THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
Dear Parishioners,
We celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. God in his
wisdom made the message of joy to the world known to people from
far away through the appearance of the shining star. The wise men
make a clear distinction of the star as special. The light has indeed
shone for even pagans to see its glory. This is no other star than light
of a king who would redeem people from their misery. The Psalmist put is well: All nations shall
fall prostrate before you, O Lord and this is what we are here for today.
We come in worship offering our best part to the Lord. The magi offered gold, incense and
myrrh; gifts of profound meaning indicating his kingship, priesthood and immortality
respectively. What pleases the Lord most, now, is our best part – our Hearts! A pure humble heart
the Lord will not spurn – Ps. 51:17. The best gift we can offer to the Lord is a heart ready to
forgive others, filled with repentance and full of love. By so doing, we can sincerely lift up our
hearts to the Lord; which is truly right and just. Coming together to worship the Lord is best thing
people of God can do. Again, there is element of justice in worshipping God, whom we claim as
our maker, saviour and protector. What can I offer to the Lord for all he has done to me? I’ll raise
the cup of salvation and call on the Lord’s name – Ps. 116:13. Let’s not tend to be Herod, who’s
ready and eager to destroy the best part that God deserves.
I would like to borrow a few words from Pope Francis in his homily of the Epiphany (2017):
“Herod is unable to worship because he could not or would not change his own way of looking at
things. He did not want to stop worshiping himself, believing that everything revolved around
him. He was unable to worship, because his aim was to make others worship him. Nor could the
priests worship, because although they had great knowledge, and knew the prophecies, they were
not ready to make the journey or to change their ways.”
A bit of news about my ministry in Ghana! I have three main assignments. I work in a small
parish with two other stations. I still continue my teaching in the minor seminary / a high school,
students aged 15-18 years; though not a full time as when I used to reside on school campus. I am
also the secretary to my bishop, Bishop Joseph Osei-Bonsu, who has been here in the parish for a
number of times whenever he visits his sister and the family. I’m also having additional
responsibility as the Spiritual Director for the Christian Mothers’ Association (a women’s group)
in the diocese of Konongo-Mampong, Ghana. Amazing! In all these my greatest challenge is to
find a balance. Thank God, it’s been going well so far. It’s been a great experience for me over
the years I have visited the parish. This is my 6th Christmas spent with you and I’m so grateful for
your warm welcome and generosity. You’re always in my thoughts and prayers. As I go back
home to Ghana this week, please, do pray for me and my ministry. May God bless and keep us
all. Happy New Year!
