CCGPS Math 6th Grade Unit 7 Study Guide—Rational Explorations: Numbers and their Opposites.

SHOW ALL WORK ON A SEPARATE SHEET OF PAPER.

MCC6.NS.5 Understand that positive and negative numbers are used together to describe quantities having
opposite directions or values (e.g., temperature above/below zero, elevation above/below sea level, debits/credits,
positive/negative electric charge); use positive and negative numbers to represent quantities in real-world
contexts, explaining the meaning of 0 in each situation.

Write an integer to represent each description.

find and position pairs of integers and other rational numbers on a coordinate plane.

The Coordinate Plane

Quadrant II Quadrant I
Numbers are graphed on a number line. Ordered pairs of numbers
(-, +) (+, +)
are graphed on a coordinate plane. A coordinate plane has two
perpendicular number lines that divide it into 4 quadrants. The
following chart will help you identify the quadrants and the
coordinates of points on a coordinate plane.

The x-coordinate, or first number of the ordered pair, tells the

direction or number of units to move horizontally from the origin.
The y-coordinate, or second number of the ordered pair, tells the
direction AND the number of units to move vertically.
Quadrant III Quadrant IV
(-, -) (+, -)
Use the graph to the right and label a point at the coordinate (6, 1).

In an ordered pair, ORDER matters.

Read the number from the x-axis
first, then the y-axis.
