ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research study was to investigate the manners of Education and

Research students in the use of their library.

Library has its origin with the development of language and written work .it is an

important element of education institution in the prospect the individuals. It gives a

great deal of support to the learner in getting its objective of learning and knowledge.

For the purpose of data collection questionnaire was used a tool of data collection.

The data analysis done with much care, percentage was used as statistical tool for

analysis of data, and much care made in analysis for attainment of objective and

reliable result .

It also found the most of the students take their library classes in the library and spent

the allotted time under the library roof.

The book searching can be made easy for the students by providing them the required

guidance in it, as it takes most of the their time attending their library.

CHAPTER-1
INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND
The word "library" is a combination of two words, "Liber and Liabre". Liber is a

French word, whereas Liaber is a Greek word.. In Greek Liaber means a trunk of

trees. Later; this word "Liber" was pronounced as "library" which means a bookshop.

The first libraries came into existence as a result of the written language and served

the same social purpose as today: the provision of information, education and

recreation. They were however not at first libraries of books as we now know them

but of clay tablets, papyri, vellum rolls and the like ' on which written language was at

first laboriously copied out by hand.

The spread of library and the invention of typewriter in the 19th century and means of

documentary reproduction in the 20th century have encouraged the proliferation of

documents of all kinds. As a result, information can now easily be communicated

from one part of the world to another and the world is increasingly becoming one

intellectual unit. The invention of the Photostat and microfilm his made it

theoretically practicable for investigation and research to be conducted on worldwide

basis anywhere and for information to be obtained from any source in the world. This

research result in the creation of more and more documents containing valuable

information. It is the social function of libraries to ensure the free flow of the

information throughout the world to anyone who needs it. (Chandler,G.1965)

The main function of library is the collection and preservation of knowledge for its

dissemination to all. Its conservation for posterity is also an important duty of a

library. Gurudeva Tagore rightly remarked, "The extent to use to which the reading

material of a library is put, should determine its importance rather than the staggering

number of volumes". He deprecated the idea of putting more emphasis on collecting

1
books alone. He gave an example of a millionaire. He is judged great in a gathering,

not by what he has but what he gives. Similarly, Gurudeva pointedly remarked that

constant and increased use of its books gave a library its significance.

Library as all of us know is a part of an institution, (if it is college, school or

university library) and the primarty purpose of an institution is to give proper

education to students. So, for that purpose, the components of an institution can

roughly be divided into two: The students and the faculty.

These are two essential parts of an institution and without a well-established library;

an institution cannot provide full facilities to the staff and students in their daily

needs. Therefore, to fulfill the requirement of the readers, books and other valuable

materials are purchased and arranged in a systematic order and kept in shelves

properly catalogued and classified. (Malik, S.M. 1989)

Research work is very essential for obtaining a higher degree. Library therefore, is the

only places where one can complete research work and can investigate enlarge and

established new thoughts.

In education sector the presence of library is very much necessary as it provide

experiences of the old races of mankind in the modern world library is set aside by

people in comparison to the use of computer and internet I took this topic for the

reason to highlight the importance of library and motivate the students to use the

treasure of knowledge.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The study in the hand is: “Exploring Student’s Interest in Library”.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY

1. To find out the use of library resources (Manuals or Electronic) the students.

2
2. To determine the either faced by the library users.

3. To suggest ways overcome problems faced by the library users.

1.4 SIGNIFICANCE
The research is important in the following areas:

1. It will highlight the importance of the use of library.

2. It will bring awareness in the students about the use of library

3. The study will let us know about the physical facilities available to the

students.

4. It will suggest solution of crucial problems, so as to ensure a more efficient

organization and more effective and fruitful operations.

5. The study will provide a ground for further investigation with a wider scope.

1.5 DELIMITATION OF THE STUDY

Due to time constraint and limited resources, the resources, the researcher selected to

study only institute of education and research, university of Peshawar students for

session 2013, 17 to explore the interest of student towards library.

CHAPTER-2
LITERATURE REVIEW
The invention of language was one the most important development in the early

history of mankind. Spoken language, which symbolizes meaning by sound permitted

man to convey message to its contemporaries and transmit them orally from one

generation to the next, language the symbolize meaning by letter of alphabet was

even more important. It permitted knowledge and experience both real and imaginary

to be communicated without the physical presence of their authors and to be passed

on to memorize them. An organic relationship exists between the evolution of the

library and the rise of the literate society. An increasing dependence upon the written

word and the extending scope of study that this afforded required the development of

some agency that would accumulate and make available records that stored the

intellectual inheritance of society.

