Rail treatment
milling for removing defects and profile-deviations on
the rail head

To extend the lay-days of rails in the track and to avoid cost-intensive replacement of rails, STRA-
BAG Rail GmbH employs advanced rail milling machines. These machines are self-propelled
mobile CNC milling machines and restore the transverse- and longitudinal-target-profile of the rail
head by using geometrically defined cutting edges. In contrast to conventional rail grinding, rail
milling is capable of realizing a material removal rate in the range of millimetres without significant
heat introduction into the rail. In order to restore the target profile of the rail head, the rail milling
machines in general only need one pass. STRABAG Rail employs two different types of rail
milling machines, which are operated by experienced and highly trained crews.

overhead electrification
STRABAG Rail Fahrleitungen GmbH constructs overhead electrification for long-distance
rail and is a certified Q1 supplier and full-range service provider for the planning, installation
and maintenance of standardised overhead electrification systems for Deutsche Bahn AG.

Apart from carrying out the planning and structural calculations, we also lay foundations,
erect masts, string the contact and catenary wires, assemble the catenary systems, and
install electrical earthing, as well as overhead wire control and voltage testing systems.

With a team of qualified employees and a high level of competence in overhead installations,
STRABAG Rail Fahrleitungen has helped drive a number of new developments in this field,
such as a measuring system to map and record the position of the contact wire (ELDIS II)
and software to calculate cantilevers and droppers for mechanical prefabrication (PROLIS).
Moreover, our self-developed pile driving technique has won approval from Deutsche Bahn
AG.

Many private-sector and municipal clients value us as a competent partner in the planning
and installation of overhead lines for trams, urban rail and industrial railways.
