the same relaxed flow of air as in exercises A,B & C. We must always bear in mind the desirable sound to
be produced, as well as listening to the notes before playing them. Solfege is what is going to help us in terms of correctly
pitched playing, even overcoming any technical difficulties.
After the fermata take your time for proper inhalation, without the pressure of the metronome. Focus on the fermata note and
beware not to push it but let it end freely, when “itelf” wants to end.
We start without articulation (tongue), start the note with air (Ha).

Exercise 2
Start again without using the tongue, fully legato. During this exercise, emphasise on your hand to be relaxed but also
stopping in the right position. Do not forget the relaxed breathing process, after every fermata let the note end by itself, take
your time for the next inhalation and carry on. We do not push the air out, we just flow it out freely. Play at a comfortable
medium dynamic (mf) pursuing rich sound.

Tips for all exercises, as well as for daily practice :
Periodically, we use our mouthpiece just to blow, without producing sound (buzz) but only listening to the next
part of the performing exercise in our head as well as observing our air flow.
- Do you have continuous air flow? (Hear the air flow when exiting the mouthpiece)
- Do I have continuous air flow ? (listen to the air flow coming out from the mouthpiece)
Without buzzing and without being bothered if the air ends before the part of the exercise is over. It’s normal for
the air to end very fast.
Pay great attention to the air, we do not wish the air flow to be anyhow pushed during the warm up process. Bear
in mind to be perfect in pitch, listen to the notes and always remember the quality of sound you wish to achieve.

Exercise 2a
A nice variation of the exercise 2 for trombone with valve or bass trombone. This exercise can help relaxing your lips after a
hard and tiring day. Observe your sound and try to have the same sound quality throughout all the register since in the case
of the bass trombone a thick sound must be the goal in your head. Do not be impatient or rush to perform the exercise but fill
in the instrument with air properly. It should be noted that those who can’t reach very low in the register must repeat this
specific exercise daily with the aim of getting one note lower per day.
Today might be F, tomorrow will be E. Be patient !
We use the valve throughout the exercise, trying to play every phrase legato with a single breath, without caring if an
acceleration occurs towards the end of the exercise.

Exercise 4
Legato exercises, slurs, notes without the use of tongue. Flexibility !
Once more, emphasize on the air and how you release it. We must think of the air as if playing a long sustained note as well
as internally listening to the desired sound of the exercise in our head. Sing inside your head the notes, try to listen to them
before playing.
The air must not “play” the notes, neither “falling” nor “rising” in relation to the exercise. We do not wish the air to follow the
direction of the line of the example below.
example
? ˙ w bœ œ œ bw
b˙ bœ
The air must have its own direction and a continuous flow without being affected by the exercise, as shown in the line below
the example.
example
? ˙ w bœ œ œ bw
b˙ bœ
Beware of the sound we have inside our head. If there is even a slight tonal deviation that does not allow us sing the
exercise PERFECTLY in tune, then our body and especially our lips, will try to “fix” the exercise for us. This will result in
pressure, tension and the production of poor rather than rich sound.
this is how you count the fermata, 1 and 2 time for big breath

Don't forget taking big breaths. If you listen to your inhalation it means that there is a sort of tension inside your throat.
Always pursue nice sound throughout all register !
From now on we can start the phrases with the use of tongue (articulation). In the beginning of every phrase we use the
tongue and pronounce “Tu” or “To”, like spelling words containing the same syllable. Everyone is different, so find your own

Exercise 6
The exercise 6 (a,b,c,d,e) is until D of the highest octava.
We continue with flexibility exercises, we do nothing different than what we said during the previous exercises.
Take big-relaxed breaths and release the air freely rather than pushing it out. Focus on the moment you release the air: do
you actually release it or you think that you are doing so ? Many times we think that we do stuff but we actually don’t.
Observe : when a phrase is about to end the air must also end, then we have more space for big breaths !
Listen to the notes very carefully, we must be in tune !

Exercise 6e
Don’t rush and try to play in every position with a single breath. If you cannot do so, take a fast breath and keep going. Don’t
try to impose any fast movement to your lips. In such a case you create tension in your face muscles which is not desirable.
We wish to have free lips that will be able to move in the tempo we have in our heads. We don’t accidentally stimulate the lips
to move but we send them the proper moving order which comes from our head/ears.
Imagine being wrong in tune (ears) = wrong tune = muscle tension = harder to perform the exercise = bad sound quality
If we are correct in tune (ears) = correct pitch = right order in the lips = performing the exercise in an easy going way =
beautiful sound !