The concept of a library, as old as origins of written records, began with the practice

of collecting the writing of others. The motives behind this practice were personal and

institutional. Personal motives gave rise to the formation of private collections

founded from a love of literature and learning, or as symbol of status. Institutional

motives gave rise to collections founded to preserve the learning of a particular social

organization the monastic library, the university library, the library of the learned

society. Each formed its own pattern of library service whose character conformed to

its social stratification and intellectual habits. Each change in the social ethos brought

new interpretations to the library ideal. (Khochar, R.S 1999)

Library development in the first half of the twentieth century continued within the

framework of social trends that had their germination in the closing decades of

Victoria ‘reign and which were quickened by the consequences of the First World

War Significant and inter –related features affecting the progress of all Kinds of

library were the efflorescence of State –directed education a belated concern for

4
technical education and scientific research, a continuing egalitarian approach to the

political basis of society, and State intervention in social affairs for collective service

to those at an economic disadvantage . A necessary condition of public library

expansion, a rising literacy level derived from a system of compulsory education

following the famous Forster Act of 1870, was brought into being by a succession of

reports and enactments together with the formation in 1899 of a Board of Education.

2.1 EDUCATION AND LIBRARY

Education is conceived as a powerful agency, which instrumental in bringing about

the desired changes in the social and cultural life of a notion. The modern concept of

education aims to develop independent thinking in the children, to provide student-

centered and research based learning environment in which the learner will explore

the things by themselves although the teacher will give them some tips and clues .in

short education in modern terms refers to overall and harmonious development of

individuals in each aspect.(Salamat,1987)

The students that use the school library often perform better in test and examination

then student who fail to use the school the school library. Encyclopendia (2010).

It observed that a study conducted Ohio revealed that 99 % of student surveyed

believed that their school librarian and school media programmes helped them

succeed in school. Cited Lonsdale (2003)

The socioeconomic students shows a positive correlation between school libraries

with qualified librarians high students performance .eHaw (2011)

The purpose of the study is to explore connecndtion between the presence of a library

and certain student academic engagement indicators, such as scholastic performance,

reading and library use patterns. Dent (2006)

Good habits lead to good academic performance but bad and defective study habits

5
result poor academic performance. Moghadam and Cheraghian (2008)

Student read for different reasons and purpose, some of which include for pleasure,

lisure, relaxation, information and for knowledge. Dadzie (2008)

He believes is process of thinking, evaluating, juding, imagining, reasoning and

Problem solving Palani, (2012)

Reading is an intellectual action which is possible only if a student forms a habit of

reading and practing these from childhood. Deavevs (2000)

The result indicates that girls and boys differ significantly in their study habits and

academic achievement. Singh (2011)

The result revealed that sex has no significant impact on the study habit and academic

achievement of students. Bhan and Gupta (2010)

The study showed different in interest by gender, which are congruent with many

society’s stereotype and females reported a stronger interest in Friendship, Animal

Stories, adventure and Histurical Fiction. Higginbotham (1999)

There is little knowledge about the everyday reading practices of tertiary education

student and how these practices affect their achievement .Gallo(2007)

Everyday reading activities in which student engtagemay, considerably influence their

study skills and subsequent academic performance. Issa, et,al (2012)

That read is the act of getting meaning from printed words which is the basic for

learning and one of most important skills in everyday life. The reading provide the

Key forms of information necessary for our day to day survival growth. Benneth and

McGough(2007)

A change is seen in their mental reasoning , physical growth, manipulative skills and

development of values and interest student who read magazine at interval learn to

relax, cool their brain and avoid mental fatigue and also makes them live a disciplined

6
life in the school . in most case ,its effect in inducing sleeping and rest after reading in

the classroom or the library add to good heath habits. Ogodo (2010)

Surveys on library instructional programs at various institutions have been gaining

attention. In his research, Haws (1987) found that over half of the students felt that

library instruction course made them more confident users of the library when it came

to finding materials for a term paper. However, one third surveyed disagreed with that

statement. Not a large percentage of students in the sampling would consider a longer

or more advanced library course.

The major aim of any university is to support teaching learning activities of its pavent

institution. The library make sure their resources are well for education development

of students (Onifadle Ogbuiyi and Omeluzor 2013)

These libraries to enhance of knowledge through reading material books purpose of

teaching and learning and research. (i ad Mudhol 2008)

The center and primary place in teaching and research to needs of educational

programme at the undergraduate, post undergraduate and research levels it .it is

necessary to adopt information and communication technologies (ICT) the process of

libraries lending and borrowing its collections .

The value of the library collection depends not only on the quantity of information

sources. The effective ways and means of providing and interpreting them

users.(2008)

The library supportive of the institution’s mission and goals .library resources and

services should be sufficient in quality and to support the institution curriculum the

most important resources academic institution .

The undergraduate of university needs information to satisfy their psychological

needs to promote .library academic pursuit during their in course of study in the

7
university. the library is provide adequate relevant information resources both in print

and non print formats. The print information resources like resources like Journals,

textbooks Magazines newspapers and references materials and non print like CD-

ROM, audio-visual material. (QuadriinAdetimir and Idown2014)

The library to transmit knowledge through teaching and to create new knowledge

through research .through its rational, systematic and comprehensive of all type of

human communications records, published and unpublished written or oral in

recorded. (Daramola (2016)
