Ground Water Drawdown – Stabilisation – Decontamination

EP 118 23 55

Innovative Deep Drainage Solutions Applications :

for Dewatering & Stabilisation of Dewatering and stabilisation of natural slopes
Slopes and Excavations and Sites (slope deformations, natural landslides)
Decontamination. Coastal protection (coastal landlides ...)
 Dewatering and stabilisation of excavations
Deep drainage and ground water drawdown up to depths (excavation pits, railway/ highway cuttings, coal
more than 10 meters represent today still a great deal of mines ...)
effort and imply a difficult technique. However, Decreasing inflows into underground structures
sometimes it is inevitable to reach deeper aquifers that (tunnels ...)
might cause many serious problems over construction Site remediations (decontaminations ...)
and to deal with ground water lowering of tens of meters. Others
Traditional techniques are very often badly fitted to
achieve such requirements. Submersible pumps require TEMPORARY OR PERMANENT FUNCTION
a rather high minimum flow and a frequent expensive WATER
maintenance. Well points efficiency is limited to a depth
of 7 meters lower than the level of the vacuum pump. It AIR
was then interesting to find a technique to low the water WATER LEVEL
SENSOR
table deeper through the same basic principle of a line of

vertical drains. The Electropneumatic drains have been CASING
developed for this purpose to be able to drain up to 40 – D110mm INT

50 meters below ground level using pneumatic energy

(compressed air). The system copes with flows of WATER LEVEL SENSOR

General Principle of the Electropneumatic
Drains®
NON RETURN BALL VALVE
The drainage is designed by a network of manholes,
ducting for cabling and pipes for water discharge and
compressed air. The wells Ø200mm are equipped by
casing of 110 mm diameter and gravel filter. The
electropneumatic pumps are installed into wells at
defined depth, connected to a compressor and the
control panel and equipped with an intelligent sensor.
When the ground water rises in the well, it fills the pump
and the time it reaches the high level sensor, an
electrical signal is transmited to the control panel
including relays and solenoids. The signal triggers
injection of compressed air into the pumping chamber to
push water out onto the surface through an outlet tube.
The pump filling and emptying is repeated until required
drawdown is reached. The compressor can be located up
to 3 km away from the control panel, if configuration of
the site requires.
Temporary Installation
The system can be equipped easily by additional
instrumentation so it can provide:
Permanent Installation:
On-line records of ground water levels and water Protective Drainage
flows and other required data Manholes
Alarms management system via GSM or a phone