Exercise 7
While playing high notes someone might think: “if I push a bit it will come” or “if I push using my belly will be fine”. This is
WRONG. Everything we play results from the coordination between the air that we blow out and the vibration of our lips. If
we blow the air slowly we realize that that the lips are relaxed without any pressure. If we blow the air in a fast way we
observe that our lips react and tighten by themselves. Did you tell them to tighten !? No! They just reacted to the air you
blew out.
Following a similar philosophy we also play at the high register of the instrument. We send fast air out and the vibration
on the lips reacts to it. This is how we achieve coordination between air-vibration of the lips !
WARNING : This is a general analysis of what happens. It needs work and patience to achieve the proper result. During
the warm up, try to be relaxed and be aware of the air flow !

It’s about time to activate the tongue. The tongue, as we all know, is a muscle. Each of us knows how to talk but we don’t
“say” to our tongue how to articulate the words. From a tender age, we learned to articulate via listening to how people
talked around us, doing just a mere immitation.
Following a similar philosophy, we articulate, we don't “say” to our tongue what to do but we articulate in the way our ears
listen to the articulation itself and our tongue just follows.
WARNING : In terms of using the tongue, we speak about neither staccato nor legato.
Exercise 8a
In the next exercise we articulate very carefully. Our tongue must touch the air flow creating a very small gap. Think of water
running from the tap and you yourselves passing your finger fastly through the water flow. What will happen ? A small gap will
be created but it will not stop the water from flowing. This is exactly how the relationship between tongue and air flow must
be.
At first, play legato pronouncing “Da” and at the next bar “To”. “Da” must lean on the air flow whereas “To” cuts the air flow.
Listen very carefully to the difference. Keep the air flow the same, play the first bar legato and be aware of the air flow to
remain the same when “To” cuts it.

Exercise 9
Exercise 9a
A very nice exercise for flexibility and articulation together. Clear articulation, beautiful legato. Start with a slow tempo so
you can hear the 32th.
Don't push to go fast, hear the sound in your head and let your lips do the rest.

At this point we must have spent nearly 20 minutes ! According to my opinion, this seems to be the time we need for
warming up. Of course there is the possibility of not feeling good after the warm up. In such a case, two reasons are l
ikely to result in this feeling :
1. In every warming up process we must have in mind the “signs” that our body and sound send to us. Maybe one day
the warm up is done in a proper way and works but the next day it might not. So, if we spent one day following the
wrong warming up process, we should just take a break and do the warming up AGAIN and this time it should be
different and more proper than the previous one .
2. Ask yourself if you did a proper warm up or just played the exercises automatically, without thinking. The warming up
session is strongly related to our mind and ears.
From this point on we perform the so called “daily routine”. Do your own research in the web. I’m sure that you will find
a lot of exercises from many great trombone players. Remember that the most important thing is to be open minded. What
I’m writing below is not the utmost correct but just a number of ideas which you are able either to keep or throw away.
22
Before you start it will be good to have a small brake after your warm up. Keep in mind everything we said during the
WarmUp and if is necessary read once more the first pages. Pay attention to you air.
Exercise 1
A wellknown exercise from the warm up. Not forgetting the big breaths, be relaxed, hear the notes and always have in your
mind the best sound you want.

Exercise 3
exercise 3a
After each double line, take a short break (10-20sec), get big breath and continue with the scales. If you feel tired a good
idea is to stop and not to push to go up, after a while (a week) you can go a scale more. For good articulation in the high
register would help if you think "Te" and not "To".

exercise 3b
Scales.
In this exercise you will notice that there are two parts, one is the scales go up and the other is the scales go down. Try to
have the same sound quality as much as you go up and down. Where is legato playing with "Da" and without legato
articulate with "To". Make a small gap every two scales. Not forgetting the coordination between the hand and the
articulation, try to be in tempo. Choose a slow tempo, and you can choose different dynamics for each scale.

You will notice that the three scales are belong to the chord of B flat major (Bflat, D, F). The next time you play this exercise
start from another base (A, Aflat, G, F) and of course you will play the relevant scales.
You want to have the most beautiful legato and at the next bar clear articulation. There is no measure in this exercise but
keep the tempo steady.

Try this exercies during your daily routine to be more familiar with the minor scales.

Exercise 5
In this exercise we play harmonic minor and you will notice that the three scales are belong to the chord of B flat major (Bflat,
Dflat or Csharp, F). The next time you play this exercise start from another base (A, Aflat, G, F) and of course you will play the
relevant scales.
