This Spreadsheet is intended to be used by qualified Civil and Structural Engineers who are
familiar with the provisions of IS:456-2000, and those who will evaluate the significance
and limitations of its contents and take responsibility for its use and application.
DISCLAIMER
No liability, including that for negligence, for any loss resulting from such usage or information
is accepted by the author of this Spreadsheet.
1. The spreadsheet is based on Annex F of IS:456-2000, for the calculations of crack widths in
structural elements, viz. slabs, beams and walls.
2. Crack width calculations are made for service load condition.
3. Crack width calculations considering stiffening effect of concrete in tension zone, are based on
British Codes BS8110: 1997 and BS8007:1987.
4. It is to be ensured that the tensile stress in concrete is less than the permissible value given in
IS:456-2000 for normal structures, and IS:3370-1965 for liquid-retaining structures.
5. Cover to bars considered is clear.
6. Calculations can be made for one section at a time.
