I. INTRODUCTION:

The Western Kalinga District Hospital shall adhere strictly to Generic prescribing, dispensing
and recording of all drugs and medicines sold and used within and out of the hospital. Legal
basis for this policy is Republic Act No. 6675, otherwise known as the Generics Act of 1988.

II. SCOPE OF THE USE OF GENERIC TERMINOLOGY:

1. All Government health agencies and their personnel as well as other government
agencies shall use generic terminology or generic names in all transactions related to
purchasing, prescribing, dispensing and administering of drugs and medicines.
2. All medical, dental and veterinary practitioners, including private practitioners shall
write prescriptions using the generic name. The brand name may be included if so
desired.
3. Any organization or company involved in the manufacture, importation, repacking,
marketing and /or distribution of drugs and medicines shall indicate prominently the
generic name of the product. In the case of brand name products, the generic name
shall appear prominently and immediately above the brand name in all product labels as
well as in advertising and other promotional materials.
4. Drug outlets including drugstores, hospital and non-hospital pharmacies and non-
traditional outlets such as supermarkets and stores, shall inform any buyer about any
and all other drug products having the same generic name, together with their
corresponding prices so that the buyer may adequately exercise his option.

III. POLICY STATEMENT:

1. Procurement of drugs and medicines shall be based on the National Drug Formulary.
Only Essential drugs shall be procured to be sold at the hospital pharmacy.
2. Prescriptions, dispensing and recording of all drugs used within and out of the hospital
must be in generics.
3. The hospital shall ensure adequate supply of drugs with generic names at the lowest
possible cost.
4. All hospital staff and personnel must be made aware of the generic s law. Every new
employee must be oriented on the generics policy of the hospital.
5. Only the standard prescription approved by the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee
shall be used at WKDH. Proper prescription should have this format:

Hospital Heading
Physician’s Printed Name/Contact Number

Patient’s Name Age


Address Sex
Date

Generic name of drug- Dosage form- quantity

Instruction

Signature of Physician
Printed name of Physician
PRC number

6. No drugs/medicines shall be dispensed without a proper prescription.


7. All prescriptions , fully or partially filled shall be filed by the pharmacist. Partially filled
prescriptions can be duplicated for future use.
